Post –Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has become a serious public health concern amongst military soldiers who are experiencing the affects of an anxiety disorder that affects the way an individual adjust and operates with others or in their normal environment on a daily basis. In a time of emergency or harm, the body sends off a healthy reaction known as the “fight-or-flight” response which assists in the body acclimating to the situation, but in cases when the body is unable to handle the traumatic event PTSD occurs (BBRF, 2011).
Symptoms
3 Main Symptoms of PTSD (diagnosis confirmed at 30 days of continuous symptoms)
Reliving of the event …flashbacks, upsetting memories, uncontrollable behavior and nightmares
Emotional numbness…feeling of detachment, ability to block out traumatic events, lack of interest in activities and socializing with others
Difficulty concentrating…irritable, insomnia, increased awareness of surroundings.

Treatment
Desensitization is a form of treatment used to decrease PTSD symptoms experienced and help the individual to express what he or she is feeling. Overtime, the traumatic event will become less frightening for the individual to overcome.
Support groups are also beneficial as it allows individuals to discuss similar experiences in a group setting. However, if alcohol, substance abuse, depression or other medical concerns is an issue the problems will need to be addressed prior to desensitization therapy. Some antidepressants include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
PTSD can be overcome….
