P o w e r o f t h e P e n post-Tournament Report 2016 STATE FINALS The College of Wooster June 3, 2016 Dear Writing Team Coach(es), Enclosed is your school report for the State Finals at The College of Wooster. It includes the scores of the top fifteen finalists at each grade level, the Top 25 Schools, the Regional Best of Bests, and the post-tournament State Best of the Best Awards. Comprehensive school-specific reports are included for those schools placing among the top twenty-five. Schools that did not place among the top 25 may obtain their individual school reports by sending Power of the Pen a written request to do so. As you go through these results, it may be well to keep in mind that only 272 schools, or about 73% that started in Districts, were represented by any contestants at State. A little more than half of the District competitors went on to Regionals, but about 18% of those who started out survived the qualifying stages and actually made it to Wooster. We want to thank all of you who came to State this year for your patience, your performance, and your positive attitude. Power of the Pen’s dedicated Staff put in countless hours of time and preparation for this event. Those who played major roles behind the scenes are the key to the success of this large event. Their love for this program is an inspiration to us all. Since most of you will be leaving for summer vacation soon if you have not already done so, we need your help in taking care of several matters that are still pending: 1. PAYMENT OF OUTSTANDING FEES. Please check with your billing office to see that all registration, penalty, judge, and conference fees are paid or approved for payment. In your absence, we can only provide an invoice for those bills for which we have been given a PO number. Schools failing to provide payment in full or valid Purchase Order numbers before June 30 th , thereby ending the season (and our fiscal year) with a delinquency in fee payments, will not only be assessed an additional $25 “Late Payment Penalty”, but they will be unable to participate in future years until these fees are paid. The work of contestants who won awards and are from schools who have not paid their outstanding fees will not appear in the 2016 Book of Winners. Any honor they may have won in District, Regional or State events will also be regarded as null and void. These same penalties will be applied stringently against those schools which we have reason to believe deliberately ignored the requirement for ALL persons on campus to purchase Activity Passes. If your school failed to meet this obligation, inadvertently or otherwise, please take the necessary steps to correct the situation immediately. 2. LOST AND FOUND. If any items of value were lost at Wooster, please report them to Beth Dixon at 937-390-2452 to see if they are among those articles recovered on campus. 3. PUBLICATION PROCEDURES. Their love for this program is an inspiration to us all. Since most of you will be leaving for summer vacation soon if you have not already done so, we need your help in taking care of several matters that are still pending:

1. PAYMENT OF OUTSTANDING FEES. Please check with your billing office to see that all registration, penalty, judge, and conference fees are paid or approved for payment. In your absence, we can only provide an invoice for those bills for which we have been given a PO number. Schools failing to provide payment in full or valid Purchase Order numbers before June 30th, thereby ending the season (and our fiscal year) with a delinquency in fee payments, will not only be assessed an additional $25 “Late Payment Penalty”, but they will be unable to participate in future years until these fees are paid.

If any items of value were lost at Wooster, please report them to

Beth Dixon at 937-390-2452 to see if they are among those articles recovered on campus.

3. PUBLICATION PROCEDURES. Please send typewritten, single-spaced copies of any Best of the Best papers written by your students this season. These are definitely slated for

publication in the 2016 Book of Winners, but publication will not be guaranteed to those schools that fail to send an edited copy. We will also publish one paper for each of the top three winners at each grade level. (If a top winner wins a Best of Best, this is the paper we will publish.) We also need a profile and photo of the First Place Winners at each grade level. This should be taken care of as soon as possible to insure publication in the forthcoming Book of Winners. A list of Best of the Best winners at State is enclosed in this information packet. If one of your students appears on the list, you, as the Writing Team Coach, are responsible for sending a typed, edited copy to the State Office (Power of the Pen, Box 442, Richfield, Ohio 44286). A copy of the publication procedures that appears in your Coach’s Manual is enclosed. No material or photos will be returned.

5. Best of the Best winners at State will receive their medallions or cash awards in the mail ONLY AFTER THEIR EDITED WORK IS TURNED IN TO THE STATE OFFICE. If a student won more than one Best of the Best at State, multiple cash awards (but only one medallion) will be awarded.

6. MISSING AWARDS. If you are missing any journals, trophies or medallions for the past

season, please call, FAX, e-mail, or write to the State Office. We will do our best to see that these awards reach your school before the onset of the new school year. If engraving or spelling errors appear on any awards, please report these as well so that replacements can be sent.

7. ORDERS FOR MATERIALS. The State Office will be open this summer to accept orders

for these State items: State souvenir programs ($10), Book of Winners for 2015 ($25)- these prices include handling and shipping. Call 330-659-3226, FAX 330-659-6291, or e-mail [email protected]. This year there are no T-shirts left for orders by mail. Make checks payable to: Power of the Pen.

8. STATE PACKETS. If you left campus early and did not pick up the packet containing

State certificates for your contestants, all work written at State, and the Judges’ ballots for that work, please write, phone, or FAX Power of the Pen to make arrangements. There is a $10.00 fee to cover the costs of shipping and handling. Make checks for other items payable to: Power of the Pen., and send to Power of the Pen, PO Box 442, Richfield, Ohio, 44286. These materials can only be held one year. After that, they will have to be disposed of. This policy also applies to any Take Home packets not picked up at District and Regional events.

Many thanks for your contributions this year to the art of written expression. Without your dedication, your writers would not have had the opportunity to benefit from this interscholastic writing experience. With best wishes for a wonderful summer– Lorraine Merrill Founder & Executive Director Power of the Pen Box 442, Richfield, Ohio 44286 Telephone 330-659-3226 FAX 330-659-6291 e-mail: [email protected]

*Winners that did not pick up awards on stage at the State Finals may be published if the edited, typed copies are sent in as required. However, winners will not receive awards if they were not present to receive them. It is always an embarrassment to have names announced on stage at State and have no one come forth to receive them. It sends a message out to sponsors, as well as participants, that the prestige of these awards is not valued by the recipient.
