Depression is a common phenomenon that happens to anyone at any point

of time. There is childhood depression, depression due to past tragedy or

trauma, depression in elderly and even amongst working professionals.

Depression sees on age, gender or situation. The condition is agnostic to

all these components. What was once conceived as a disorder specific to

women, is today all pervasive in all demographics. There are many kinds of

depression and one of the most common types seen in women is

postpartum depression after childbirth. A woman’s body and mind

undergoes several changes after childbirth. It is a new phenomenon and

hence creates a lot of discomfort physically and mentally.

Postpartum Depression

Statistics show that at least one in seven women go through postpartum

depression but it often goes undetected and poses subsequent problems to

the concerned woman and her family. It is also quite an alarming fact that

only 20 to 30 percent that go through postpartum depression actually

receive depression treatment.

The consequences of untreated postpartum depression can be debilitating

for the mother and also have adverse effects on her child. And the effects

of depression get worse when the child has development or medical

problems upon birth, pre-mature baby and low birth weight. Effects on the

mother can range anywhere from anxiety to guilt and also get near fatal

effects like development of suicidal thoughts.

Effects of Postpartum Depression

Children of mothers with postpartum depression have been shown to

develop development delays, lower IQs, attention deficits and inability to

hold and control their emotions.

While some parts of

anxiety and frustration are

understandable post

delivery, extreme levels

need to be treated as early

as possible to avoid

potential problems. There

are a number of treatment

approaches to treating

postpartum depression.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy

(IPT) are two of the well known forms of treatment. But failure to detect the

problem and fear of social stigma prevent mothers to access the right kind

of treatment.

But seeking help from depression treatment centers at the right time can do

a world of good to the mother and the child making parenting a beautiful

journey. There are a number of successful treatment centers out there that

can offer concrete and practical help when you battle with the most difficult

symptoms of depression or other mental disorders.
