What is “Necropsy”?

• Necropsy, means post-mortem examination. Necropsy is an important tool to a veterinarian. Post mortem exams can lead to an effective diagnosis.

Conducting a Post Mortem Exam.

• Conduct all exams as soon after death as possible. Decomposition will vary with different parts of the body and is affected greatly by air temperature.

• When preparing for a post-mortem examinations you must consider, sanitation, convenience and disposal of the carcass. Small animals may be “posted” at the clinic, whereas large animals are usually posted in the field where the corpse was located.

Preparation for the Post Mortem Exam

• The veterinarian and others assisting with the post mortem exam should wear suitable clothing, preferably disposable.

• One piece coveralls

• Rubber boots or shoe covering

• Gloves

• Clothing that will be used again must be disinfected.

Tools required for the post-mortem exam.

• A post mortem exam will require different tools than a surgical procedure, especially for large animals. Suggested tools are;

• A pry bar for forcing bones apart.

• A bone saw

• Set of knives, blades should vary in size and length depending on usage.

• Bone chisels

• Disinfectant
