2017 Save the date
Over the last 13 years, Topco Media
has pulled together meticulous
research and rigorous benchmarking
methodology every year, to bring
South Africa the National Business
Awards and accompanying Top
Performing publication. Together,
the publication and awards have
come to be synonymous with
business best practice, innovation
and success. Last year’s well-
attended event, held at Emperors
Palace on 17 November, awarded
first place to 10 organisations and
three business leaders, who had all
proven themselves to be undisputed
champions in their sectors. The
highlight of the evening saw former
President of South Africa, President
Thabo Mbeki, being awarded the
Lifetime Achievement Award.
Preceding this year’s awards, and
for the first time, previously close-
kept business secrets and innovative
best practices were opened up
to delegates of the new National
Business Conference, where they
received valuable business insights from, and interaction with, leaders of
some of South Africa’s biggest and
most powerful companies. Opened
by distinguished keynote speaker,
Dr Mathews Phosa, the conference
featured a networking session
in which delegates could meet
and discuss business partnership
opportunities.
As a combined calendar event, the
2016 National Business Awards &
Conference was both an inspiring
showcase for the leading lights of
business, and a catalyst for the
spread of business success industry-
wide, through the sharing of business
intelligence.
Market impact
The National Business Awards &
Conference received support from
four top-tier business media partners
with over 100 public and private
sector executives registered and
attended the conference. Keynote
and guest speakers included
politicians, CEOs, directors and
founders of some of the biggest
companies operating in South Africa.
10 in-house widely-circulated press
releases preceded and followed the
event and social media feeds saw
#SaBizAwards trending as a frequent
topic for more than 2 hours during
the Awards.

Jeff Radebe is the longest-serving Minister in Cabinet, having served under all
South Africa’s post-democracy presidents: Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema
Motlanthe and now Jacob Zuma. A former chairman of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal,
he has been responsible for Transport, Public Enterprises, Public Works and Justice
and Constitutional Development. But his latest role, as Minister in the Presidency
responsible for monitoring, evaluation and planning, puts him at the centre of
government’s deliverables.
Key to the deliverables identified by government is the National Development Plan,
which now falls within Radebe’s portfolio. For Radebe, it is important that people
understand that the NDP is not owned by government, but that it should be owned
by all South Africans. “The NDP is not only a plan of the government but a plan for the people of South Africa. The President, in his
wisdom, made sure that the National Planning Commission is not a government entity but was constituted essentially by people
outside of government,” said Radebe at his office at Tuynhuis, next to Parliament.

WHAT BLEW OUR WINNERS, GUESTS AND SPONSORS AWAY
“Business has a critical role to play in the ever-changing milieu of our social and economic
landscape. Our country faces tremendous challenges. It is my belief that, in word and in deed,
business groupings like yours must occupy a central role in a national dialogue to recapture the
imagination of South Africans and a quest to re-imagine our country.” - President Thabo Mbeki,
Former President of South Africa
“This is a great honour which I humbly accept on behalf of all entrepreneurs and business
leaders in the country who are championing transformation, innovation and job creation.
These awards reaffirm what we are doing and give us the credibil ity and a platform to inspire
others to follow in our footsteps. We have to do more and I’d l ike to implore every South
African to herald a new era in our country that advocates positive creative thinking to solve the
many challenges South Africa is facing ,” says The Creative Counsel group co-CEO and Top
Performing Business Leader Ran Neu-Ner.
“Just cannot get over the splendour of seeing our company logo flash up on those four huge
screens when Unitrans won the Transport and Logistics award. Very impressive” - Jo-Anne De
Jager, Solutions Manager, Unitrans Supply Chain Solutions
I think everything went off absolutely well and accordingly to plan as well as a great time was
given to all. Thank you for all your efforts that you put in growing the country and I look
forward to seeing you next year! - Margaret Hirsch, COO, Hirschs
