The inaugural Women Automotive Summit was proud to welcome over 175 attendees in Stuttgart, June 13th.
The purpose of the event was to celebrate global female leaders’ success stories, whilst also exploring how new technologies are aecting everyone’s role in the automotive industry currently.
“Collaboration Not Competition”Based on a foundation of honest discussion and experience sharing, Sophie Seiwald, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz.io opened the event challenging the audience to not just look at gender or racial diversity, but the importance of “diversity of mindset” and “the art of thinking independently together”. Gold Sponsor NIO’s, UK Managing Director, Dr Angelika Sodian followed, outlining NIO’s “Blue Sky” vision and the need to seize every opportunity: life is full of surprises, who knows what a traditional career ladder is anymore. The first session closed with Sophie and Angelika being joined on-stage for an interview-style debate with General Motor’s Executive Director of Design, Helen Emsley; led by Roger Atkins (LinkedIn Top Voice 2018). The message from this panel was clear “collaboration not competition” is the key!
“Everything is possible, if you believe”After a quick coee refuel and some networking, the audience had the privilege to hear from Linda Jackson, CEO of Citroen who inspired all with her message: “Everything is possible, if you believe.” Moving slightly away from the diversity and sharing success story theme, the event continued with Silver Sponsor SAP’s USA and EU representatives (Ellen Sasson and Stanislava Winkler) taking the
stage sharing their experiences from Across the Atlantic; followed by an insight into Car as a Software by Gold Sponsor WirelessCar’s, Anna Honnér.
“Organised Chaos” Next was time for the session which we like to call: “organised chaos”, where attendees got to choose various Roundtable Workshop discussions to join, giving the chance for real business opportunities and connections to be made. The final session was dedicated to dierent interpretations of “What Success Means To You?” Event chairwoman, Mary-Jo led the panel, with contributions from Jardine Motor’s Group HR Director, Clare Martin; Plug & Play’s Venture’s Associate, Livia Toth and QEV Technologies’ CBO, Monika Mikac. Based on the fantastic audience participation and the circling of the microphone around the room, it was clear the discussion could have lasted well into the night, but albeit it was time for wine…
We would like to end this event summary by thanking every single speaker, sponsor and attendee for making the first Women Automotive Summit such an inspirational day. It is clear “diversity” is on many companies’ mind, but only by working together and having such events with cross-industry participation will we succeed in having a “better future”.
Our final message: there is no glass ceiling!

“How new work becomes part of the automotive industry” Dr. Anna-Charlotte Fleischmann-Kopatsch, Senior Consultant, MHP–a Porsche Company During our workshop, we discussed MHPs five new work areas "values", "people & culture", "organization & processes", "tools & technology" and "spaces & environment". We figured out that only if all these areas are in a healthy balance, a company will be able to give their employees the best circumstances combining individual aspects from existing and new ways of working. Furthermore, we discussed the dierent needs of today's employees like those, that might want to work in a creative surrounding in the morning, but in a complete opposite way during the afternoon. Or those, that work with their head, but also those, that work with their heart and those, that have to be a business person during the day, but also like to dance during the evening; those, that need a hierarchical structure and those that enjoy the agile surrounding and many more. Thankfully there are mostly technology-driven companies which are already oering a lot to fulfill all the dierent needs of their employees. Trust, personal responsibility and respect are crucial for this transformation. In summary, we have come to the following conclusion, that OEMs and Tier1s still have a long way to go to achieve what we call "new work", but in a number of ways they also start activities that are heading in the right direction.

Entering the automotive industry: challenges and how to overcome themMonika Mikac, CBO, QEV Technologies
How changes in the automotive industry are aecting its attraction to new graduatesAngelika Sodian, UK Managing Director, NIO, UK The automotive industry is undergoing a huge transformation that is bringing significant change for existing sta and jobseekers. In our roundtable, the consensus was that young people, and new graduates especially, will have a much greater range of employment options to choose from. This increased variety will not only be in regards to the types of jobs available, but also to the profile of companies they can work for, in terms of where they are situated on the transformation cycle. A so-called value fit (a match between employee’s values and company’s values) will be of increasingly higher importance in the future
How OEMs can innovate by collaborating with start-ups Livia Toth, Ventures Associate, Plug and Play Tech Center We held the workshop on startup corporate best practices to address and correct the problems identified in these relationships. We discussed a set of best practices that should be applied when corporations and startups partner with each other
Car as a SoftwareAnna Honnér, Director Sales & Marketin, WirelessCar, Sweden Our roundtable discussion, was all about opening up for sharing experiences and thoughts regarding change ongoing within automotive. Discussing change of business models driven by electrification and software development as well as change of “way of thinking” and “way of working” compared to the more traditional and current. I particularly appreciated the openness and curiosity showed by the participants and the diverse perspectives everyone brought into the dialogue from dierent companies and roles and I am convinced that there was something for everyone to bring back into their own context.

International Perspectives and Best Practices for Advancing Women in STEM in Automotive Gail Mattson, President, INWES, USA
Started o the session with high level information about the low numbers and challenges of getting more women into STEM careers and leadership. Provided research information that shows the advantages of having diverse teams for problem solving and coming up with innovative ideas, and women in leadership positions, specifically for tech companies. Went around the table to provide each participant with a few minutes to discuss the situation for women in their company and to share any best practices. Issues with regards to retaining and promoting women seemed to be a common challenge. Then shared with the group various programs that their leadership should be developing and implementing through diversity and inclusion programs to address these issues such as diversity and Inclusion training, addressing implicit biases in recruiting and promoting, mentoring programs, parental leave, flexible work schedules and child care.
The topic of Automotive Security is definitely on people’s minds. However, there is not enough discussion from OEMs,vendors, etc., nor is there enough movement towards automotive cybersecurity. With GDPR focused on data, it is only a matter of time before there are automotive securitystandards and policies shaping the industry. Autonomous vehicles will lead the eorts towards a more secure car for both the consumer and the OEM. Key Takeaways:1. Ultimate responsibility still remains unclear when a computer or technology fails. Is the OEM, software provider, vehicle owner, etc.? 2. Cybersecurity is discussed but adoption is slow.3. IoT adds to the complexity.
