The incumbent is particularly responsible for the management and teaching of Band instruments within the College at the highest level and the co-ordination of the Year 5 Music Education through Bands and Strings program (MEBS) in conjunction with Year 5 curriculum music teachers and the Head of Strings. Efficient administration of the Band Program including o Accurate records of student involvement and attendance o Band Asset Register and Instrumental Database o Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Instrument Maintenance and Replacement Schedules o Management of the Band Budget o Rehearsal and Teaching Timetables o Organisation and paperwork associated with Band events in the School Calendar including Concerts, Tours, Camps etc. o Band Music Library o Production and updating of Band related publications including St Peters Website, Ensemble Handbooks and other Music Department Information Booklets o Effective and appropriate communication with other members of faculty, students, parents and college administration o Promote the Band (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion and Contemporary) programs.

Direction of Ensembles within the Band Program o Prepare ensembles for and conduct performances as planned in

the music calendar o Work closely with other conductors within the Band Program as

they develop their ensembles. o Communicate performance details o Lead well prepared engaging and effective rehearsals o Through repertoire choice encourage students to appreciate,

understand and perform a wide range of musical styles and genres o Work closely with students in the ensembles encouraging them and

guiding them in their musical development o Accurate records of student involvement and attendance o Audition students for positions within the Band Program in

conjunction with the Co-ordinators of Woodwind and Percussion o Be part of the audition panel for General Excellence scholarships o Mentor and monitor the progress of scholarship students in the

Band program.

Teach band students, appropriate to instrument speciality o Give lessons of a very high standard which provide planned,

sequential development of the students’ musical skills o Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies,

activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of each student

o Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of the student

o Communicate appropriately and effectively with parents/caregivers re student progress

o Maintain accurate records of student attendance o Allocate lesson times which implement the College’s policy on

lesson rotations o Create accurate tuition billing schedules.

Oversee, manage and work closely with the full time and peripatetic teaching staff and conductors in the Band Program including - o Oversee and collaborate with Co-ordinators of Woodwind and Co-

ordinator of Percussion o Engagement/replacement of peripatetic staff and conductors, as

needed, in consultation with the Director of Music o Allocation of students o Monitoring of student progress o Oversee the reporting process within the Band program ensuring

accurate and relevant feedback is given to parents.

Support curriculum performance program in conjunction with music classroom teachers.

Co-ordination of the Year 5 Band Immersion program (MEBS) in conjunction with Year 5 curriculum music teachers and the Head of Strings.

Attend relevant professional development activities to further develop skills and knowledge.

Liaise with parents, students and staff from the College community.

Other duties as requested by the Director of Music.

Workplace Health & Safety:

Workplace Health & Safety duties:

The Head of Bands is accountable for the day to day control of their respective area of operations with regard to Workplace Health and Safety.

In addition to the mandatory duties and obligations imposed by the statutory requirements, the Head of Bands must be familiar with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and the policies and procedures associated therewith.

The Head of Bands must ensure that no employee is required to undertake a task without adequate safety instructions and job specific training, reporting all hazards and incidents to the HR Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experienced band instruments teacher with demonstrated very high level teaching skills;

Demonstrated professional performance experience;

Demonstrated high level conducting skills;

Extensive and broad ensemble experience;

Demonstrated experience and excellence in a similar role

Knowledge and Experience in classroom teaching is desirable.

Demonstrated enthusiasm, initiative and a keen interest in promoting the Music Department, and particularly the Band Program, to students, parents and the wider community.

High level of written and verbal communication skills;

Experience or qualification in management;

Ability to work collaboratively and develop a positive rapport with other members of the music staff

Ability to facilitate, develop and maintain positive relationships with faculty, students, parents and college administration

Very high level of administration and organisational skills

Ability to demonstrate professionalism and discretion in relation to confidential school matters at all times

Ability to obtain a truck/bus license.

These selection criteria will form the basis to assess applicants for short-listing and determine the successful Head of Bands: SC1 - Qualifications

Graduate qualifications and a minimum of five years teaching experience in subjects taught within the Music Department.

Proven ability to conduct senior ensembles and produce large scale performances to a high level.

Over 3 years of Band directing experiences in a school setting with a proven record of success.

Able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of music curriculum and ensemble pedagogy in a P-12 co-educational school environment.

Current Queensland Teacher registration or eligibility to apply for Queensland registration.

Professional experience and profile as a performer or conductor is desirable.

Hours of Duty:

Full-Time, Permanent

(for terms and conditions please refer to the Queensland Lutheran Schools Single Enterprise agreement)

This position requires attendance at the College for each week of term, but not at the teacher preparation days at the end of Term 2 and Term 4. This is in lieu of evening and weekend work that this position requires.

Classification:

Band & Step Level under Teaching Award of Single Enterprise Agreement Plus Curriculum 1 Allowance as per Schedule 6
