HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter enters his fifth season with the Timbers in 2017. Since joining the club for the 2013 season, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active coaches with a record of 60-46-50, while leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit victory totals in each of his first four seasons. During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference twice and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013. Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranked fourth among then-active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the Bruce Arena (62-37-1, .625), Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league. Porter, who led the Timbers to a club-record 12 home victories in 2016, is a two-time recipient of the Oregon Sports Awards’ Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year (2013, 2015), becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the honor since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park. In his first season with the club, Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after assembling one of the biggest turnaround seasons in league history, guiding the Timbers to a 23-point improve-ment and a plus-43 goal-differential increase over the previous season. The 2013 club finished atop the Western Conference to secure its first MLS playoff berth and posted a league-best 15 shutouts, includ-ing a league-record 11 clean sheets at home. Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (8) and Jake (6), and a daughter, Stella (5).

PORTLAND TIMBERS VS REAL SALT LAKEWEDNESDAY, JULY 19, 2017

NOTABLE QUOTESPortland Timbers head coach Caleb PorterOn his reaction to the game…“Great performance. From start to finish. Every single guy. Domination against the team at the top of the table. Complete domination.”

On the feeling walking away with just one point…“Never satisfied obviously unless you get three, but if you’ve been around this sport long enough you know sometimes you don’t get three points. But for me today is the bar now. It’s our best performance of the year on both sides of the ball. It’s crazy this sport that we can have 24 shots to six and not get out of here with three points, but I was very pleased with the performance and I have nothing more to say. Other than if we do that again, and if that’s the best team in the league, I like our chances this year.”

Portland Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco (translated) On the team’s change in mentality since the Seattle match…“In the final moments of the match, we thought we could get the result. We had a great performance. We had 24 shots and couldn’t win. The change in mentality was very important for us. We played two games against Sporting Kansas City and Chicago in a really good way.”

On scoring his first goal at Providence Park…“It’s very important for me to get my first goal here. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win the game. It’s good for my confidence, but in the end we need to win.”

On the team’s mentality to score the equalizer…“When we’re not at home, it’s a little bit harder because the opposition is staying back and defending. When we’re at home and down, we have more energy to fight. We need to become a team that’s aggressive for the entire 90 minutes, and not just in the final part of the match.”

MATCH RECAPThe Portland Timbers battled the Chicago Fire to a 2-2 draw before a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on Wednesday night. Forward Fanendo Adi scored his 10th goal of the season in the draw against Chicago, while midfielder Sebastián Blanco recorded his first career goal at Providence Park, and his third overall in 2017.

With a season-high 24 overall shots and nine shots on target, also the most for the team in a single match this season, the Timbers took the lead in the 24th minute when Adi converted from the penalty spot after referee Robert Sibiga whistled for a handball inside the 18-yard box, with the striker placing the ball down the middle to record his 10th goal of the season. With the finish, Adi has scored 51 goals in league play since joining the Timbers midway through the 2014 season. One of two players in MLS to score at least 10 goals in each of the last three seasons, Adi has scored the third-most goals in MLS since making his league debut.

Following Portland’s opening goal, Chicago (11-3-5, 38pts) managed to score two unanswered goals when midfielder Arturo Alvarez’s penetrating cross went untouched in the box, sneaking into the far corner in the 34th minute, while defender Brandon Vincent was able to find space at the back post before hitting an effort off the cross-bar and into the back of the net in the 60th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 edge. Ten minutes after Chicago’s second goal, the Timbers responded with an equalizer in the 70th minute when Valeri slipped a well-weighted pass through the 18-yard box to Blanco, who took a touch before firing a driven shot into the far corner from the right side of the box.

Pushing for a positive result, the Timbers created several scoring opportunities throughout the match. In the 15th minute, a clipped ball into the box found Adi, who chested the ball down for midfielder Ben Zemanski, whose first-time volley was saved by Chicago goalkeeper Matt Lampson.

In the 18th minute, Valeri switched the ball across the 18-yard box to Blanco, who played a cross into a dangerous area in the six-yard box to Adi for a header that went just wide of the far post. One minute after Chicago’s first goal, Portland responded strongly when Valeri chested down defender Lawrence Olum’s headed pass in the box, before producing an acrobatic overhead effort that narrowly missed the target.

In the 51st minute, Adi broke free on a counter attack, shrugging off his defender, before hitting a shot that was deflected wide by Lampson in the 56th minute.Continu-ing to press forward, Portland created another strong chance on goal in the 63rd minute when Blanco slipped a pass to Valeri inside the box, with the midfielder hitting a low effort that forced a strong deflection from the Fire defense, while Olum’s long-distance effort in the 67th minute forced a strong save from Lampson.
