2019-20 Viking Basketball • 1 THE OPENING TIP After a familiar-looking opening game, the Portland State basketball team will venture into the unknown this Saturday when the Vikings take on the Indiana Hoosiers. PSU opened the season on Tuesday with a 94-69 win over the University of Puget Sound that fea- tured all the recognizable Viking trappings - literally. PSU’s “Peery Pressure” defense was on display, forcing 31 UPS turnovers which led to 32 points. PSU made 18 steals and blocked nine shots along the way. Now Portland State will see a significant rise in the level of competition as it faces Indiana of the Big Ten Conference. The two teams have never met, and west-coast bound PSU has only played three Big Ten teams in its history - the most recent of which was in 2004. Like the Vikings, Indiana opened the season with a decisive win, 98-65, over Western Illinois at home. The Hoosiers come off a 19-15 season in 2018-19. The non-conference game with Indiana is the first on the road this season, and one of eight games away from home before league play begins. Portland State will need contributions up and down the lineup against Indiana, just like it had against Puget Sound. Five Vikings scored in double figures, and all 10 that played had at least five points. SR G Matt Hauser led the way with 13 points. Hauser, the Santa Clara transfer, also led the Vikings 23 points in an exhibition game against Evergreen State last week. SR F Rashaad Goolsby had a team-high 10 rebounds against Puget Sound, and JR G Holland “Boo Boo” Woods scored 12 with five assists and five steals. The Vikings are now 54-10 at home in non-conference games over the last 12 seasons. Saturday’s game at Indiana tips off at 11 a.m. PT. It is televised on the Big Ten Network Plus. HEAD COACH BARRET PEERY

Barret Peery was named Portland State’s Men’s Basketball Coach on April 10, 2017. He quickly put his stamp on the Viking program, leading the team to 20 wins, national recog-nition and a post-season bid in the CIT in his first year. Peery came to Port-land State after two de-cades of collegiate coaching to lead the Viking program into a future that includes the opening of a brand new playing facility in 2018. One of those previous seasons was as a Viking basketball assistant coach (2002-03). In addition to Portland State, Peery has been an assistant coach at high-profile programs like Utah and Arizona State, at a Big Sky school; his alma mater Southern Utah, and comes from Santa Clara where he was the Associate Head Coach. He has worked with Head Coaches Bill Evans (Southern Utah), Jim Boylen (Utah) and Herb Sendek (Arizona State, Santa Clara) at the Division I level, as well as Heath Schroyer at Port-land State. Peery had two head coaching stints to great ac-claim at the junior college level. He compiled a career record of 178-30 in six seasons at College of Southern Idaho (2002-05, 85-19) and Indian Hills (IA) Communi-ty College (2011-14, 93-11). In 2014, Indiana Hills was the NJCAA runner-up, going 34-3 and winning regional and district tiles. Peery’s teams routinely were among the top scor-ing in the nation. His 2012-13 squad averaged 97.9 points per game. In three seasons at Indian Hills, his teams went 60-1 at home and reached the number one ranking in the nation. At CSI, Peery led his team to two national tour-naments in three seasons and twice led the nation in scoring. The Golden Eagles placed fourth in the nation in 2006-07. Peery was the Scenic West Athletic Con-ference Coach of the Year in 2007-08 after leading his team to a third straight SWAC title. CSI was ranked number one in the nation for the last four weeks of the regular season.

COMING UP Portland State makes another long trip next week when the Vikings travel to Hawai’i for a Nov. 15 game. It will be the first meeting with the Rainbow Warriors since 1979. The Vikings return home to host a big crosstown rivalry game against the University of Portland on Nov. 20 (7:05 p.m.). They will be seeking a win over the Pilots for the fourth year in a row.

GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. INDIANA• ALL-TIME SERIES: Portland State and Indiana have never met on the basketball court.• PORTLAND STATE vs. THE BIG TEN: Portland State is 0-3 all-time against members of the Big

Ten, with losses to Michigan State (1979), Nebraska (1979) and Ohio State (2004).• COACHES: Vikings Coach Barret Peery (Southern Utah, 1996) is in his third season on the Park Blocks

and has a 37-30 career record. Peery has never faced Indiana... Peery’s only other head coaching expe-rience is at the junior college level where he was 178-30 in six seasons (2005-08, College of Southern Idaho; 2011-14, Indian Hills (IA) CC)... the Hoosiers are coached by Archie Miller (North Carolina State, 2002) who is in his third season. Miller has a 36-31 record with the Hoosiers, 175-94 in nine seasons overall. He spent six seasons as Head Coach at Dayton.

INDIANA HOOSIERS• The University of Indiana is a member of the Big Ten Conference, located in Bloomington, IN.• Last year, Indiana was 19-15 overall, 8-12 and tied for eighth in the Big Ten. • Indiana returns three starters and seven letterwinners from last year’s team. The Hoosiers have lost top

scorers Romeo Langford (16.5 ppg) and Juwan Morgan (15.5 ppg), but starters Aljami Durham (8.3 ppg), Justin Smith (8.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Rob Phinisee (6.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg) return. Devonte Green (9.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.0 apg) is also back.

• Against Western Illinois on Tuesday, Indiana won 98-65. Forward Justin Smith had 24 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots to lead the Hoosiers. Guard Aljami Durham went for 21 points on perfect shooting (7-7/3-3/4-4). Guard Armaan Franklin had a team-high eight assists... the Hoosiers shot .585 from the field, .455 from three-point range and .680 at the line. They out-rebounded Western Illinois, 47-28.

SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE VIKING QUICK NOTESWINNING LINES • Portland State is 1-0 on the season, 1-0 at home.• The Vikings have won nine in a row at home dating to last season.• In 2018-19, PSU was 16-16, 12-4 at home, 3-10 on the road, 1-2 at neutral sites... PSU’s 11-9 conference

record was its best since going 11-9 in 2013-14. The Vikings were 8-2 at home, 3-7 on the road... PSU was 1-1 in overtime.

Home Court(s)• Portland State opened the Viking Pavilion at the Peter W. Stott Center in 2018-19. The Stoller Family

Court is PSU’s fifth (and hopefully final) home court since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. Previously, the main home court was the old Peter W. Stott Center. However, the Vikings also used the Rose Garden (now Moda Center) and Memorial Coliseum occasionally over the years. In 2017-18, PSU used Lewis & Clark College’s Pamplin Sports Center as a home court while the Viking Pavilion was being completed. Here is the breakdown:

- Viking Pavilion - 17 games, 13-4 - Peter W. Stott Center - 233 games, 168-65 - Rose Garden (Moda Center) - 28 games, 19-9 - Memorial Coliseum - 19 games, 13-6 - Lewis and Clark - 12 games, 7-5 - 24th season - 309 games, 220-89 at home overall • Portland State has lost only 10 non-conference home games in the last 13 seasons (54-10). PSU is 28-10

BARRET PEERY’S RECORD vs. THE FIELD

AN OPENING GAME TO BUILD ON Portland State came up with a solid victory in its home opener, 94-69, over NCAA III University of Puget Sound. The Vikings raced to a fast start, then cruised in the second half to the win. Said Viking Coach Barret Peery: “We played a very good first half. The second half was way too sloppy and casual. Sometimes it is tough to keep that intensity up with a big lead though.” Some notes from the opener:• Five Vikings scored in double figures, with SR G Matt Hauser leading the way with 13 points... all 10 that

played scored at least five points.• Portland State has now won nine straight home games at Viking Pavilion.• SR F Rashaad Goolsby grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in just 16 minutes of action.• SR C Sal Nuhu tied his career high with six blocked shots.• JR G Holland “Boo Boo” Woods made five steals. He became the eighth Viking in history to reach 100

career steals. He now has 104 in 66 games.• PSU forced 31 Loggers’ turnovers, making 18 steals and blocking nine shots.• Playing in their first career games for the Vikings were SR G Matt Hauser, SR F Markus Golder, RS FR G

Kyle Greeley, RS FR F Trey Wood, SO G Ian Burke, SR F Alonzo Walker and SO G Chris Whitaker.• SR G Lamar Hamrick did not play due to an injured left wrist.

BOO BOO ON THE VERGE Portland State point guard Holland “Boo Boo” Woods is on the verge of becoming the number one helper in Viking basketball history. Woods has 361 career assists in 66 games (5.5 pg). That total has him ranked fourth all-time at PSU. Woods, a junior, is only 65 assists away from the record held by Terry Adolph in 1976-78. Adolph was a prolific assist man in his two-season career at PSU, no doubt benefiting from having the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history playing alongside him in Freeman Williams. Adolph averaged 7.8 assists per game in each of his two seasons, totaling 421 in 54 games. Behind Adolph is teammate Chucky Smith (1974-78, 392 assists) and “modern-era” star Derek Nesland (1996-2000, 371 assists). As for Woods, at his current pace he would break the Portland State assist mark some time in late December of this season. Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points in late December. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone (currently 834). And finally, Woods now has 104 career steals, ranking eighth all-time at PSU. The school record is 128 by Calaen Robinson (2015-17). Woods would be on pace to set that record later this season.

BOO BOO, PART TWO A few highlights from Holland Woods career:• Boo Boo has led the team in assists in 53 of 66 career games.• Named 2nd team All-Big Sky Conference in 2018-19. Was Big Sky Freshman of the Year in 2017-18.• Led the Vikings in scoring (15.0), assists (5.3) and steals (1.6) last season.

YAHOO FOR NUHU SR C Sal Nuhu opened the season just as Vikings fans would have expected by swatting away shots. Nuhu had six blocks against Puget Sound to go with 12 points and seven rebounds. Nuhu led the Big Sky Conference last season with 64 blocked shots (2.0 pg). That total ranked fourth in Portland State history for a season. Nuhu now has 70 career blocks, ranking fifth all-time at PSU.

2019-20 VIKINGS SEASON PREVIEW The 2019-20 Portland State Basketball season should be a mixture of the familiar and the new. The familiar will include the dazzling playmaking of All-Big Sky Conference guard Holland “Boo Boo” Woods, the shot blocking of league leader Sal Nuhu, and the trademark full-court “Peery Pressure” put on by the Vikings. “The brand of basketball that you will see us play won’t look much different from the last two years,” said Viking Coach Barret Peery. “With Boo Boo, Sal and Rashaad (Goolsby) we have three guys who played big minutes for us last year, know how we play and what we do. We also have a couple of guys who redshirted with Trey (Wood) and Kyle (Greeley) that know our system and how we do things on a daily basis.” The new will include a host of transfers who have bolstered the Portland State roster in the off-sea-son. They include Division I graduate transfers Markus Golder (Valparaiso), Matt Hauser (Santa Clara) and Alonzo Walker (Idaho State), senior transfer Lamar Hamrick (Detroit Mercy) and junior college transfers Kimani Binder (Indian River (FL)) and Chris Whitaker (Cochise (AZ)), as well as freshman Jaden Niel-sen-Skinner (South Salem (OR)). “We have three grad transfers: Markus Golder, Matt Hauser and Alonzo Walker - all guys that have played a lot of college basketball. They are really experienced,” said Peery. “Then we have two junior college guys with great experience in Kimani Binder and Chris Whitaker. And Jaden was a guy I recruited heavily from the time I got to Portland, so it is great to finally have him on campus. “The biggest thing that was on our radar as we were recruiting in the spring is we didn’t shoot the ball as well as we wanted to. We went out and got guys that flat out can shoot the ball better. Our skill level is up as far as shooting, passing and handling the ball. I have noticed that immediately as we have begun practice. We have a much more skilled team and I don’t think our athleticism took a dip at all.” Portland State’s style will start with Woods, a 6-1 junior, who has been one of the top ball-handlers and assist men in the Big Sky for the past two seasons. He was the Vikings’ leading scorer last season (15.0 ppg), but plays a more valuable role as a table-setter for the rest of the team (5.3 apg). That should benefit proven scorers Hauser, Golder, Binder and Whitaker in a season when the three-point line has been moved a little further from the basket. “The widened court, as well as the added shooting, should make Boo Boo’s life better,” Peery said. “He has more options to move and share the ball to different players, and drive the ball to better options. We have seen that immediately in practice.” Perhaps just as important has been the maturity of Woods as he leads the team. “Boo Boo has taken great strides in the leadership category. That comes with experience and age. He is going on his third year in the program. I have really seen that grow a lot in him,” said Peery. The back line is anchored by Nuhu (6-8), who led the Big Sky with 64 blocked shots last season while averaging 9.6 points and 7.0 rebounds. “Sal is obviously a big piece to what we do at both ends of the floor. At the back of the press he has really done a good job changing shots and making it difficult to score on us. He has really continued to get better offensively. His face up game is good and he can finish around the basket better,” said Peery. Also returning is senior forward Rashaad Goolsby (6-7, 4.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg), who played a valuable role off the bench last season. He provides length, defense and athleticism to the Vikings’ pressure defense. A pair of redshirt freshmen return for the Vikings in guard Kyle Greeley (6-5) and forward Trey Wood (6-9), adding length and depth to Portland State. About those newcomers… expect several to play a big role this season. “We have a bunch of guys that have good experience, know how we play and fit what we want to do,” Peery said of his newcomers. “The biggest thing is finding guys that fit you. And these days, you get all summer long to work out with the guys. So I don’t think the transition this time of year is as great as it used to be, because we are allowed to spend time with them in the summer.” Hauser, a 6-1 guard with three years of experience at Santa Clara, could be the shooter the Vikings need. He made 113 three-point field goals in an 85-game career with the Broncos. Hauser was also a big assist man and figures to play at shooting guard as well as spell Woods at point guard. Golder, a 6-6 guard/forward, will lend shooting, scoring and the length on perimeter defense that Peery loves. He is also a local product (Clackamas HS) who has come home and has a chance to play in front of friends and family. Golder averaged 9.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in two seasons at Valpo. Walker, a 6-6 forward, comes to the Vikings from Idaho State, and also played a season at Kent State.

Peery is excited about his length, defensive presence and athleticism. Like Goolsby, Walker may be a factor in front of the Vikings’ press. Binder and Whitaker have excellent resumes as big-time junior college scorers. Binder, a 6-3 guard, led the state of Florida junior colleges in scoring last season at 22.3 points per game. Whitaker, also a 6-3 guard, averaged 19.5 points and earned NJCAA Division I second team All-American. Portland State added Lamar Hamrick to the Vikings roster just as the academic year started. Hamrick is a senior transfer from Detroit Mercy where played one season for the Titans after two seasons at San Jacinto Junior College. Hamrick played in 27 games, with four starts, during the 2018-19 season at Detroit Mercy. He averaged 5.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. Nielsen-Skinner is the only true freshman to join the Vikings this season. A talented point guard, he figures to follow in Woods’ footsteps in the future. “Skinny” averaged over 20 points per game his last two seasons in high school and started every game over a four-year varsity career. Joining the Vikings as a walk-on is 6-5 guard Ian Burke. A sophomore, Burke played in 21 games last season at Seattle University.

TASTY VIKING HISTORY TIDBITS• Portland State begins its 24th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I. PSU played

basketball from 1946-1981 before discontinuing the program. Basketball was reinstated for the 1996-97 season. Portland State won Big Sky Conference regular season titles in 2004-05 and 2007-08. The Vikings won Big Sky Conference Tournament titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09, advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

• Portland State’s biggest star was Freeman Williams (1974-78), who still ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in college basketball history behind Pete Maravich. Williams, a Division I All-American in 1978, scored 3,249 points in his career.

• Former Viking Ime Udoka played seven seasons in the NBA. He started 75 games for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2006-07. Udoka is now an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, and won an NBA title with the team in 2013-14.

• Julius Thomas (2006-10), who holds Portland State records for games played (121), field goal percent-age in a season and career (.671/.663), and career wins (78), was a two-time Pro Bowler for the NFL’s Denver Broncos. Thomas played on two Big Sky Conference Championship/NCAA Tournament teams (2007-08, 2008-09) at PSU. He went on to play one season of football at PSU (2010). Thomas competed in Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. He later signed a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015 making him the highest paid tight end in the NFL, then moved on to play for the Miami Dolphins before retiring after the 2017 season.

2019-20 SEASON NOTES

BOO BOO WOODS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE Portland State point guard Holland Woods has been honored once again as he has been named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team. The honor is voted on by league media. Woods, a junior, was a second team All-Big Sky Conference selection at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season. He led the Vikings in scoring at 15.0 points per game (8th in the league) and ranked second in the Big Sky with 5.3 assists per game. Woods was also third in the league in steals (49). This marks the second straight year Woods has been named preseason All-Big Sky. Last year’s nod came after a 2017-18 season in which he was named the Big Sky’s Freshman of the Year. Woods will be a Viking team leader in 2019-20. The 6-1 guard from Phoenix’ Apollo High School now ranks fourth all-time at Portland State with 356 career assists in two seasons. He is on pace to break the assist record (Terry Adolph, 421) in late December. Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points in late December. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone.

Some highlights from Woods’ sophomore season:• He led the team in scoring 16 times, assists 27 times this season and had three double-doubles.• Scored in double figures 25 times with seven 20+ point games.• Went for 20 points and five assists at Stanford (11/28).• Had 27 points (8-14 FG, career-high 5-7 3-pt, 6-6 FT) and six assists in a win over Portland (12/5).• Scored 17 points with seven rebounds and seven assists at Montana State (1/3), making 10-10 FTs.• Posted a season-high 28 points (6-11 FG, 3-4 3-pt FG, 13-15 FT) in a win at Montana (1/5), adding

ALL-TIMECOACHING RECORDS

REMEMBERING DEANTE Portland State Basketball will honor the memory of Deante Strickland during the 2019-20 season. Strickland was a vital part of the Viking program from 2017-19 and earned his degree in June 2019. He died tragically last August. On game night, players will wear a patch on their jerseys with his initials and number 11.

Montana (3/7).

Weber State guard Jerrick Harding was named Preseason Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player. Also selected to the team were Sayeed Pridgett of Montana, Harald Frey of Montana State, and Mason Peatling and Jacob Davison of Eastern Washington.

THEY ONCE PLAYED AGAINST THE VIKINGS The nature of modern college basketball has become a transient one. The Viking program is no dif-ferent as PSU welcomed five Division I transfers and two junior college transfers to the roster this season (along with one true freshman). A few of the transfers have played against the Vikings in the past.• SR G Matt Hauser faced the Vikings on Dec. 9, 2017 while at Santa Clara. Hauser scored 22 points (8-12

FG, 6-8 3-pt), along with four rebounds and four assist. The Vikings won 87-84.• SR F Alonzo Walker faced the Vikings twice last season with playing for Idaho State. Walker had 10

points and six rebounds in a 69-67 ISU win in Pocatello. He had five points and eight rebounds in a 99-93 PSU win in Portland.

GRADUATE TRANSFERS Two of the new Vikings are graduate transfers. Matt Hauser has his Bachelor of Arts degree from Santa Clara in Communications. Alonzo Walker has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Idaho State in General Studies.

VIKING REDSHIRTS JR G Kimani Binder will redshirt the 2019-20 due to an achilles injury. FR G Jaden Nielsen-Skinner is also slated to redshirt the season.

THE 2019-20 SCHEDULE• In non-conference play, Portland State meets programs from six different major conferences: three

against the Big West, three against the WCC and one each against the Big 10, Pac-12, Mountain West and SWAC.

• During non-conference play, the Vikings will meet four teams they faced last season (UC Santa Barbara (N), L, 76-69; Portland Bible (H), W, 123-40; Portland (H), W, 87-78; Loyola Marymount (H), L, 85-58).

• PSU plays two lower division opponents, Puget Sound and Portland Bible. The Vikings are 47-1 against lower division schools since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996, including winning 34 in a row.

• Big Sky Conference play consists of a 20-game conference schedule. The quirk of the 2019-20 confer-ence schedule is that Portland State will be the “lone wolf” among the 11 Big Sky teams, meaning it will not have a travel partner. The result is a slightly different schedule than normal which includes five Monday games (three at home), two stretches of seven days off and one stretch of eight days off.

• In all Portland State plays 14 counting home games and 18 road games.• The Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 11-14 at CenturyLink Arena in Boise. The bottom

six seeds will compete in first-round play on Wednesday. The top five seeds will earn quarterfinal round berths and open play on Thursday. Semifinals are on Friday, with the Championship on Saturday. The winner advances to the NCAA Tournament.

WHAT IS PEERY PRESSURE? Portland State Head Coach Barret Peery emphasizes a full-court pressure defense that forces turn-overs and creates transition opportunities. Then, on the offensive end, his team relentlessly attacks the offensive glass. The results proved out quite well in 2017-18. Here are the analytics of those two areas.• The Vikings forced 18.1 turnovers per game and had a +5.4 turnover margin (1st in the nation). • The Vikings averaged 14.5 offensive rebounds per game (2nd in the nation) while opponents averaged

10.2 offensive rebounds. • In all, the difference in total turnovers (184) and total offensive rebounds (145) meant 329 extra pos-

sessions compared to opponents (9.7). • It is no wonder the Vikings had 361 more field goal attempts and 199 more free throw attempts than

their opponents last year and 85.2 points (3rd in the nation).

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

PORTLAND STATE Portland State University, located in Portland, has an enrollment of 27,285 students. PSU was founded in 1946 as Vanport College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in 1946-47, but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference (NAIA) beginning in 1948-49 to 1964-65. PSU became a four-year institution - Portland State College - in 1955. The Vikings won five OCC titles and competed in the NAIA playoffs twice. Portland State joined the NCAA in 1965-66. The Vikings reached the College Division playoffs in 1966-67. College Division was the forerunner to Division II. Portland State was given university status in 1969. During the 1970s, Portland State competed as a Division I program. The Vikings’ biggest star was Freeman Williams, who still ranks as the second all-time leading scorer in college bas-ketball history behind Pete Maravich. Williams, a Division I All-American in 1978, scored 3,249 points in his career. The university dropped the men’s basketball program in 1981 for budgetary reasons. It re-mained dormant until 1996-97 when basketball was reinstated and Portland State joined the Big Sky Conference. PSU has had 10 winning records in its 21 years as a member. Portland State won the Big Sky Conference regular season title in 2004-05 (19-9, 11-3), but lost in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals, missing a chance for the NCAA Tournament. In 2007-08, the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament ti-tles going 23-10, 14-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The resulting NCAA berth was the first at the Di-vision I level for the Viking program. The Vikings lost to eventual national champion Kansas, but concluded the most successful season in school history. In 2008-09, PSU once again won 23 games - matching the school record - and reached a second straight NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the second year in a row. With 78 wins from 2007-10, PSU had its most successful era in school history. Portland State has had 19 first team All-Big Sky Conference selections since 1996, includ-ing two Big Conference Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley, Jeremiah Dominguez), three Big Sky Defensive Players of the Year (Seamus Boxley - twice, Scott Morrison), and four Big Sky Newcomers of the Year (Jason Hartman, Ime Udoka, Dupree Lucas, Jeremiah Dominguez), one 6th Man of the Year (DaShaun Wiggins) and two Big Sky Freshmen of the Year (Seamus Boxley, Holland Woods). Among Vikings in the NBA, Freeman Wil-liams and Ime Udoka each spent seven playing seasons in the league. Udoka is currently an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.

THE VIKING PAVILION Portland State Athletics began play in the new Viking Pavilion during the 2018-19 season. The long-awaited arena and events facility became a first-class venue for the university and the Viking Athletics program. The Viking Pavilion, a 141,700-square foot facility seats 3,094 people for basketball. Seating is more than double the size of the old Stott Center main gym. The facility also has a new weight room, locker rooms, academic center, administrative offices, OHSU Sports Medicine Center, and Viking Athletics Hall of Fame. Other additions include five new classrooms, new student lounges and a new cafe. The $52.1 million project, which was part renovation and part rebuild, was designed by Woofter Architects/Perkins+Will. Fortis Construction was the general contractor. $19.1 million came from private gifts and PSU project funds, $7.5 million was a sponsorship from OHSU, $24 million are from state bonds and $1.5 million are from student fees. None of the funding came from general operating funds or tuition dollars. Formal fund-raising began in 2013. An official ground breaking took place on April 23, 2016.• The crowd of 2,077 that attended the game against Montana State (3/9/19)

in the Viking Pavilion was the largest crowd of the season and was the third over the 2,000 mark (also vs. Portland and Montana).

• PSU averaged 1,238 fans in 16 home games during 2018-19 - the best reg-ular season attendance since 2002-03. The last time PSU averaged as many as 1,000 fans in attendance was 2009-10 (1,009).

• The largest recent crowd, prior to the opening of the Pavilion, was a sellout of that 1,500 attended the Portland State/Oregon State game in the old Stott Center gym on Dec. 12, 2012.

2018-19 SEASON REVIEW The Portland State Vikings concluded their 2018-19 season with a quar-terfinal loss in the Big Sky Conference Tournament to Weber State. That left them with a season record of 16-16. The Vikings were 11-9 and tied for fourth in the Big Sky.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS• PSU finished at 16-16 overall, 11-9 in the Big Sky Conference. PSU’s 16 wins

were the second-most since the 2013-14 season. It was also the first confer-ence record over .500 since that season. The tie for fourth place was the best since a third-place finish in 2011-12.

• The Vikings were the hottest team in the Big Sky in the final month of the season, winning seven out of eight games heading into the post-season. The only loss was on a last-second shot by Eastern Washington in Cheney... the Vikings’ five-game winning streak prior to that was its longest since

a five-gamer during the 2016-17 season. The last time there was a longer streak was in 2008-09 (six games).

• Portland State opened a brand-new home in the Viking Pavilion in 2018-19. The Vikings won their first game at home (71-64 over UC Riverside), the cross-town rivalry game (87-78 over Portland) and went 12-4 overall... PSU ended the year on an eight-game home winning streak.

• PSU averaged 1,238 fans in 16 home games - the best regular season at-tendance since 2002-03... a crowd of 2,077 that attended the game against Montana State (3/9) in the Viking Pavilion was the largest crowd of the season and was the third over the 2,000 mark (also vs. Portland and Mon-tana)... PSU’s attendance was more than double the previous two seasons. The last time PSU averaged as many as 1,000 fans in attendance was 2009-10 (1,009).

• The Vikings swept Big Sky Conference Champion Montana, but unfortunate-ly did not get another chance to face the Griz in the Big Sky Tournament.

• SO G Holland “Boo Boo” Woods was named second team All-Big Sky Con-ference. Woods led the Vikings in scoring (15.0), assists (5.3) and steals (1.6), ranking seventh in scoring, second in assists and third in steals in the Big Sky.

• Portland State led the Big Sky Conference in rebounding (40.0), rebounding margin (7.0), steals (8.3), and offensive rebounds (15.6). The Vikings also led the nation in offensive rebounding.

• JR C Sal Nuhu led the Big Sky Conference in blocked shots with a 2.0 average (64). SO G Holland Woods tied for the Big Sky lead in assists in conference games (5.5).

• SO C Brendan Rumel was named Academic All-Big Sky Conference.
