    e land that is occupied today byMultnomah County was inhabit-ed for centuries by two bands ofUpper Chinook Indians. In 1843,William Overton saw great com-mercial potential for this land butlacked the funds required to lea land claim. He struck a bargainwith his partner, Asa Lovejoy ofBoston, Massachusetts: for 25,

    Overton would share his claim tothe 640-acre (2.6 km2) site. Overtonlater sold his half of the claim toFrancis W. Pettygrove of Portland,Maine. Pettygrove and Lovejoy eachwished to name the new city aerhis respective home town. In 1845,this controversy was settled with acoin toss, which Pettygrove won in aseries of two out of three tosses.

    HistoryPortland is well known for its mi-crobreweries. Oregon Public Broad-casting has documented Portlandsrole in the microbrew revolution inthe United States in a report calledBeervana. Some il lustrate Port-landers interest in the beverage byan oer made in 1888 when localbrewer Henry Weinhard volun-teered to pump beer from his brew-

    ery into the newly dedicated Skid-more Fountain. Portlands modernabundance of microbreweries datesto the 1980s when state law waschanged to allow consumption ofbeer on brewery premises. Breweryinnovation was supported by theabundance of local ingredients.

    BreweriesPortland is one of only four citiesin the U.S. with extinct volcanoeswithin its boundaries. Mount TaborPark is known for its scenic viewsand historic reservoirs.

    Forest Park is the largest wildernesspark within city limits in the UnitedStates, covering more than 5,000acres (2,023 ha). Portland is also

    home to Mill Ends Park, the worldssmallest park (a two-foot-diametercircle, the parks area is only about0.3 m2). Washington Park is justwest of downtown, and is home tothe Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japa-nese Garden, and the InternationalRose Test Garden.

    Portland has been named the bestcity in the world for street food byseveral publications, including theU.S. News & World Report andCNN. Food carts are extremelypopular within the city, with over600 licensed carts, making Portlandone of the most robust street foodscenes in North America.
