2 Quay Marina’s PORTISHEAD Yearbook 2017

The docks were constructed by widening and impounding the tidal pill before which, the waters of the Bristol Channel reached up as far as the old tide mill, now the Mezzé Restaurant at the old White Lion Inn. A mooring point for boats can still be seen on the wall opposite the Inn. The docks at Portishead and Avonmouth were built to help relieve Bristol City Docks from the problems encountered due to the growth in traffic and increasing size of trading ships making their way up the Avon to Bristol. The original lock was 140 metres by 20 metres and visiting ships were laden with timber, petrol, grain, and in later year’s phosphorus and coal.

Trade and tourism were on the up, increased by the newly built single line broad gauge railway track which linked Portishead Pier to Bristol. Portishead had become a popular destination for day-trippers and tourists, who would take advantage of the local bathing beaches and stand and view the many boats which would wait in King Road just off the pier for the tides to take them down channel or up the Avon on their approach to Bristol. One of the familiar sights viewed from Portishead Pier was the Bristol Training Ship ‘Formidable’. The old warship lay anchored off Portishead for nearly 40 years and throughout that

time gave nautical training to over 3,500 poor and destitute boys to prepare them for service in the Royal and Merchant Navies.

The land surrounding the docks was initially used as a granary and timber wharf. On the Western side of the dock stood Baileys mill, a landmark eightstorey building with it’s accompanying chimney. It was a flaking mill which processed grain for both the brewing industry and to make cattle feed. In 1911 the mill suffered a near fatal fire, which caused much damage and smouldered for 4 days. The local brigades struggled to bring the burning building under control, so as soon as the tide permitted, the Bristol salvage vessel ‘Bulldog’ entered the dock and pumped 700 gallons of water per minute on to the burning building. The mill was finally demolished in the 1950’s to make way for Portishead ‘B’ power station.

In 1926 construction started on Portishead ‘A’ power station on the land behind the mill. Coal-fired generation of electricity began in 1929 and supplied the whole of Bristol, North Somerset and part of South Somerset. In 1937 the first tall stack was added, standing 350 feet high. After the war generating capacity was increased by the addition of a second tall stack. In the 1950’s work began on the construction of Portishead ‘B’ power station and stacks 3 & 4 were erected, 383 feet high. The chimneys themselves and the smoke they produced were a familiar landmark for miles around and could be seen clearly from the Welsh coast. When the Somerset coalfield finally closed in 1972 the power station was converted to oil, however the cost of oil was on the increase and the Portishead stations were then only used as standby generators. Portishead ‘A’ was closed in 1976 followed by ‘B’ in 1982. Over the years ash and clinker from the Power Stations have been used to raise ground levels around the dock so that it is no longer possible to see the original shape and size of the old tidal pill.

On the east side of the dock, the Albright and Wilson phosphorus works were built during the 1950s to process imported phosphate rock and convert it to liquid phosphorus. This process required a high use of electricity, supplied by the Portishead power stations and when the cost of oil rose in the 70s, so did the price of the electricity. The implications were enormous and production was transferred to Newfoundland where processing costs were lower. Portishead became used as a transfer and distribution station, handling the liquid phosphorus that was brought to the docks aboard the Albright ships the Explorer and the Pioneer.

History

The ships were fitted out with large tanks encased in heated jackets to keep the phosphorus in a liquid state. This was then transferred to holding tanks ready for distribution. The decommissioning of the site was a lengthy process that took about 4 years culminating in the demolition and clearance of site in 1999 in readiness for the re-development of the docks.

Commercial shipping ceased using the docks in 1992 and although there was still marine traffic passing on route to and from the Royal Portbury Dock and Avonmouth, the only visiting boats to Portishead were yachts and small pleasure craft owned by local residents. The docks were derelict and after a program of demolition the site was cleared in readiness for the exciting new Port Marine development to evolve. While construction of town houses and luxury apartments began on the west side of the dock work began on the new Marina, the centre piece of the £400 million development. A new lock measuring 40 metres by 9 metres was built within the old lock barrel with state of the art gates and HMI control. The first phase of the pontoons and the berth holders facilities were installed ready for the grand opening in May 2001.

A selection of cafes and restaurants frame the marina with Aqua Italia, and Bottelino’s sharing an unrivalled position at the head of the marina and enjoying views stretching down towards the boats nestled on the pontoons. La Marina Restaurant is positioned just outside the Lock Gates in a superb position to watch the vessels come and go, and behind the Hoist Dock apron, in the heart of the action, is the vibrant Hall & Woodhouse Bar Restaurant. The innovative Bar & Restaurant, constructed out of shipping containers also includes stunning bathroom facilities for our Marina berth holders.

For more energetic visitors to the marina and within easy walking distance is the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre with gym, courts and a swimming pool. Alternatively, the footpaths through Eastwood lead to Battery Point, the Lake Grounds and the start of the coast path to Clevedon. Portishead’s Open Air Pool is situated at the Northern end of the Lake Grounds and throughout the summer months, you can take the opportunity to sit in the sun whilst enjoying a stunning view of the Bristol Channel from the terraces. Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve can be found to the East of the Marina. This area of land, previously known as “the

Ashlands”, has been redeveloped and the large pools and ponds are now home to a variety of animals.

Provisions can be purchased from the My Local store at the northern end of the marina and this also provides the nearest cash point, should funds be required. At the head of the marina is Waitrose supermarket, which has both a cash point and a pharmacy. From there, the town centre is just a 2 minute walk away and has further supermarkets and grocers for general supplies. Most of the High Street banks and building societies have branches in the High Street and the new town library offers an internet café, books, and DVD’s.

Portishead benefits from great access to the Motorway networks, being just 3 miles from Junction 19 on the M5. A regular bus service runs throughout the day from Portishead to Bristol and the surrounding area, bus timetables and telephone numbers for the local taxi companies are available from the Marina office. Mainline train stations at Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway serve the area and air flights to destinations in Europe and beyond can be taken from Bristol International Airport.

Last year Newfound Friends raised an incredible £22,000. Whizz (pictured) has been awarded the PDSA Order of Merit for saving nine people and a dog during a ten year water rescue career.

• Keep your boat keys separate from your engine keys.

• Always keep your boat locked when no-one is on board, even for a short time.

• Use strong padlocks or rimlocks on all your hatches, entry points and cockpit lockers.

IMPROVE YOUR SECURITYConstantly check and improve the security on your boat. It’s a good idea to fit an alarm and use a visible sticker to say that one is fitted. Make sure your cockpit lockers can be properly locked, and check that your main hatch and fore-hatch are strong. Also think about having a strongbox down below. If you don’t think something is secure, get it fixed.

YOUR RNLI LIFEBOAT STATION AT PORTISHEAD

It has been a very busy time for the Lifeboat volunteers, since their adoption in to the RNLI on 24th April 2015. They have been working hard with their launch and recovery techniques from the new location, training brand new crew, opened their RNLI shop as well as holding numerous fundraising events to keep the much needed funds coming in.

The official Opening Ceremony for the Station was in June 2015, followed closely by the Naming Ceremony which marked the arrival of their new Atlantic

85 Lifeboat, in March 2016. Both occasions were celebrated with a large number of guests including the then Chairman of the RNLI, Mr Charles Hunter-Pease and RNLI trustee Sir Timothy Laurence. A number of invited guests attended along with members of the local community. My Lady Anne was funded by Mr Bill Wraith, which arrived in September 2015 and sprung in to action just 2 days after being on station.

During 2016 the volunteer crew have had 47 call outs at the time of going to print, which is a new record number of launches in one year. This has resulted in assisting 59 people, 4 dogs and saving 2 lives. This proves that the lifeboat charity is continuing to provide a much needed and vital service on the Estuary.

Bob Crane, Lifeboat Operations Manager, says ‘I think the reason that we are even busier is that now we have a higher profile and are in the public eye more than at our last Station on Sugar Loaf Beach. Also hopefully our community are listening to our requests to call us out as early as possible enabling us get to the casualty before any situation worsens. Our team of Education Volunteers are also working very hard to spread the message about water safety. They have had a busy year and have given over 2,800 talks to adults and children from all kinds of groups and clubs, this all helps to keep people safe on and beside the water.’

It costs £90,000 per year to keep the lifeboat service operational so we organise a large number of

fundraising events throughout the year, if you would like to come along and join the friendly team of volunteers just get in touch. We can also arrange for one of our Education Volunteers to come along and give a talk to your club, just send us an email [email protected], or message us on our Facebook page at RNLI Portishead or come along and speak to our shop volunteers who will pass on your details.

The RNLI are the charity that saves lives at sea, with your continued support we can carry this vital voluntary service on.

Our deepest thanks to all of you!

For more than 20 years the club has brought together small boat owners and their crews to encourage and foster interest in the sport of sea angling. The opening of the marina has ensured ease of access to fabulous inshore fishing throughout the year with species ranging from prime bass and cod to the hard fighting conger eel and specimen sized thornback ray.

Members of the club are able to take advantage of shared experiences and while at sea clearly recognise the safety benefits of fishing with colleagues in close proximity and with radio communication should difficulties arise. For those with a more competitive streak opportunities arise on a regular basis to take part in club competitions where friendly rivalry results in the awarding of prizes for the biggest catch.

As a club we meet on a monthly basis at the Oceans Coffee Shop, next to the boat yard, to conduct business, to listen to the occasional guest speaker and to enlighten and amuse each other

Located at Pump Square in the village of Pill, the club is just 10 minutes from the Marina by road. “Down Along” is the club’s motto, and is an abbreviation of the sailing directions from Pill, where the club moorings are located. Since the Pilot Cutters were based at Pill, it has been used as an euphemism for ‘going sailing’.

There is an active, year round racing calendar, with most races limited to two hours either side of high water, there are however several all day races, and an annual ‘offshore’ two day race. These races are an excellent way to polish sailing skills, so novices are actively welcomed.

Most weekends during the season offer a cruise, when new members can learn the pilotage of the Bristol Channel in the safety of company. Wednesday nights are club ni ghts, and social and informative events are regularly held. New members and visitors are always welcome. Visit: www.pccsail.com or email: [email protected]

GOOD SAFETY PRACTICE • Take care on the pontoons, particularly in adverse

conditions.

• Do not cycle or run on the pontoons.

• When walking down the access ramps use the hand rails provided for your safety.

• Ensure young children and nonswimming adults wear lifejackets whilst on the pontoons.

• Do not allow children to “ride” in trolleys.

MARINA SOS STATIONS These are positioned at intervals on the Marina pontoons, the closest pile caps are marked in red and white with ‘SOS Station’. Each station houses a fire extinguisher and life ring. Rescue ladders are positioned nearby, locations for these can be found on the Marina plan on pages 20 & 21. It is very important that all Marina users familiarise themselves with their locations.

FALLING IN There are fixed rescue ladders on each pontoon leg. Please locate the position of your nearest ladder – you may need it one day! The ladders are marked with a yellow flag for added visibility.

SPEED RESTRICTIONS Please observe the “DEAD SLOW” speed limit and do not create excessive wash within the confines of the marina.
