Timber in the City was a project based in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York. The competition challenged us to design a mid-rise, mixed-use complex with affordable housing units, a job/training educational facility, a center for innovative manufacturing of wood technology, and a distribution center for the products developed here. This project was also a means to regenerate a dissipating urban manufacturing sector and address the housing needs of New York City. Our team had to propose construction systems in scenarios that draw optimally on the performance characteristics of a variety of wood technologies.

Timber in the City etait un projet à Red Hook , à Brooklyn, New York.

Our design focused on completely new ways of using timber structurally. We found our strengths within the group and split up the work based on those strengths. My personal focus was the structure itself. Our team would get together each day to discuss the overall design we wanted, and then go back into our personal work. Our project was the only one to have three mid rise towers on its site. We wanted each living unit to have a view of the bay or New York City. Adjacent to the site was a large community garden. We decided that the manufacturing and the shipping zones would be designed based off a hill, and the continuation of that community garden.

Our decision to turn the units off north-south axis was based on the location of NYC and the bay. This allowed each unit to have a view to either of those locales.

The structure was based on a system of braces. We used large LVL Timber for the main shear walls, and connected Glulam Beam/Columns to the LVL walls. This system held the living modules on the mid-rise towers.

The Spa in Pre-Saint Didier, Aosta, Italy was inspired by a vacation from one of our professors. We were challenged to design outside of the visual stimulus. The challenge was a spa is more than just visually appealing, but also appealing to the touch, smell, and sounds. The class worked individually to design their own unique spa. We read The Eyes of the Skin by Juhani Pallasmaa. This book illustrated for us what architecture can be when visual stimuli is not the only controlling factor. My personal approach to the project was through Peter Zumpthor. I found a similar desire in my own spa to what several of his works achieved.

Spa dei Sensi

The Spa of the Senses, original eh? Well my concept was not actually based on the senses. My concept was based on the original spa, Roman Baths. I looked into several Roman Baths to find a few certain things. 1. They are very inwardly focused. Which contradicts what you would want in a spa with such beautiful views. 2. The have a process in which people were to use the Roman Baths. 3. Heavy materials and very defined space.

I used those three ideas to help generate the overall design for the Spa dei Sensi.

Roman Baths were inwardly focused, but this project demanded views to the mountains and the beauty that abounded in all directions. When designing I wanted to stick to the ideas of the Roman Bath. I made the actual pools and massage rooms closed, with focused views up to the mountains and sky, but for the person travelling between spas or outside, they could view the entire landscape. The materials were chosen to imitate the hard cold surfaces of the old Roman Baths, but with more sustainable features.

Oklahoma State University Museum of Art was an immense project. The challenge was to not only design the museum, but to take it through all of the stages of design, from Schematic Design to Constructions Documents. The class was even required to design and calculate the structural and HVAC systems. This was a comprehensive project putting together all what we have learned into one design. The design required Temporary Exhibit space as well as Permanent, a Cafe, Classrooms, Offices for Professors, an Auditorium, and staging area.

Like all projects, concept and development of concept was first on the list. My concept was derived from finding the functions did not have to go all in one building, or that a museum, did not have to be one big box or shape to be a good museum. My concept was a realization of spaces rather than some phrase or image. The secondary concept was to create bring the outdoor galleries into the museum itself. Making those the connections the other zones.

How light can interact with the space was the main goal in the design. In the section you can see the systems in place for lighting.

The hall lighting was particularly fun. Since the halls were made of translucent panels, linear lights were placed behind the panels to make the wall glow.

During the day, the sun made the halls glow, not needing the linear lights under the panels to be turned on.

Boston Air Rights project was a master planning project for the South Station area in Boston Massachusetts. This project was for our last design studio, and it looked into Urban Design. In teams of five or more, each group designed a master plan, and then designed a focus space within the master plan. The challenge for this project was the train station and the trains. We were designing based off the air rights of the property, not working from the ground up. This moved our class from designing smaller projects to learning what it takes to design in the context of a city, and the necessary steps it takes to make it work.

Boston Air RightsThe Process and The Product

Our team found that Boston was wanting a new arts sector. We found documentation of need of an opera house, MIT wanted to create an arts college, Boston wanted more Artist Living, and art galleries. We found the location to be centrally located from other smaller arts locations, creating connections in Boston for our proposal. The Innovation District for Boston was just across the harbor, so we decided to also make physical connection to it and the 100 Acres Plan.

The project evolved from our master plan to designing a focus area. The master plan consisted of many changes throughout the course of the project, the focus space had the most change. The concept for the master plan and focus space was the fragmentation of the arts to perpetuate the human experience. There were three zones on the plaza that were at different heights. Our mid rise towers were even split into segments. Using sun angles, we carved our towers as if they were sculptures themselves. We had to design a new head house, which we had only air rights, so our structures were built above and around the head house. The use of sun angles to carve our towers meant the light would penetrate to the head house at its busiest times of day.

Masterplan and Church

HAITI ARISE

Engineering Ministries International CanadaSummer Internship

Haiti ARISE is a Ministry in Grande Goave, Haiti. As a member of Engineering Ministries International I was sent, with a team, to Haiti. We were there to design a new church and master plan a new campus. Not only was it professionally beneficial, but this project was personally beneficial. I was working closely with engineers and an architect to deliver something beautiful to Haiti. The personal benefit came from the culture I was engulfed in, I learned to work and teach in a completely different culture where I would not have had that experience with a normal internship.

During my short time in Haiti and extensive time in Canada I was challenged as a designer. I found myself wanting to design high style in today’s US standards, but that was too much for the builders of Haiti. I had to even learn about confined masonry construction in order to know more about what I could design, and what I could not. In the end, we were able to give them the church they were looking for, EMI decided to challenge them with something a little harder to build than they were use to building. Through school I was taught that constraints lead to great designs, I know that to be true now.
