AAL 496 Constructed wetlands as pocket

parks

Duck Creek is a natural wash that runs through the southeast of Las Vegas for

over 10 miles before draining into Lake Mead. The wash supports a variety of

wildlife along its corridor. This project proposed to create small pocket parks

from constructed wetlands along the length of the Duck Creek run

The primary goal of the project was to retain and

purify water a through a succession of wetlands

before releasing it into Lake Mead.

A trail system along the creek edge would connect

the pocket parks and be utilized as a walking trail.

Along the trail interpretive signage provides

information about the plants, animals and

processes of the surrounding area.

These pocket parks could increase wildlife

habitat, purify water, improve air quality while

becoming a recreational and educational tool.

AAL 484 Amargosa River Walk

A project stemming from UNLV’s Rural Community Outreach

Program where students partner with and lend design

assistance to rural communities in the surrounding Las Vegas

area.

AAL 484 Amargosa River Walk

The proposed design was to create

a river walk with small pocket

parks along the rivers edge and

through the alkali meadows while

not disrupting the habitat of the

endangered Amargosa Toad.

3rd year

AAL 384 Mexican Garden

The project was to represent a

Mexican garden and to build a

model, mock-up details and to

construct full size model

using a 10’x20’ area.

Partnered with 2 classmates,

the design of the garden was

created to represent 3

periods of Mexican gardens

(landscapes).

The first period was pre-Colombian

(Aztec & Mayan), their temples are

represented by the stepped stairs

at the head of the project. The

second period was after Spanish

colonization, represented by the

arched seats at the foot of the

project. The third period is the

modern period, representing

vibrant colors and the long

reflecting pool (most notably

influenced by Luis Barragan).

After constructing the outline of the

garden, the reflecting pool was

filled with water and stones, it was

then furnished with vegetation that

represents plants/trees that can be

found in the arid region in and

around Mexico.

This project paired one landscape student from UNLV

to assist an architecture student in their 6th year

studio design project on the landscaping of their

site/building. This particular student proposed a

multi-level spa/health & fitness facility that had

different landscape features attributed to each level.

Plants grown on site would have

specific medicinal properties that

would be converted to lotions,

creams, etc. to be sold on the first

level of the facility. Plants would

enhance the activities occurring on

each level through sight and smells.
