Praxis3 is a unique architectural design fi rm established in 1997 with the mission of intersecting design excellence with pragmatic problem-solving, as applied to some of the most challenging sites and building programs. As sophisticated design projects have demanded a greater range of expertise than ever before, Praxis3 has brought together in collaboration a team of skilled professionals from the disciplines of architec-ture, planning, and design. Our singular combination of individual talents and extensive knowledge base, developed through years of practice, allows us to offer our clients a comprehensive approach to the building process; one that enables us not only to assess a wider range of building options, but to do so with greater speed and accuracy. As responsible professionals we approach each of our projects as its own unique set of issues, doing extensive research on each of them, asking hard questions and listening carefully. Then we respond with the sort of creative thinking which permits us to assess each project’s unique design possibili-ties.

Our explorations and built projects have led to numerous recognitions, including the commission among only 10 architects nationwide to speculate upon the “House for the Next Millennium”, presented in a major exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. Our recent mixed-use housing commissions for clients including the Atlanta Housing Authority, Trammell Crow Residential, and Integral Properties, are rec-ognized as the leading edge in Atlanta’s inner-city revival along Memorial Drive and historic Auburn Avenue.

The Phone Factory Lofts, in collaboration with Brock/Green, received the Atlanta Urban Design Commission Award of Excellence for its adaptive re-use of a historic commercial building. The 1995 community revi-talization project for the Mechanicsville community was a front page story in the Atlanta Constitution. In that same year, the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta (CODA) awarded Romm, Pearsall, and Dimitropoulos fi rst place in a nationwide design competition resulting in the construction of the Memory Theater Project at Heritage Park in the Summerhill neighborhood. In the Automotive Studio, The Nalley Lexus Dealership of Atlanta won fi rst place at the Institute of Store Planners 2004 Store Design Awards and an Award of Excellence from the American Concrete Institute.

The partners and associates have also designed advanced technology facilities, among them, the computer center for Coca-Cola in Atlanta, and, in collaboration with Diller + Scofi dio, New York, was commissioned by Turner Broadcasting to design two large scale urban media “icons” to give a landmark identity to the CNN

Center in Atlanta.

praxis3 philosophy

1: theory to practice2: diversity of practice3: collaborative practice

Praxis, literally, theory into action, describes the fi rst of three basic philosophical tenets of praxis3. The fi rm aims to test the possibilities of emerging design theories and ideals as applied to the real world practice of development and construction. Praxis3 pursues design problems that may involve issues of social, political, or cultural signifi cance, as often intersected with advanced technical expertise. The fi rm’s mixed-use projects are a good example of complex structures with tight budgets and timetables accomplished with an eye to providing excellent design to a variety of clients and end-users of many income levels. Praxis also seeks a variety and diversity of design experience. Automotive, mixed-use, cultural and institutional building design, plus web and print design are all part of a complete design continuum at the fi rm. Praxis3 believes that a broad range of design can be interrelated, and that work in several fi elds strengthens abilities in all, providing for a diversity of perspective in practice not usually open to single discipline or overly specialized fi rms.

Finally, the fi rm actively seeks a collaborative model for practice. Praxis encourages a culture of design collaboration both within the offi ce and between various outside people and fi rms. Singular project teams unique to each assignment bring a rich culture of varied expertise. Ongoing active collaborations continue with architects Frederick Pearsall, Harris Dimitropoulos, and J.W. Robinson & Associates. Past collaborations have included signifi cant work with New York based Diller + Scofi dio and Amy Landes-burg, and workshops with media theorists Robert Cheatham and Gregory Ulmer of the University of Florida. Internal project design collaborations are open to a range of design directions and thought. In short, praxis seeks the best ideas from a group of varied and strong designers without forsaking the pos-sibility of individual inspiration or vision on any particular project.

This private residence was built in a single-family Atlanta neighborhood. The house is designed

around a central projection scrim/solar clock. This metal fabric wall is also used to separate

public and private parts of the house and to set up an axis of entry from both the front and

rear sides of the structure.

Atlanta, GA

This project highlights an example of the grass-roots community building movement taking

place in Atlanta through the orchestration of the project, the generous resources of corporations,

non-profi t organizations, the City, and volunteers have been coordinated in the building of a

new community of single-family homes near the Olympic Stadium. Each home contributes to

an emerging, but already strong neighborhood; one that has maintained its sense of history.

At the same time, each house has been crafted to express the individual qualities of home

that are important to the family living within.

Fripp Island ResidencesDavid and Elizabeth Cosgrove

Fripp Island, SC

Two houses on Fripp Island, a resort on the South Carolina coast, for an Atlanta builder

were designed to conform to strict design regulations. The island’s guidelines restricted

use of roof forms and materials in attempting to establish an aesthetic conformity for each

island neighborhood. Working within these guidelines Verge’s design for two prototypi-

cal residences take advantage of their site on the intercoastal waterway focusing on the

east west axis from entrance drive to the marsh (and waterway) view. Both houses create

strong internal focus towards the water and away from neighboring houses located only

fi fteen feet away on either side. Strict budget requirements, wind and fl ood protection code

requirements also had a major impact on each design.

This project received the 1996 Atlanta Preservation Center Historic Home Award for "the

adaptive use of historic commercial buildings for residential purposes." Occupying a promi-

nent site across from The Carter Presidential Library, the successful rehabilitation of this

structure was a critical element within the Old Fourth Ward's Olympic-impact revitalization

plan. Atlanta's fi rst loft development which encompasses an affordable housing component,

the sixty-three mixed-income apartments of 820 Ralph McGill became a landmark in both

their physical and social incarnations. The Atlanta Preservation Center 1996 award cited

the project for its attention to historic detail, preservation of architectural integrity, and use

of sympathetic materials.
