2014 l NOMINEE BOLD & BEAUTIFUL STUDENT FACADE DESIGN AWARD, Rotterdam

KU Leuven selected four students to represent the university at the Bold & Beautiful Student Facade Design competition in Rotterdam. (Gevel 2014 - Ahoy Rotterdam) Four of the twelve entries came from KU Leuven, three from Hochschule Teutoburger Forest (Germany) and five of the TU Delft. Students were challenged to come up with a façade design that demonstrates both technical guts and eye for beauty.

Incorporation of a monastery in a residential area in Flanders, Belgium.

This is a short story about a retired mason whose wife died. The poor man seeks therapy in building, in arranging brick after brick, dozens of bricks;thousands of bricks; until they become walls, until they become spaces.

The mason builds around & through existing houses.Even the street is covered in brick, in order to slow cars down

and make them aware of the monastery and its meaning.

However, the facade is not merely a separation between two spaces, and should at least suffice to the require-ments of a modern facade.The knits thus can be used in several ways and offer different functions. When used as a ‘solid’ wall, two knits are strung up in between a bearing structure. Between the two fabrics, a wooden framework is used to attach the soft insulation to. The interior space can benefit from the ‘strokability’ as well as from the acoustic quality the wall offers. When knitted loosely and spanned in front of a window, the fabric works as solar shading and offers a specific atmosphere to the interior of the building.

The knit’wall was designed to incorporate expression and technique/technical detail into one. Starting with expression, it was the intention to create a facade that would attract people by triggering the senses of both user and passer-by.The main starting point was tactility. In a first experiment, the idea came up to work with large knits and create a soft wall. The perception to the sense of touch has the power to bring people closer to the building and interact with them.

The projectsite for the new museum is located on the Winston Churchill-quay in Ostend. The quay is surrounded by the Montgomerydock and the more open water of the Tijdock, the ‘entrance’ of the harbour. The peninsula relates to the city in the east and to the fishery in the west.

The museumsite itself is situated in between the central station and the ‘zeewezen’-building and visible from the promenade, the southern city access roads and the port area.

In the maritime museum, the visual focus lies on the vessels. The biggest ones lie at the Eastside of the quay, as if they have just tied up. This way the vessels and the museum relate to the surrounding water, which is not unimportant in a city that wants to profile itself as ‘City by the Sea’.

With the future of the city in mind, the museum also includes the site of the slowly deteriorating fishery. In case the fishing activities completely stop, new projects can be launched and the museum will function as the connection between the city and the old fishery area.

The short sides of the shipyards lean over towards the water. While the long sides of the yard are translucent, the short sides are trans-parent, framing both the interior to exterior- exterior to interior views.

The tour along the vessels is visually inferior and thus subtle placed in a one storey volume that connects the yards.

Slopes soften the transition between the building and the public square creating a second promenade along the exterior of the building.

The yards are constructed with trusses.

Because of the large height extra, smaller, horizontal bars are implemented into the structure to decrease the risk of twisting

The width of the shipyards is max. 20m. To decrease the height of the beams spanning the yard, extra inclined columns were added.

To bear the wind load, wind braces are placed in the roof structure.

De Loodsen worden opgebouwd uit vakwerken. (werken op trek en druk)

In de vakwerken worden extra (dunnere) verticalen voorzien die het risico op knik verhinderen.

De breedte van de loodsen bedraagt max. 20m en brengt dus grote overspanningen met zich mee. Om de hoogte van de liggers te reduceren worden schuine kolommen voorzien die de overspanning met 4m verkleinen.

Om de windlasten op te vangen worden windverbanden geplaatst in het vlak van het dak. Dit in 2 zones van 2meter breed.

The floor slabs are not placed on the horizontal elements of the main structure. Cellular steel beams are placed onto the vertical columns of the trusses. This method creates the freedom of choosing the height and place of the different levels without the restriction of the primary structure.

A concrete core guarantees horizontal stability.

The horizontal elements of the structure are placed behind the plane of the trusses, on the inside of the tower.

Following the same principle as the structure of the shipyards, trusses are used for the structure of the tower.

De toren wordt opgebouwd volgens een gelijkaardig principe als de loodsen: uit vakwerken.

De horizontalen van het vakwerk liggen niet in hetzelfde vlak als het vakwerk zelf, maar erachter.

Een betonnen kern zorgt voor de horizontale stabiliteit.

De vloerplaten volgen niet de horizontalen van het vakwerk. Op de verticale kolommen van het vakwerk worden cellulaire liggers bevestigd. Op die manier is het mogelijk om vrij binnen het volume de niveau’s te kiezen.

VIRGOLO2015 I MASTER DISSERTATION

A hotel for hikers. On a unique location in Bolzano, Italy.

The site for the hotel lies on ‘Il Virgolo’, a rocky cliff at the bottom of the Pozza Mountain in Bol-zano, Italy. Bolzano is the largest city of South-Tyrol and welcomes a lot of hikers walking the GR/E5-route. This route makes it possible to cross the Alps from North to South in only 2 weeks time and is therefore very popular.

Because of the function of the hotel and the limited accessibility of the site, the decision was made to not allow cars. When walking the E5-route, hikers enter the city in the North, cross the old city center and than have 3 options (green lines) to reach the hotel. Two steep paths go up the cliff. The

third option is to take the cable car up the hill and than slowly walk down.

While approaching the hotel, the vegetation blocks all the views.

However, the views from the site are sensational.The concept for the hotel originates from these 4 different views;

a view over the old city center, a view to the mountains on the other side of the valley, a view to the sky and a view to the mountainside.

The walk does not end at the doorstep of the hotel...

Different volumes are carefully placed onto the site, following the topography of the plot.Instead of giving all the views away at once, the position of the volumes creates a sequence of views and an

interesting walk through the hotel.

When something goes wrong, I curse a littleand carry on.
