Policy Debate, a glimpseo This strategy-driven, competitive speech activity begins in May, when a year-long
topic is chosen to base the season’s debates around. Starting in the early summer, teams begin hours of intense, targeted research for gathering information to support affirmative and negative defenses of all relative points of view.
o At every tournament I must be prepared to debate both for and against any potential argument or point of persuasion. Arguments are delivered at a rapid fire delivery speed so that more points can be made, my ears trained to catch my opponents every word, while my mind focuses on formulating my own offensive responses in a very limited amount of time. The adrenaline rush I feel, as I stand up to deliver my counter-arguments, backed with truth and creativity, is unmatched.
o As the season progresses, I continue research as I become an unstoppable machine, prepared to debate any point of view, fully backed by evidence and my own strategic argumentative styles and choices. This game is like no other activity because it challenges your mind and beliefs to see further and research harder with every new argument you encounter.

100s of lbs of evidence gathered and organized over 100s of hours of research for about 100 debate rounds in a year.
Policy debate take place in a team format, two against two, and the winner is decided
by a judge who observes the round.

o For my communication studies capstone class, I was placed in a group where we received a client from James Madison University’s Environmental Stewardship Program, who was looking for us to create a campaign to reduce energy consumption among residence hall students. The three areas of energy reduction the campaign is to focus on were turning off lights, reducing hot water usage and keeping windows shut.
o This semester-long campaign began with conducting background research including trends in University movements towards greener habits, conducting student and faculty surveys and interviews, as well as evidentiary support for all of our tactical decisions, events and strategies.
o Over the course of the semester, we designed a unique campaign to get students on board for creating change which concluded with a final Powerpoint presentation to our class and clients to share our ideas and findings.

My group’s name was Evolve and I created our team logo seen below using InDesign.

To establish credibility for our campaign, the name E.C.O. was created as a student organization on campus. Below is our tagline which incorporates the E.C.O. logo which I designed.
