Company Profiles 2: Thom Browne Women’s RTW Pre A/W 2013/14

Thom Browne first made his name with the shrunken suit look of preppy styled short trousers and tight fitting narrow blazers for men. His bespoke tailoring business was started in 2001 and even by 2008 was still being commented on as “not a good look” (The Guardian Jeremy Langnead 2008 ) However, the look caught on and started influencing other designers and caught hold of the MadMen aesthetic of 1960’s Italian tailoring. He first designed for women in 2010 for Brooks Brothers diffusion line Black Fleece. The look was preppy again with the classic tailored smart look emphasised again. This was the start. He now has a full range of womens wear as part of the Thom Browne label. The colours are restricted to the company’s Red, white and blue (and grey!) for the Pre range for A/W 2012/13 and he uses tie silk for his dresses and coats and jackets. Michelle Obama wore A Thom Browne coat to the inauguration of President Obama on January 21st 2013.

The Dress

On investigation on close up images of the dress it became clear that the fullness of the skirt and inserts were part of a box pleat construction to the bodice and skirt. This gave extra fullness and the inserts increased this further. The bodice and skirt are separate and had been pieced together.

Altering the Blocks to produce the pattern

The contrast inserts were estimated at 2cm on show on the bodice and skirt – other measurements altered accordingly. The bodice blocks were altered by repositioning darts and splitting into 3 equal parts for construction of box pleats on final pattern. Were inserts were to be added at front and back centres the line was extended by a centimetre to make drafting easier
