This was the green go kart project which I was in-volved in with 2 high school freinds. I wanted to take an existing, already made, but poorly created go kart and make it fully functional. Someone had created a go kart with good ideas but there was room for im-provement. At first the go kart was pretty much a frame on wheels and it did not give much function-ality. It did have a steering system but upon testing they proved to be faulty. There was no seat, no bat-teries, or engine to move it, nor the brakes to stop it. So I thought this would be the perfect challenge for me to be able to push myself and really make this an extended project. The original concept for the car to be in motion was if it was “green” and by that I mean it had to be ecologically friendly, so instead of burn-ing fuel, I would use batteries and an electric motor to cause motion. And to go even further, interior com-fort could potentially be made of recycled fabrics.
What did creating this product mean to me? I’ve al-ways loved creating things and this project really challenged me because I never created something with this much complexion and I have never created a project of this bulk within a team.
The creation of this project expanded my knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in which research was needed to understand how certain as-pects of the vehicle could be enhanced. I went on to research how certain metals would behave under stress, heat, and got a lot of experience in welding, as I did not do it very often. The complexion of this product really engaged my mind into understanding the importance of practical and theoretical skills. Within this I greatly improved my time management skills and providing suitable solutions for different problems faced.
I also came to realise that during the manufacture of this product, how important the attention to detail is. If a small little thing is off, it could potentially be-come a drastic problem.

During my high school years, while I was creating my lounger project, one of the teachers asked if i could put together a house to stand in the background for the 3rd year children’s play. I put this house together in about 2 hours and they children decorated it from there on.

This was my first ever furniture design project. An outdoor sun lounger that doubled as a bench for multiple people to sit on. I created this project on my own in my final year of high school. The objective was to create something that would provide an area for students to socialise during their lunch periods. The lounger would sit in a woodland area on school campus for people to enjoy the scenery in peace, or with multpile friends as a bench. This project was the last thing I made at that high school. It may still be there to this day.

This was a necktie box that I made during my penultimate year of high school. It was designed as a luxury box to hold 6 neckties. I have kept this box ever since I first made it and currently holds a lot more than 6 neckties that I have obtained throughout the years.

During my high school years at the BSB, one assign-ment was to create any type of trophy. I decided to look around school for competitive sports that need-ed trophies to be won.
I found a lunch time chess club run by one of the mathematics teachers and asked if I could make a trophy for their upcoming team tournament. The teacher was delighted when I presented this as my assignment/trophy give away.

This was one of the first things I designed during my early years of university. The assignment was to create an infograph about anything. The rest speaks for itself.

The Climbmate pram project
This is a 3 wheel design for the "Climbmate" concept which designed by myself and 3 others. We developed a functioning prototype of a 3 wheel system designed to be attached to a modern day baby pram in order to help with moving up and down stairs without the need of assistance.
We had to prove that our 3 wheel system could work with an integrated motor to help the wheels traverse up steps. Therefore I decided to make a fully fuctional motor out of scraps to be fitted inside a wheel. I cre-ated a stand for the wheel to sit on and showed that when a battery is attached, the wheel would spin.

This was a concept project I created during my second year of university. It was a project I created on my own to help people with poor grip strength. The idea was to use a “Raspberry Pi” to control motors and sensors attached to a glove so that when someone tries to grab an object, the motors on the glove would increase the grip strength.
These are some images of a desk lamp created in SolidWorks. The 3 images represent cross sections and interior modules of the lamp. This was one of the many SolidWorks assignments I had to create during my studies.

For this assignment I had to design and create a suitcase with a plastic top, wooden base, and metal handle. This assignment was to test our prototyping capabilities at the university. Finger joints were used to attach the 4 sides of the base together with some PVA glue and a plywood base nailed to the bottom to create a box. The plastic top was made using a wooden mould to vaccum form the square shape. For the handle I took a stainless steel rod and created a knurled cross secional pattern on a lathe for increased grip. Then I bent the handle down and outwards to be attached to other metallic pieces to create the handle of the suitcase.

During my 3rd year of university I had to take 2 minors in tandem with my major. One of these was a collaboration with “VvAA” A dutch insur-ance company. The project was to create a system that would improve driving behaviour. They had technology that was able send driving behavioural information to an external source. We (myself and 2 other students) created a point system that used this technology which would reward users for good driv-ing. Good driving behavour resulted in coupons or discounts relative to how good you drove (the better you drove, the better the discounts).

Indoor aeroonic plant farming
The second minor I took in tandem with my major was called “Product Realisation”. In this project I worked with 3 others to create 3 concepts for an aeroponic design for urban indoor plant farming. this included a large amount of electronics on my behalf. In the end the final concept incorporated an injenction moulded modular design which used a “Raspberry Pi” to monitor water levels, temperature, and the ability to water plant roots.

Design strategy and methods
Wooden watch
During one of the minors, I created a visual process tree for a design strategy that I’ve been using since my high school days. I used it to help explain how I usually get from an assignment to a final product.
One year at University we got given a prototyping assignment to create a wooden watch. I decided to cre-ate the face out of mahogany for an elegant look to fit with the black clockwork of an existing watch. I used plywood for the links and a metal clip to join them. I also fitted the final product with a glass face to protect the clockwork.
How can we make greenhouses increase plant yield and use fewer resources doing so?
The needs:
1. GREENHOUSES DO NOT HAVE A GREEN SOURCE OF ENERGY TO HEAT CROPS
Biological activity slows as temperatures decrease. The cellular functions required for photosyn-thesis slow down as the air cools, thereby slowing growth. Addition-ally, cold air typically contains less moisture, which can result in water loss from leaf surfaces and also can cause portions of water inside of the plant to freeze.
3. Greenhouse users want a way to re-use and recycle rainwater
Research shows that although some farmers can catch rainwater, they may not necessarily use it because of space, or it’s simply not worth it. In 20 years, it might be worth it.
4. Greenhouse users want eco-friendly solutions
Eco-friendliness is currently a large driver for the consumer market.Outsourcing as an “Eco-friendly” company will ease the competition.
2. Greenhouse farmers would love an automated harvesting system
Automated harvesting has been seen on almost all outdoor fields, but is rarely ap-proved to be used inside a greenhouse.
During one of my university years I had to conduct a research project related to energy usage when green-house farming. This was the design brief I created for a future group to design a solution.

The gondola project
My final project at university has been my biggest project. I was to work alone for the company United Balloon, to improve an “alpha-stage” concept for a tourist attraction to be set up in 25 major cities around the world, starting in Dubai. Aspects of this project included; User interaction design, Struc-tural Engineering, Project planning, Ergonomics, Aethetics and Safety. The tourist attraction was called a gondola for the sake of this project as it was the most appropriate term. The gondola has been designed as part of the “Diamond of Dubai” experi-ence, which is a thrilling panoramic skyline viewing experience. This design for the gondola is to be finalized by the United Balloon Company.

Candle stand
My older brother decided he was going to raise a puppy. He was determined to buy a male German Shep-herd and call him Klaus. Therefore I decided to model and 3d print a dog tag as a gift. The tag was printed with a blend of plastic and aluminium to make it lightweight and give it a bit of sparkle. I thought it would be fitting to have the tag look like a tankard, used for drinking beer.
My stepmother started a candle making business and found a large market for her products. She asked me to create a stand for her to place her 200+ home made candles. This is a flatpack de-sign intended to be easily taken apart and put back together so she can use it at home and at markets. This is a project I am currently working on and I have only finished the design stage. I have yet to build the product.
