Hi! I’m Kevin Guyer. Somehow you’ve stumbled upon my pdf portfolio! That’s pretty cool. Excuse the dust while I get my mess of a website developed.

Anyways, here’s an abridged list of what I’ve been up to recently. My primary focus resides in Identity Design.

After we cruise through the formality of including a resume in a pdf portfolio, let’s take a look at some of the work I’ve produced in the past year.

Moholy-Nagy Exhibition Catalog & Poster

In this fictional exhibition collateral project, students were to research a historial photographer who inspires them, mimic their style and methodology, and develop a branded poster/exhibition catalog cover.

Laszlo Moholy-Nagy’s in-fluence on graphic design history has always been an inspiration to me, so I set out to capture line, light, and natural patterns in an urban environment.

Constitution Day Symposium 2017

I was approached by the humanistic studies dept. chair to create a branded poster and event program for the annual event, which is organized by MICA and the Maryland ACLU. This year’s topic was, “Is This What Democracy Looks Like?” Three panelists took the stage in MICA’s Falvey Hall to discuss important political issues pertinent to the current administration.

Over the course of the past year, the political climate has been a touchy subject. Racism, hypocricy, and intolerance have led to a great division in the United States. This formed the basis for the visuals of this project. Repeated in

the background lives an array of controversies faced over the past year, partially censored by dark blue bars. This design direction aims to mimic the actions of our current leadership by visually pushing the important matters of human rights into the background.

It was so fun to have the chance to attend the important event and see hundreds of people interacting with my design work. Even more surreal was watching attendees toss the booklet into the trash cans when leaving; That was the true marker of my first mass-produced design object.

Tranquil : Meditative Book

For this project, students were to choose a place that they visit frequently, and design a book that captures what it feels like to be present in the space.

I chose one of my all-time favorite places in Baltimore: Fort McHenry. Sitting by the water, listening to the waves lightly crash against the sea wall, the calming drone of the nearby cement factory... I feel relaxed just writing this. To start the project, I visited the park: I wrote everything I saw and heard, and made an attempt to write poetry based on what it felt like to be there.

The book evolved to weave my captured images with typographic poetry. A full text is available on Medium at https://goo.gl/7Zaotv.

Poetry is directly integrated into my images.

The narrow colums of text support the images by allowing them to be the star.

Baltimore Art Rising Visual Poetry Book

Baltimore Art Rising is a collaboration between MICA’s Graphic Design department and Dew More Baltimore. D.M.B. is a community-based organization dedicated to using art as a tool to address apathy in marginalized groups. Students in the design dept. created visual, typographic interpretations of the poetry that was writen by Baltimore City middle & high schoolers.

To bring all of the vibrant stories and interpretations together, I created a book to encompass the emotion and creativity that went into them. Throughout the book, many expressive exclamations hand-picked from the poetry are held together by a cohesive visual system intended to give the content the justice it rightfully deserves.

Pumpkins on the Green Event Invitation

Front of Invitation, with pumpkin-shaped die cut

Pumpkins on the Green is an invitation set for Irvine Nature Center’s yearly event of food, fun, and fundraising. I worked with Jenny Hoffman, art director at Ashton Design, to create a cohesive set of invites for the party. The pri-mary invitation card makes use of a sophisticated die-cut to stimulate curiosity in the viewer, where at first, they only see a kiss of color in a sea of rich, dark spruce green. Once they open the card, a controlled explosion of color greets them with all of the necessary information they need to know about attending the event.

Along with the big invitation, attendees also received a small postcard, save the date, and RSVP mailer.

Colony Collapse Disorder Motion Graphic Colony Collapse Disorder is

a short motion graphic doc-umentary about the decline of global bee populations. A static PDF is not the best viewing experience for a motion graphic... so I highly recommend that you watch it on youtube here!

After taking a class on the importance of pollinators, I knew that I had to create a reactionary piece to spread the word. There is a lot more to the story than what is included in the video—but the most pertinent points to consider have been covered.

Working with professor/art director Lindsay Ballant, I made a storyboard to keep the animation fast-paced and informative. From there, I created a set of cohesive illustrations to act as the

primary communicators—the only text is the title, seen in the first few seconds. My goal for the animation was to accurately communicate even if you watch the video without my narraration! That’s up to you to decide if I was successful, though.

I had so much fun learning After Effects to create this video, and it remains as one of my favorite things I’ve ever made. Generating meaningful transitions between scenes and ideas was a challenge but overall very fun and led to a good amount of learning!
