ABOUT ME
As a kid i never had much of an idea of what life had in store for me. Or what i had in store for myself, for that matter. Not until after finishing highschool, I realised this had result-ed in me being rather lazy. I decided to turn this around, and as I did, I soon found my passion very close to home. My dad, being an architect, showed me that creating things from scratch, from an idea, can be the most fulfilling thing I can do in this life. Designing something worth pre-serving was my new goal in life. Soon this led me to one of the best decisions I have made so far: studying Spatial Design at the University of the Arts in Utrecht. This school has helped me find my way in the designworld, which I am so eager to learn more about every day.I am applying for an internship. With this portfolio I’m hoping to give you a good im-pression of my work so far. I would be hon-ored if I could explain my thoughts about the projects in person. 5

What happens when you design with a key word? How much depends on this word?Organism studios is a young animation studio from Utrecht and they were looking for a new workspace. They found a houseboat with enough space for the demands. Which includes a music studio and an editing room.

‘‘Ideas come from the outside, creation comes from the inside’’
Animation is a form of creation, bring-ing something to life. I created a central area of light where the creation starts, the meeting room. The editing room and studio are concealed. Ideas come from the outside, creation comes from the inside.

BAAN 74 ROTTERDAM
This office building from the seventies was in need of a new program. Something with a strong image. With the renaissance of the crafts, I decid-ed to create a centre for craftsmanship. This would be the first of it’s kind.The exterior had to echo the contents of the building. Wooden panels marked with the occupants logo, would create a dy-namic image on the outside.

By slicing the building open, I created a light source for the entire building. This solution creates a common space in the center. This gives the building an open feeling and promotes collaborations between the crafts.

By giving the building a blinds-like exterior, I created an organic shell which has two functions; Showing the logos when closed and opening up the view when opened.

DE HEF
Twenty years ago, Europe’s first lift bridge retired. Since then it has been functioning as an icon. But now that’s not enough to cover the costs. What can be done with such a landmark?By developing apartments on the bridge, I found a way to keep the bridge out of the hands of tourists and to maintain the mysterious atmosphere. But how do you build something on top of a bridge with-out destroying the landmark?

To maintain the mysterious atmosphere and to prevent the brigde from becoming the next Eiffel Tower, I decided to develop 15 apartments on top of the bridge.The design derived from a bookshelf. A bookshelf contains different books from different authors. So my apartments would be designed by different architects from Rotterdam. De Hef would represent the architectual writers of Rotterdam.

The counterweights will be hollowed out. They will function as a lift.

The flanks will be protected from the outside by large metal doors, to keep the peace within. The doors will slide across the existing rails. These rails also seperate the paths and the grass. The shared gardens will make for an interesting scene, with a rhythm of shadows, which are being created by the bridge.

HEMBRUG TERREINWith a team of four students, we made a plan for an old ammunition plant in Zaandam.We created an overall concept and then each of us designed a dif-ferent aspect of the plan. I person-ally chose a cluster of buildings that I wanted to open up.

This project started as our own initiative. I found Hembrug when I was searching for a re-use project. With a group of four, we analysed the plant. After that we came up with an overall concept. Each of us designed a different aspect of the plant, keeping this concept in mind. This way we designed everything from interior to urban space. I chose architecture, but ended up doing urban as well.I started out with formstudies. The ground was heavily polluted, so I decid-ed to dig out the fundations. This way I created a space under the existing buildings. This was also a great way to open up the dense structures.

The building I chose, building 112, is nick-named the Cathedral. It’s an immense space, which should be left as it is. I decided to do it some justice by removing parts from the building in front, building 407.112 lies in the middle of the terrain, so it will function as a meeting place, just as the churches of old.

To open up the view of the Cathedral, I took out the mass of the building in front.The outline is kept standing, as well as the roof structure and the staircase, for these elements define the building.

MEETING ROOMThe city of Utrecht is in need of a new meeting room to welcome foreign political guests. A good first impres-sion of the city is very important.By using the rich history of Utrecht, I managed to cre-ate a symbiosis between the orig-inal buildings and the meeting room.

By taking out a piece of the bridge, I give the buidling room to breath. The first two stories are also removed, to give the building some height and impor-tance.

TThe lift is accessible from the basement only. This is where the entrance to the meeting room is located.That’s why I integrated the existing build-ing into the design. The levels of the meet-ing room are defined by the heights of the existing rooftops. The meeting room has a churchlike height, to emphasize the impor-tance.

By carving out the square, I created a dynamic urban space, which relates to the water. The meeting room has it’s own entrance, which is easy to recognise.

‘‘Adaptive reuse is the future’’. In this ecological era, we have to con-serve what we have. But we don’t have
to be gentle about it.I like to see myself being involved with these kinds of projects; a classic build-ing, brought back to life with something new, something refreshing, something contrasting.Classic and vintage design have always fascinated me; It has character, it tells a story. But instead of copying this, I would like to use it as a foundation for my own design.
