What: Architect, Urban designer and planner, DreamerWhen: From now on.Where: The possibilities are endless. How: Collaboration, Education, Experience, Inspiration, Intuition

    Why Everything is architecture

Hello, my name is Marjan Sarab. I graduated from university of art in Tehran, Iran, in June 2010 after receiving my bachelors in urban design and planning. In September 2010, I got admitted in university of Eindhoven in architecture and 2 years after, in August 2012 I received my master in architecture.

I grow up in metropolitan, with approximately 12 million inhabitants. Since childhood I have been an active artist, curious learner, an

intensive worker and a performer. I have always had a unexplainable strong interest in art, mathematics, the way people live and storytelling, so I was naturally directed down to urban design and architecture path.

My experience has helped me to fi nd my main interest, but most importantly they gave me the opportunity to work in a team both as a leader or otherwise be cooperative, and I realized how to centralize group efforts to reach a better result as a team.

I believe that design is a

full-circle, collaborative process that should involve multiple discipline. Furthermore, I believe in making goals and working hard to complete those goals, the importance of an unbreakable system of family and friends, and that a good (or bad) joke can fi x just about anything.

Computers are nowadays dominating the architectural fi eld, but I will always value the natural fl uidity modeling, and full-scaling mock-ups.My passion for architecture and design continues to grow everyday as I see this as not only a professional choice, but a way of life.

    Why

The dike relocation in Lent will result in a 200 meter wide secondary channel with left and right of the bridge an island Veur Lent and between the Waal Bridge and the railway bridge an island. At low tide, these two islands are connected. Veur Lent is incremented for buildings while between the new city bridge crossing the railway bridge and an island serving festivities is realized. From 2014 - when the secondary channel is completed - these islands shaped. The whole has a length of 1600 meters. Between these redesigned headland and the historic town lies the Waal with a width of 300 meters. The doubling of the Waal and the development of the city is the largest island national project

in the framework of Space for the river. Around 2025, the entire project was completed Nijmegen.

The purpose of the contest Design a city island is a contribution to the debate on the content and design of the new shape island. It aims to creativity designers and administrators around these themes to excite. The results are enablers in an urban debate involving the interested Nijmegen may be involved.

The ideas competition seeks innovative Design a city island (!) Views on the subject to generate. The ACN expects the contributors themselves with these conceptual principles and programmatic demands come. For the submission of innovative approaches to

design and programming of this promontory promotion defi nes the ACN emphatically no fi xed criteria and participants do not need to take into account previously developed visions. For participants who do need to inform the ACN provides a spatial planning map dike relocation (Annex 2) and a quality plan of the municipality of Nijmegen for the site (Appendix 3).

    Why

In the center of Cologne, lies Heumarkt, a square with a richhistory. Between Heumarkt and Rhine, Maritime Hotel is located.

In the current situation there is a tension between traffi c, Heumarkt, hotel and promenade. Heumarkt is no longer a complete square, function of promenade is lost, traffi c does not create an appealing urban environment, Maritime Hotel represents a huge scale in its context which currently is not fi tting.

The proposal is to convert the no mans land that currently is an island to a new way of active and public life. This happens not through outlining each of them, in reverse to

expand the public activities to the city, creating a blurred transformation from urbanity to architecture and landscape.

The hotel, roads, metro and river will allow the site for a multi programming, hybrid activities and most importantly increased interaction between people and programs. A multi functional building which combines public and private, visitor and residents, commercial and culture function is a single location in heart of cologne.

Shops, restaurant, cultural events on the fi rst levels of hotel bonded with to Rhine River from of one side and the other side a public plaza and connection between metro station, hotel and parking. Hotel rooms will be on the higher levels and

everything is expending out to the roof garden and outdoor traces for everybody. Like a contemporary interpretation of the archway or passage, the hotel forms a generous cover for the public life beneath and creates a diverse experience when moving in or around the building.

The building is an urban space, rather than a building, and willBe bold and well-adjusted, unique and local at the same time.

But most importantly building generates life around and within it, as life in city evolves so will the Maritim hotel. Maritim Hotel will be a gate and a point of reference for the city. What isa gate, but a signifi cant point you pass?

Since the main functions there are a supermarket and a food museum, it has been decided to use all the elements in the site to turn it to a Food Campus.

The meaning of food is an exploration of culture through food. What we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it, whos at the table and who eats fi rst is a form of communication that is rich with meaning.

This site along the Canal of Helmond wants to attract people and bring them closer with one common interest: Food. And use this opportunity to teach them everything about food and be a rural area in middle of the city.

One can choose to buy ingredients from supermarket or the market of urban agricultural land, go to food museum, learn how to cook or actually study cooking to become a chef, plant vegetable, or go to a slow food restaurant on the roof top. The lost industry can turn to a new and active one. The combination of functions would be urban agriculture, reuse water tower for irrigation, food market, food museum, slow food restaurant and cooking academy.

    Why

The project is about reusing the industrial canal in city of Helmond that soon will run out of business. After the site visit, the way of movement stroked me. It was a contradiction to what a canal and waterfront should be... A leisure and natural site which is pleasant to walk along.By mapping the movements rage, the areas for redesigning became into attention which the master plan was its result. The most urgent location was chosen to be design. The location is the end point of the route.

    Why

Starters on the housing market are in general young and ambitious, but fi nancially rather weak. The crucial theme of housing design for this target group therefore is scarcity. They cant have it all.Nonetheless residential projects for starters show a huge variety in their appearance. The main goal of the seminar was to investigate how architects deal with

the complicated puzzle of preferences and priorities among all those parameters that in the end add up to the all-in construction costs. Eighteen projects have been chosen to illustrate the links between the mix of decisions, requirements and approaches, and the variety in the resulting designs. In order to visualize such a complex overview a set of logos and pictograms has been developed facilitating the comparison of otherwise verydistinctive projects, each showing their specifi c mix of

unique selling points. The results were presented in a leafl et-like layout per project referring to the compact visual culture of realestate agencies.Eighteen projects are hardly enough to get a complete or even an appropriate perspective on starters housing. More elaborate research is recommended, but this makes a wonderful starting point.

    Explanation Exhibition

A starter is a person who is entering the market, in housing for sale, for the fi rst time. For a house to be known as interesting for starters, it will have to meet with certain requirements. Sometimes the municipality will label houses in this category, so they will get more grip on spreading diff erent layers of people over certain areas. But normally it will all depend on which characteristics will fi t best to an individual person who is willing to buy a fi rst house.

Price, square meters, volume, sustainability, collective space, parking, location, distance to the centre, having your own garden, etc. These characteristics have all been categorized by diff erent logos. Depending on the size and accent of the logos it will be clear what the most important element in each project is. The colored lines on each table will show the price per m2 proportion what you see, is what you get!. Starting with blue as the cheapest price per m2 it will end with red as the most expensive price. But dont just judge by this proportion while every project will have its own special element, where other starters would love to pay for.

Be free to admire the models and read the descriptions, so hopefully you will fi nd the elements which will be most important for yourself. Remember, there wont be just one ultimate starter project, because we discovered there is always someone willing to pay more for a smaller space because of another special value he or she will fi nd interesting.

    Renovating a Unit

Who: Marjan SarabWhat: Renovating a apartment interior for a clientWhen: Fall 2011 - 1 monthWhere: Tehran, IranHow: AutoCAD, Sketchup

    Why

Almost close to the end of 2011, I got a call from my cousin.

She just have bought a house but she does not like the distribution of rooms in her small apartment.

The fact that bedroom and kitchen has the most light

and living room less light, was bothering her a lot.

Base on her request, I made a new plan for her apartment which match what she want.

The solution were simple and easy: First corridor to have more privacy in living room and kitchen. And corridor distribute all the rooms. The bedroom has

no window base on her request since she would only use it at nights for sleeping and not having light would not bother her. Also the air conditioner will solve the ventilation in her room.

The kitchen and living room have the most light and windows. And it is connected to balcony.

Who: Marjan SarabWhat: Green Architecture Competition - Concepts and StrategiesWhen: Winter 2011 - 1 WeekWhere: Any whereHow: Hand sketching, InDesign, Photoshop

    Why

The territories of the cities are over loaded. As it has been said in the competition itself extreme land uses in urban make it impossible to develop green spaces in low costs. The solutions such as green roofs and green facades seem like a good plan although they are not open to public. Also growing towards the villages and open space, is not a good option anymore. So the question is why change when we can adopt? If the purpose of a green development is to bring back the biodiversity that have been lost through the human actions, the perfect location would be empty abounded space inside/edge or outside of the cities. In landscape and urban landscape, there are buildings (usually big scale) which have been abounded; such as offi ces, hotels, industrial buildings and etc. These buildings would cost any municipalities a large amount of money to destroy or renovate it for a new function. So the result is some human leftovers with no use, empty, waste spaces and sometimes dangerous and pretty noticeable. When these buildings are located outside of the cities, in a normal situation, the nature will claim them and take over them. Nature has the

power to take over man-made architecture; slowly. What if, we start the same process and this time by help of our technologies speed it up and make a pure and wild green development with species that can produce products for industries such as medicine, food and simply add quality to city, its surrounding and our landscapes as a source of oxygen and beauty. No one can deny the need of land within the cities in the urbanism century. Whether we want or not, our cities need to develop horizontally or vertically which both have disadvantages. If a city is trying to grow towards the green spaces outside of the city, we can also do the other way around. Let the nature grow into the city in its pure and wild look. The whole world can look like a big city and at the same time a big jungle.By this solution we can have:- Sustainable use of empty facilities,- Public Green Space,- Attraction for some functions that can use the space such as schools,- A break through from the routine,- A force to make new occupiers use the green space later on.

The intention of this proposal is actually make a concept of a harsh vs. harsh; man-made

vs. nature. The infl uence of this method in the future would be revealed in designing of each building. It is a next step to green architecture to think in designing process with the consideration how nature can take over it and how it should look like; whether if it is abounded or occupied. In this way we will grow our own jungle in the city. Next generation of architects will be educated by such rule to consider an organic or designed green space. The Green Architecture will start to grow with the buildings themselves. No matter of function or type of architecture, they will adopt to accept green in designs. Soon will be no concern about green spaces since the green and city grow together. So in the opinion of the writer, green developments, should become wild and pure as an impression of Relief of nature from the core of city and architectural elements.Relief as alleviation, ease or deliverance through the removal of pain or stress. Relief as money, food or other help given to cities in poverty or need of Green.Relief as something affording a pleasing change, as from monotony.

This is a revolution of Architectural Perfection and Nature Adaptation.

    Why

On November 2011, Elir workshop occurred in university of Eindhoven. It was an international workshop for two weeks.

Participating Universities were included:Universitadegli Studi di Firenze,Facoltadi Ingegneria, ItalyGazi University Ankara, TurkeyLusofona University of Humanity and Technology Lisbon, Portugal Hafen City Universitt Hamburg, GermanyZachodniopomorski Uniwersytet Technologiczny Wszczecinie, PolandUniversity of Technology Tampere, FinlandUniversitt Innsbruck, AustriaAssociated UniversitiesUniversity of Oregon, USA

In this workshop, every student would be in random group with a random teacher from different universities.

The workshop was about industrial waterfronts in Netherlands and reusing them in a sustainable way.

After my design for industrial canal, I was really interested to work on another similar project. So I applied for that and I was one of the lucky 5 students from Eindhoven to be attending the workshop.

Communication and leading were a important factors in the workshop.

Amazingly, I end up in the group for Helmond! The exact city I worked before.

The experience of the design was highly interesting fro me. I

worked on the same site form 5 month but now I should have forgot every piece of my design and start from zero and come up with a new design strategy.

Nevertheless, I got to work with brick. I visited a brick factory and build my own brick and later that week, we had a group challenge to design and build a brick arc with 200 brick in 4 hours. At the end of the challenge we would put weight on the arc and a bicycle should cycle under it.

The result was surprising even for me! Just a complication for my previous design.

The experience was also highly valuable for me , since I automatically became a leader and presenter of the group.

AIHWho: Marjan SarabWhat: An ideal homeWhen: Fall 2010 - 2 weeksWhere: Tehran, IranHow: Model, Sketchup, Illustrator, Photoshop

    AnIdealHome

    Why

An ideal home was a challenge to design a home for a collective group with using element of water.

Clients are students. Therefore, creating a place to encourage the group activities is one of the key elements. Making community Garden and a square helps this approach, while the small units have their own private garden too.

The complex consisted of 10 units which from 1 to 2 people can live there. Each have a small garden a parking. The units are different in square meters which makes it fl exible for different people.

The roof on top of the complex and water is the main element for circulation of water since In Tehran, there are a lot of hot days.

MAMAC to CIACWho: Marjan SarabWhat: Extension to a MuseumWhen: Fall 2010 - 5 MonthsWhere: Liege, BelgiumHow: Model, Sketchup, Illustrator, Photoshop, AutoCADWhy

MAMAC Museum (museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts) is located in Liege, Belgium. The museum has a changing and a permanent collection, but due to the restrictions in size of the building, the permanent collection can never be shown.

Therefore an extension is needed. However, this

extension does not need to only extend the size of the museum; it must also improve the international status of the museum. The museum has expressed ambitions to enlarge its international infl uence, starting with its name, Centre International dArt et de Culture; CIAC.

The design tries to make a bond between the building

and natural surrounding. It is a tree house, giving another dimension to the park.Main characteristics of the extension are as following:- Sequences of the spaces- Possibility for other activities such as music concert, performance and - Established together in urban environment- Views and perspectives

    Why

The Zollverein School of Design, built by SANAA in Essen, Germany, is striking by the design of the windows.

It was a question for me to see how a window can be situated in concrete without the frame being visible.

In result, a research was made to understand how the detail of the window should be by studying only pictures of construction.

The research, ended up to build the actual detail in the scale of 1:1.

The picture here, shows the model, from section of window, and the fl oor and false fl ooring.

    Why

TEC, Electronic and Computer Trade Center, is a sustainable and suffi cient solution for a electrical center.

This project was a competition entry from my home town that works with solar energy.

A whole facade is removed and replace by roof which is entirely made from solar panels. Since 90% days in Tehran are sunny, the building becomes energy free from any other source.

Inside has been design as a landscape. Routes going down and up between trees, creating a air circulation and different perspectives.

The building contain functions such as: Sale and distribution spaces, Lab,Book and magazine shop,Resting area,Security,Cafe,

The rest of the space, which is the major of the space, is occupied with circulation and gardens.

In Tehran, properties are very important.

Each public or private land is surrounded by walls and entrance.

This makes it crucial to design entrances for public spaces.

The following project is about redesigning the entrance for Apadana Hospital.

The entrance simply is illustrating the building it self and offering physical boundary but it is visually not a boundary.

Cultural RingWho: Marjan SarabWhat: When: Winter 2010 - 9 MonthsWhere: Tehran, IranHow: Research, Analysis, Hand Sketching, Sketchup, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Power Point

    Why

Watching a city, even though the scenery be nothing spectacular, can be pleasant. City is a big building growing towards the sky, only it has a higher scale and it would only in time will gain its shape and scenery. In each moment, more than a eye can seen, or ear can hear, there are happening. There is nothing in the city which does not have a relation with it surrounding, memory and events.

At this moment, there are rarely perfect cities. But there are part which are pleasant.

Many people, living in Tehran, think of their city as a ugly city which is too crowded, dense and not divers; but they have forgot the balance between the spaces.

They feel there are not enough sceneries and diversity for their steady life.

In this sense, it is necessary to create a ring in Tehran which is rich in meaning and culture and contains diversity. The routing also should be close to main streams to create a good accessibility.

Nevertheless, there are rarely walking routes in Tehran because of the dominance of cars.

This design is about a routing with connection to Valiasr Street and Tajrish Square to improve the spacial organization of the district.

In my opinion the historical and cultural values in the chosen district has been forgotten by habitants and governments.

The design started with research, recognition, analysis, master plan and small scale design.

The focus of the design is:- A landmark routing- Sequences of landmarks- Balance, freedom, mobility, option- Pedestrian- Natural elements - Needs of users

    Parks

    Why

The projects are about designing parks with different criterias only using mind and hand.

All are neighborhood parks but with different clients. All are different but at the same time follow a certain design elements to make them a complex. The design is to be adjusted for different parks in one small city.

The fi rst one is a neighborhood with more elderly. In result the park doesnt change height. It is easy to fi nd you route and it has sitting areas with shadows.

The second one, is a children neighborhood park. Therefore, design become more playful.

The third one, is for young adults. The design is still playful but also more quiet with facilities such as book shop.

    Entrances

Who: Marjan SarabWhat: Design various entrancesWhen: 2007Where: Various locationsHow: Hand sketching

    Why

The projects are about designing entrance with different criterias only using mind and hand.

The fi rst one, Eram Garden Entrance is about an entrance for a monumental palace and its garden.

Here the initial of the original design for the garden and palace has been implanted in the entrance in a contemporary way.

Using natural elements in order to make a continues connection between entrance-garden-palace is necessary. Nevertheless water and green are a traditional element in Iranian architecture.

Bringing different rhythms in movements is the design basis such as creating curiosity, perspective and pause places.

The second one, is a entrance to a mosque (not a specifi c one).

Water along the route trying to

make the soul pure to enter the mosque.

Also the entrance being inside walls make it a quite space.Third entrance, is about an entrance to a housing complex.

Being organic and its connection to street and its happening is important element here.

Also bring various patterns and design to break through the routines is the basis of design.
