San Mateo Inxtatan sits high in the Cuchumatanes as a result the community has little in the way of modern conveniences. The repercussions of this remote city lies appar-
ent in the lack of access to potable water, electricity, and education. It is within the scope of this project to assess areas of concern and implement
systematic improvements that will improve quality of life while providing educational opportunities that may help lead this culturally and
historically important into a brighter and safer future.
San Mateo Inxtatan/ Parque Yol K’u
Camino Cassiopeia is a literal translation of the constellation which played a role in Mayan astrology. By integrating the idea of viewing nodes where the stars connect and working with the steep grade of the site a beautiful path way under the stars allows locals and visitors multiple portals into the heavens and daytime panoramic views into the mountain valley.
Concept
The Orbit Portal is designed to tap into the cyclical nature of the Mayan Calender. The connections to astrological events is celebrated by this ter-raced plinth seating and v`iewing area. Three stone seats are strategically laid out around the circumference facing North west, North East, and South west these alignments are to give the park user different places to sit and face into the heavens and reconnect with the history of a civilization that based its society on astrological alignments.
Concept
Venus ‘The Great Star’ in Mayan culture holds a significant tie to the counting of cycles and there calender system. The heliacal cycle of Venus was watched and calculated out to be understood as a 584 day cycle. The Mayans would use these cycles to regulate the way their society functioned. The Portal is a literal trans-lation of the stars allignment in the nights sky when Venus reaches it zenith. By connecting significant heav-enly bodies the platform and support structures where created to provide a view shed directly towards the Great Star.
