The Gyro is a two wheeled gyroscopically stabilized electric vehicle designed for the year 2028. The driver operates the vehicle with joy-sticks located in the front. It is equipped with the latest technology including internet, GPS and Bluetooth, all which can be controlled by touch screen or voice command technology. In the Gyro, a person can be connected to the world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Gyro is capable of both horizontal and vertical performance. This capability was created to accommodate transitions between urban and suburban or rural lifestyles. In the more confined spaces of the city, due to traffic and limited parking space, the Gyro is best used in the verti-cal position. When the driver leaves the city to more relaxed and open spaces, the horizontal position is ideal. To further enjoy open spaces, the Gyro includes a bike rack storage component that is capable of transporting two bicycles.

The canopy of the Gyro utilizes intelligent glass technology. This glass can be programmed to function automatically or manually. In the auto-matic setting the glass gradually darkens to give the driver the optimal view in any type of weather and any time of day. If operated manually, the driver controls the amount of light and outsider visibility.

The 2008 Car Design News Contest is to design a car for these Millenniumites and the way they use their cars as described here.

Millenniumites - people born around the year 2000 - lead international lives, have “green” values embedded in the way they think, expect to be able to always connect to the virtual world, and inhabit a non-stop 24/7 real world where-ever they are. Each of our Millenniumites - Qing Sun, Luana and Sanjay - need a new car that must be compact, seat at least two, provide a private space to communicate in, feel secure on congested streets, and assert their status as independent, trend leading and “green” minded young professionals.

Shanghai, China. 08:19 Monday 17th January 2028Qing Sun is getting ready for the day in her new studio apartment. She checks her air plants, makes a cappuccino-only break-fast (a legacy from her Parisian student days) and takes it with her in the car. As soon as she’s in, she calls her mother in San Francisco - it’s the only time she can catch up with her. On some days though, she gives a fellow member of the “Rickshaw Club” a ride to help her reduce her congestion charge. Whilst she wants to do this, in her car she always feels obliged to chat to this stranger because they sit right beside her - she wished there was a way she could be more separated from them on her forty minute commute.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 21.19 Sunday 16th January 2028Luana is setting off home after an evening out with her members of her Reiki class. She peers at her face in the mirror and touches her temple implant that is just connecting to the car systems. Gunning the car away from the park-house, her trans-mitted messages fade almost immediately they load onto the dashboard membrane as the carbon-meter becomes more prominent. Thinking of her offset account, which neutralises her energy use as part of her “no footprint” lifestyle, she decides not to play ‘city race’ - where nearby people in their cars compete to make the fastest across-a-zone journey. If only her car was lighter so that it would produce less carbon dioxide whilst going a bit quicker.

New Delhi, India Monday 05.51 17th January 2028Sanjay uses his PDA to temporarily turn off the digital advertisement for an up-market, British-style fish & chip restaurant that his car is showing this week. It might be a bit cheeky having this ad on while he is parked outside of the 24 hour sushi-burger bistro where he and a colleague are eating. After years in America he misses having more road space and wished cars were easier to see out of without the insecure feeling of being very visible to other road users. Sanjay leans back to grab his bag and catches a whiff of his household recycle box, which reminds him that he has to drop it off before he picks up his Dad and puts their two mountain bikes on the back of the car for their ride after his night at work.

Tryciclon is a three-wheeled vehicle developed for downhill (extreme sport) providing an advanced ability to cross most surfaces while using a full range of body movements. Combining the technology of both a bicycle and a skateboard, the Tri-cyclon has the capacity for traveling on any sur face that a bicycle can, while the rider utilizes a full range of body movements, similar to that of skateboarding. This combination allows for extreme rides, with greater control.The most innovative aspect of the tryciclon is the pivoting point be-tween the frame and the back wheels keeping the stability and allow-ing for optimal control.

Dr. Lud is a stress reliever figure created for office environments that can be used individually and also as part of a group game. The concept of this is to reduce stress and encourage relaxation. Dr. Lud is made of flexible anti-stress foam and an interior wire structure that allows for dif-ferent positioning. The extremities of the Dr. Lud are made from different colored plastic pieces that allow for connecting one Dr. Lud to another. A separate component can be used with the Dr. Lud figures to foster teamwork and fun among co-workers. This component is a wheel of colors that corresponds with the different colors of individual Dr. Luds. Players take turns pushing the center of the color wheel which causes one color on the wheel to light up. The player then attaches their Dr. Lud to another player’s with the corresponding color. Players continue taking turns and attaching the Dr. Luds together. This activity offers a chance for positive office interactions, thereby reducing high levels of stress in this environment.Usually toys are not associated with the office environment, and that is the idea. This unique figure incorporates a rare opportunity for fun and collaboration during work breaks.

This unit was designed for under developed areas with minimum re-sources to simplify and improve procedures in the blood donation sequence. The benefits of the design positively affect both the experi -ence of the patient and the job of the nurse. The donor chair gently tilts forward to keep the patient at ease, while aiding in the donation pro-cess. While similar medical equipment can be cumbersome and difficult to transport, the use of pivot points in the donor unit allows for the user to fold it up reducing space consumption and making transportation simple.

This is the solution to dilemmas in flatware cleaning, storage and main-tenance. The magnetic curve dryer and curve flatware were designed specifically for those who hand-wash and air-dry flatware. The vertical base is space efficient with a fun shape as opposed to existing dry-ing racks that tend to take up a lot of space and look unattractive. The magnets in the curve flatware and base allow for hanging the pieces face down, making them easy to recognize and access. The ergonomic contours of the flatware pieces are designed to fit comfortably in the hand and aid in easy movement and use.

Reisei is a personal home stress reliever designed to operate in small modern home spaces. Containing a light projector on one side, a track ball to rotate and modify the light color and two secondary buttons to increase or decrease the intensity of the light, the Resei can be used in any shadowy space to bring about feelings of calm and tranquility. Reisei can be programmed to store previous sessions. The base stand re-charges the device.
