This project has pushed my skills beyond simply designing to a brief for a specific site. By defining a unique take on dwelling we were encouraged to take on a complex adaptive systems approach to complete the project. This required a huge amount of large scale analysis and the scripting

of a system that analysed this data to develop a mapping system for the project to be based upon.

By striving to allow for the inhabitants to escape from the mundane we pitch into the space

available above and around the site.

This is all informed by our scripted dwelling mapper a script that assesses sunlight hours, proximity and noisy spaces to try and find the optimal space for dwelling to be inserted.

STUDIO_Galapagos 2015

Studying architecture on the Galapagos Islands sounds quite strange, its a place associated with flora and fauna, not buildings.

Most people myself included up until this trip, think of the Islands as human free, untouched, a pocket of the world home to a huge variety of flora and fauna and not much else, famous due to the renowned Charles Darwin.

The trip debunked all of my preconceived ideas and truly opened my eyes to the current situation. Heavily influenced by the political climate, the rule of the Ecuadorian Government, the Galapagos Islands are home to more than 25, 000 permanent residents.

These people are spread between the three main Islands. The settlement on Santa Cruz Island is the largest home to 10,000 of the residents.

We were lucky enough to visit all of the islands. Participating in everyday life there and experiencing first hand the climate, issues and resulting problems.

Working together with Ecuadorian and Mexican students we compiled a project by the completion of the 4 week study trip that tackled the problems that we had learnt of. Our proposal suggested a series of small scale interventions

to promote change and self sufficiency for the Galapaguenos.

The images above depicted what we hoped would motivate all into action - if not the beautiful turquoise waters might look something more like this image above all murky and polluted choking with plastics. It was and amazing trip one that has further inspired me to continue to develop a design approach that tries to tackle some of

these large problems even if that be by doing small things.

The whole trip evidenced to me the power of working together. It showed me a lot of things that I had learnt about in relation to community development and showed the beginning of a sense of ownership being forged. At the risk of sounding horrendously corny, I honestly had an overwhelming sense of pleasure being able to be

a part of such a fantastic experience. No wonder I became known as Hamamas Kat (happy Kat) I sincerely struggled not to smile. Being a part of the community, teaching what little I knew, facilitating possibly a little more, was mind blowing. It is communities like these that we can learn from. Sure I have my rose coloured glasses

on, I’m still basking in the heat of the Suanum sun while watching the waves crash onto the beach. But that’s all part of it, part of the charm, maybe part of the magic, part of why it needs to be encouraged and instigated elsewhere.

Incited by the expanding population, the discovery of ‘new ground’ is an increasingly important endeavour. This project was focussed on suggesting new ways to interpret ground in the CBD. Melbourne has grown rapidly in the past decade, and by 2051 it is estimated that the city’s population could increase to a figure of 7.7 million. This growth will require around 1.6 million

additional dwellings. It is clear that we will need more ground.

Ground is more than the plane that we traverse everyday. It permeates the city, highly influenced by context and program. Its ability to meld in with its surroundings often renders it almost imperceptible. Ground is currently somewhat restrained occupying the spaces outside of and in-between buildings. the grid system of the

CBD suppressing the very nature of ground. These characteristics allowed me to suggest that ground be pushed into new planes, into gaps and voids that CAN BE found all over the CBD. By observing a sequence of parameters that further spatially define the accommodating space, ground can be drawn up into new sites all over the cbd.

The 2014 Bower Studio extended well beyond any other subject I had ever taken. Pushed to understand complex building techniques alongside a vast breadth of social and cultural information, the subject has been a huge undertaking.

The learning involved in preparing for the trip and

the analysis of our encounters while up there was documented in a booklet and final project. The body of work culminated in a design that I sought to develop to respond to an issue that I became greatly inspired by and interested in, once in Titjikala.

I forged a strong connection with the kids in

Titjikala it became the primary area I chose to focus my design on when we arrived back home to Melbourne.

Culturally, physically and socially it was an eye opening trip, at times confronting and conversely heart-warming too, a trip I am very grateful to have been a part of, one I will not forget.

Employment from January 2013 to November 2015 with H2o architects in Collingwood.

With H2o I worked on a range of projects from commencement to completion over the past year. Due to the small number of staff employed by the firm I was able to participate in a range of jobs, assisting in all phases from completing submissions, to liaising with council and university clients, researching and drawing up concept designs, documenting projects in the

construction documentation phase and assisting with contract administration.

Over the past four years my confidence, excitement and interest in architecture has grown exponentially. I had always wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to learn continuously and complete a variety of different tasks in a day. Studying a major in architecture in the Bachelor of Environments at Melbourne alluded to such a possibility, but it wasn’t since working in the field

that this requisite has become a reality.

Working at H2o has been significant for my development as an architect - I have learned such a vast amount in a considerably short space of time - often being ‘dropped in the deep end and told to swim’. I have completed a range of different tasks and learned a myriad of new skills.

Advanced construction was one of our core designing projects that we were required to complete in our first year of Masters.

Its focus was on interrogating the make up of a conventional office tower building of approximately 250 meters in height returning a

optimum net let-able area.

The subject introduced us to all levels of detailing from zoomed out site planning to fine detail sections as you can see to the right. The project was completed in groups and my section interrogated the make up of the roof parapet and

our specific glazing system.

My experience gained working with H2o architects was invaluable when completing this project. I had been introduced to detailing drawings when working on a series of their projects over the time I worked there.

Dealing with a large brief, an eclectic client and several different program requirements this design studio has been a most challenging undertaking.

The proposed client is a character by the name of Alec Barlow. Based on a shady car dealing historical figure Alec Barlow required a bold new building to house his “New Direction Holden” empire.

I took on the challenge of revamping Holden to try and take the common preconceptions and transform them to exhibit a car company that is accessible to all and consciously focused on the future.

The building was executed via sketches on butter paper and then translated from Rhino into Revit. My aim was to expand my knowledge of these programs in the act of achieving the fifteen story

built form.

This project has thus ranged from concepts developed by hand in sketches and drawings, then to the computer explained in the virtual three dimensional sphere and finally back out again completing the loop in a 1:200 scale physical model made from box board and steel.
