INSTALLATION OF THERMOPLASTIC PIPING SYSTEMSBASIC PRINCIPLES OF BUTT FUSION

BUTT FUSION PROCEDURE FOR DOUBLE WALL PIPE WITH LEAK DETECTION CABLE SYSTEMSSplit-leak detection heating elements allow both the carrier and containment pipes to be welded simultaneously, with a pull cable in place. The mirror design, as shown in Figure 29, is capable of splitting apart and wrapping around a wire. The small hole centered at the bottom of the heater allows a pull wire to be in place during the fusion process. Once the pipe is heated, the heating element is split apart and removed, leav-ing the wire in place for the final pipe joining.

Figure 29 Split heating elements for leak detection system.

A short piece of wire is attached to the pull rope on both ends after planing. The wire runs through the heater during weld-ing in order to prevent damaging or melting the pull rope (see Figures 30 to 33). After each section is complete, the wire is pulled down to the next joint to be welded. The installation of pull rope is at the six o’clock position. A continuous pull rope, free from knots and splices, should be pulled through as the system is assembled.

Figure 30 Planing ends with pull rope installed

Figure 31 Pull rope connected by wire through heating element

Figure 32 Pipe ends heated with pull rope installed

Figure 33 Welding complete with pull rope installed

Follow standard butt-fusion procedure for welding. Other methods for welding with a solid heating element are avail-able that will accommodate a leak detection cable system.

SYSTEMS ENGINEERING DATAFOR THERMOPLASTIC PIPING

Table 23 VelocityThermoplastic pipe is not subject to erosion caused by high velocities and turbulent flow, and in this respect is superior to metal piping systems, particularly where corrosive or chemi-cally aggressive fluids are involved. The Plastics Pipe Institute has issued the following policy statement on water velocity:The maximum safe water velocity in a thermoplastic piping sys-tem depends on the specific details of the system and the oper-ating conditions. In general, 5 feet per second is considered to be safe. Higher velocities may be used in cases where the operating characteristics of valves and pumps are known so that sudden changes in flow velocity can be controlled. The total pressure in the system at any time (operating plus surge or water hammer) should not exceed 150 percent of the pressure rating of the system.Harrington Industrial Plastics recommends sizing all plastic piping systems to operate at velocities of (approximately) 5 feet per second or less.

WATER HAMMER & HYDRAULIC SHOCKSurge pressures due to water hammer are a major factor contributing to pipe failure in liquid transmission systems. A column of moving fluid within a pipeline, owing to its mass and velocity, contains stored energy.Since liquids are essentially incompressible, this energy cannot be absorbed by the fluid when a valve is suddenly closed. The result is a high momentary pressure surge, usually called water hammer or hydraulic shock. The five factors that determine the severity of water hammer are:

1. Velocity (The primary factor in excessive water hammer: see discussion of “Velocity “ above and “Safety Factor” on page 41.

2. Modulus of elasticity of material of which the pipe is made.3. Inside diameter of pipe.4. Wall thickness of pipe.5. Valve closing time.

Maximum pressure surges caused by water hammer can be

calculated by using the equation below. This surge pressure should be added to the existing line pressure to arrive at a maximum operating pressure figure.

Ps = V ( Et 3960 )1/2

Et +(3 x 105 Di)

Where:Ps = Surge Pressure, in psi V = Liquid Velocity, in feet per secondDi = Inside Diameter of Pipe, in inches E = Modulus of Elasticity of Pipe Material, psi t = Wall Thickness of Pipe, in inches

Calculated surge pressure, which assumes instantaneous valve closure, can be calculated for any material using the values for E (Modulus of Elasticity) found in the properties chart, pages 4-5.The most commonly used surge pressure tables for IPS pipe sizes are provided on the next page.

HYDRAULIC FUNDAMENTALSPRESSURE is the force per unit area. As commonly used in hydraulics and in this publication, it is expressed in pounds per square inch (psi).

ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE is the force exerted on a unit area by the weight of the atmosphere. At sea level, the atmospheric standard pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch.

GAUGE PRESSURE Using atmospheric pressure as a zero reference, gauge pressure is a measure of the force per unit area exerted by a fluid. Units are in psig.

ABSOLUTE PRESSURE is the total force per unit area exerted by a fluid. It equals atmospheric pressure plus gauge pressure. Units are expressed in psia.OUTLET PRESSURE or discharge pressure is the average pressure at the outlet of a pump during operation, usually ex-pressed as gauge pressure (psig).INLET PRESSURE is the average pressure measured near the inlet port of a pump during operation. It is expressed either in units of absolute pressure (psia) preferably, or gauge pressure (psig).DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE is the difference between the outlet pressure and the inlet pressure. Differential pressure is sometimes called Pump Total Differential pressure.VACUUM OR SUCTION are terms in common usage to indi-cate pressures in a pumping system below normal atmospher-ic pressure and are often measured as the difference between the measured pressure and atmospheric pressure in units of inches of mercury, vacuum, etc. It is more convenient to dis-cuss these in absolute terms (i.e., from a reference of absolute zero pressure in units of psia).

FLUID FUNDAMENTALS Fluids include liquids, gases, and mixtures of liquids, solids, and gases. For the purpose of this

publication, the terms fluid and liquid are used interchange-ably to mean pure liquids, or liquids mixed with gases or solids, which act essentially as a liquid in a pumping application.DENSITY and SPECIFIC GRAVITY have very similar, but not quite identical definitions. Density, or specifically mass density is a measure of the mass of a substance per unit volume, often expressed in pounds per cubic foot or grams per cubic centi-meter. Specific gravity is a ratio of the mass of a material to the mass of an equal volume of water at 4oC. Because specific gravity is a ratio, it is a unit-less quantity. For example, the spe-cific gravity of water at 4oC is 1.0 while its density is 1.0 gcm-3. The density of a fluid changes with temperature. SPECIFIC GRAVITY of a fluid is the ratio of its density to the density of water. As a ratio, it has no units associated with it.Example: When a cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 pounds, the mass density is 62.4 pounds per cubic foot at 4oC and the spe-cific gravity is 1.0.

If the cubic foot of liquid weighs 80 pounds the specific gravity

is 1.282

SG = weight of slution

= 80 lbs

= 1.282 SG

weight of water 62.4 lbs

TEMPERATURE is a measure of the internal energy level in a fluid. It is usually measured in units of degrees fahrenheit (°F) or degrees centigrade (°C). The temperature of a fluid at the pump inlet is usually of greatest concern. See °F-°C conversion chart on page 101.VAPOR PRESSURE of a liquid is the absolute pressure (at a given temperature) at which a liquid will change to a vapor. Vapor pressure is best expressed in units of psi absolute (psia). Each liquid has its own vapor pressure/temperature relationship. For example: If 100°F water is exposed to the reduced absolute pressure of .95 psia, it will boil. It will boil, even at 100°F.

IPEX - VEE Series Ball Valve The EasyFit VEE true union PVC ball valve is ideal for use in light industrial and water applications. It shares many features with the VXE such as the ultra-compact double block design, and full portbi-directional operation. A threaded seat stop carrier provides improved seal integrity under tough service conditions, while the EasyFit multifunction handle doubles as a tool for ball seat adjustment, and for tightening union nuts precisely. The VEE is available exclusively in PVC with EPDM seals.

Features:•Fully interchangeable with the previous

IPEX ball valves VE series•Pressure rate up to 232 psi at 73°F•PTFE-HDPE ball seats•EPDM seals•Safe locked carrier with micro-adjustment

of PE ball seats•Easyfit hergonomic multifunctional handle

with union nut rotation control and ball seat carrier adjustment key•Customizable handle label

IPEX - VKR Series Regulating Ball Valves With the new VKR metering and regulating two way ball valves, IPEX adds an important element to the already wide range of DualBlock® ball valves for industrial, OEM and water service applications. The new VKR combines the reliability and safety features of the IPEX VKD ball valves with a newly designed profiled ball dedicated to the regulation of flow in a precise and repeatable way. Thanks to the patent pending design of the profiled ball, the new VKR allows a linear type regulation of flow across the full stroke range with the ability to control flow from the very first opening of the handle. In addition, the pressure loss values remain extremely low when compared to the typical values of a diaphragm valve of the same size.

Features:•Sizes½"–2" •Unidirectionalflow•AvailableinPVC,PPandPVDF •Lowpressurelossvalues•Rangeofuse:0°-90° •Linearflowcharacteristiccurve•Pressureratedupto232psiat73°F •PTFEseatsandEPDM/FPMO-rings

Optional Accessories:•Complete interchangeability with IPEX ½" – 2" VKD Series ball valves•Compatible with VKD DualBlock® accessories•VKR handle can be equipped with a position indication plate with a graduated

scale of 5° detail which allows a clear and accurate reading.

These two layouts and cover were designed for a client advertising in the

Home Gallery Resort Properties magazine. The cover involved extensive

Photoshop work as well as all the backgrounds and photographs used. The

views of the lake, mountains, and sky through the windows, the pictures on

the TV, and the fire in the fireplaces were all added later in Photoshop. Along

with a lot of color/lens correction to all photos. I decided to use an evening

picture we took of the lake and the dock for the background image on the

two layouts. This helped the real estate agent and homeowner express the

setting and feel of the property, which enabled a quick and profitable sale.

These three layouts are examples of some of the different styles and themes

I developed at Home Gallery Resort Properties. We focused on original and

creative designs for all our customers, and eventually these main styles

became our clients most desirable layouts for their properties. The layouts

were modified to compliment each of our clients needs while maintianing a

particular look. Most of the images used in the backgrounds of many ads are

original photos that I took around Lake Arrowhead and the surrounding

areas. Always trying to keep a good stock of fresh photos for new clients,

Most of the images used in the backgrounds of many ads are

original photos that I took around Lake Arrowhead and the surrounding

areas. Always trying to keep a good stock of fresh photos for new clients,

ideas, and the change in seasons.

The two layouts above are covers that I have built for Homes & Land and Auto Trader Magazines. Both of these pages were templates that required all

graphics and text to be placed in precise locations. My primary responsibility was to make sure that all graphics looked good, clear, and were CMYK, 300

dpi, proper size, etc. The Homes & Land cover required extensive of Photoshop work including the sky added, the grass made green and uniform, the red

bricks cleaned, and wet spots on the patio cleared. Auto trader’s covers are less involved requiring only placement of photos/text and updating of dates

and barcodes.

The Graphics and layouts on the second page are additional examples of work that I have created throughout my Graphic Design career. Including logos,

stickers, banners, photo re-touch, boat and vehicle graphics, many product packages/labels, illustrator drawings (telescope), and web graphics.

The panoramic picture at the top is a picture i created on my own time. I took five separate pictures and stitched them all together using Photoshop. The

picture was taken at the top of Mammoth Mountain on 3-19-07 looking towards the Yosemite Valley.

Once part of the Spanish Mission lands, Redlands was incorporated in 1888 following an influx of wealthy easterners and mid westerners. Early settlers brought their cultures, traditions and treasures, adding to the City’s reputation as a cultural and educational community. Agriculture prospered with the navel orange and many citrus groves still surround Redlands today.

More than a hundred years ago the seed which became the city of Redlands was planted by two young Easterners who shared a dream of idyllic agricultural and residential community.

Redlands was the shared dream of Frank E. Brown, a civil engineer and Yale graduate, and E. G. Judson, a New York stock broker, who met in Southern California in late 1870’s.

Naming their Redlands colony for the color of the adobe soil, the two busily laid out a city, brought water from the mountains to the community, introduced the newly discovered Washington navel orange, and recruited settlers. It wasn’t before long before Redlands proudly proclaimed itself the Navel Orange Capi-tal of the World. One group of early settlers called itself the Chicago Colony and created what is now the downtown business district. They named the principal shopping street for State Street in Chicago.

In 1889, twins Alfred H. and Albert K. Smiley came to Redlands, and the town has changed forever. The Smiley brothers, well known educators and resort owners from New York, established a tradition of phi-lanthropy with their donation of the A. K. Smiley public library and park in 1889. Two decades later, the Clarence G. Whites gave the prosellis at the Redlands Bowl, and the Robert Watchorns built the Lincoln Shrine next to the library. These and many others built a city that was known as the “Jewel of the Inland Empire.” Many of the jewels are still with us.
