Vision behind my architecture For creating my architecture I do always start with researches based onsociological relationshipsbetweenusers, environmentanddesign. These researches are the base of my architecture to eventually end up with the architecture I do create. This architecture is an environment where the users of this architecture still the possibilty have to be free. So called I give back thefreedom to improvise and to give the possibility to make theirown choice how to deal with this environement.I do notate that as improvisationpossibility for the user. With this I want achieve with this architecture to return the awareness of the users about their environment. Being critical about the present situation of nowadays where they: people / human/ citizens / users are exposed to the increasing amount of imposed on wills oninfluences. I would like to give themthese awarenesses who and what they are back. //7 8. //8 9. Researchlab Jaarbeursterrein Utrecht Amsterdam & Utrecht, The Netherlands 2009 //9 10. Researchlab for Utrecht is founded in the start of Octobre 2009. It was notated as LAB01. With this lab we do participate the researchproject of Atelier Rijksbouwmeester. This initiave gives an oppurtunity for architects to cooporate temporarily within a group of fellow redundant architects. Architects who want to continue exploring new possibilities for architecture and urbanism issues of nowadays. With the aim of developing experiments and researches for issues of which most of the offices dont have the occasion for it .Our projectarea is the Jaarbeursterrein in Utrecht connected with the central station. Our goal was to research the possibilities to develop this area.We started with a bottom-up approach to gain data by making analyses of the area. With this data we developed four models for the area which might possible to use it. After analysing the possiblities of using these four models we eventually developed six scenarios. Six scenarios which are seeking the extremes within themself. Extremes to extract questions and possibilities what if the scenario will be used. For the final product we will end up with an experted advice or manifest for the areas development.//10 11. Project ExCiTe Ferryterminal Hunterspoint Hunterspoint New York, NY, 2007 - 2009 //17 18. This project for Studio Border Conditions is fo- cused on the area of New York. The research started with a fascination you want to research about. Mine was the underground scene in New York. But instead of taking the contex of the underground scene in the art scene or mu- sic scene I took this literally by going underground, to the New York Subway stations. In these areas happens streetperformances done by artists who are expressing their art to the public. Art expressions like dance, music or just entertainment performances. These performances are based on temporary time, unexpected and suprise and done on locations which are not really made to perform. But just because of these elements of suprise of these performances they are creating a transformation of space they are happening. My research is focussing on the architectural and sociological elements of these perfor- mances mainly what this transformation is and the effect on the area and on the people. For this project this research will be done by making mappings to be nally the base and inspiration for the development of a building.// Mapping / map of all subway connections with their stations inManhattan, Long Island and Brooklyn//18 19. Times squareh 1114 day 1terminal space Mapping proces// Guitar and violin performance situated on a platform at the Time Square Subway stationAfter analyzing differentperformances I decided tostudy one performance in de-tail. So I decided to study theperformance of a guitar playerwith a violin player. I have been looking at thetrajectories of the audienceduring the performance andhow they went and added thefactor time. By inserting thisfactor the route/trajectory ofthe audience became a pathbased on time where increas-ing and decreasing of speedwas present. This increasingand decreasing of speed do Inotate as rhythm.// Trajectories and positions on platform // Domains of circulation versus // 3d mass model of theof people during performancedomains of improvisation trajectories of people //19 20. I notated their location, their trajectories and dierences between where they started andwhere they end, all during a certain period of 46 frames of 0.5 seconds. With this informationI made a diagram of this information which ended up in a structure of rhythms during time. This structure naly showed the basic structure for the design. This structure is notated asrhythm in time (transitions, increasing of speed, decreasing of speed) The structure which Ifinally got is a structure of peoples behavior disturbed by the performance and a structure ofpeoples behavior without any disturbing by the performance. After doing this I finally got a structure which shows the transformation of the space bythe performance. Which I used for the design of the building. For developing the reasearchprocudure towards had I chosen to use the structure for a function which expressed theriged structure of traveling and a function which contains the elements being the opposit ofit.I ended up in the function of a ferryterminal which contains spaces for art. The deformation is done on a grid system of the frames versus distance towards the performance. This grid represents this sequential development of the performance. With this deformation or deconstruction of the sequential development I gained three parameters. These parameters are three rhythms which are coming out of the interaction (the transformation of the space during the performance).entrance For the final step I took these three rhythms and merged them into one diagram which shows an abstract entrance interpretation of the transformation by the performance. I called this interpretation the diagram of rhythms terminal /of the performance.parking terminal /parking terminal /parking entranceentranceentranceentranceRHYTHM # 1_ connectivity ows of indiv (expo)RHYTHM # 2_ transit / place isolated spaces = transit stimulated spaces RHYTHM # 3_ individual/collective (functions)(gaps/closed) awareness spaces = connection with outside ows of collective (terminal)parameter #1:parameter #2:Parameter #3: Rhythm of connectivity Rhythm of the character of the transitionRhythm of the impact on the transition //21 22. The location for the building will be situated at the riverside of Long Island, Hunterspoint. The area of Hunterspoint is nowadays a deserted and desolated area where almost no development is. The results would be presented in the shape of billboards during the First Interna- tional Bienale of Rotterdam. The assignment was divided in several locations in Rotterdam.
