In this design studio we had to redesign an old part of a residential neighborhood in Shiraz. In order to do this we had to go to this neighborhood, ask people about their family, number of bedrooms they had and any preferences they might have had. Then find the average numbers and statistics and redesign the whole neighborhood for them. The aerial view on the left is the current situation of these houses. The drawing on the right is the design after consideration of the number of people and the average area of houses. The aim of this design studio was for us to design a friendly residential neighborhood with the emphasis on people and their needs in a residential community.

Below is the part of the neighborhood i decided to design. It’s located on the top left corner of the site. In this design we were asked to design a neighborhood which is focused on pedestrians more than vehicles. So there are no side walks and the paths are full of trees and pauses to slow the cars down. The areas seen in front of houses are designated for small children to safely play and socialize in the secure space under the supervision of their caretaker. I’ve tried to put places like kitchens or living rooms which people spend most of their time in, adjacent to these areas so they can easily watch over the children.

Page 9: Portfolio 2011-2015

Here are the documents of one of the houses in the residential neighborhood. This house consists of two stories: the one on the ground level has two bedrooms and the one on the top floor is a one bedroom apartment. Each one of these apartments also has their own designated yard. There’s also an open area adjacent to the kitchens for purposes of drying clothes, cooking and washing big bowls.

In this project we were asked to design a shopping mall in a 30000 square meter site adjacent to a mountain. This mall contains Retail stores ,Super market ,Hyper market ,Food court ,Bank ,several coffee shops and two cinemas. The aim for this design studio was to understand and work with irregular and fluid forms and structural systems associated with them.My design takes advantage of natural light in all different levels and from a wide range of windows and entrances.Since the site for this project is adjacent to a mountain. My design is developed parallel to the mountain. So the building is facing the street.By having a huge amount of glass areas, this design receives natural light in all the spaces, from the front windows and also the window on the roof. The structural system used in this building is 3D-truss for the roof structure and regular frame structure to hold the different floors.

In this building i designed a main atrium with a huge void and a café on the ground floor. It gives an open view through the building and also distributes natural light to all the areas. My design consists of three pairs of escalators, three sets of stairs and seven elevators. So in case of an emergency there are a lot of ways to evacuate the building in a short time.

“The mountains are intimations of transcendence, which he is now free to pursue, and the walking writes messages in every cell of his body, telling him that he is not locked inside a cement box, nor in a water drum, but is moving forward.” -Michael D. O’BrienA mountain is the symbol of strength and sometimes it’s the symbol of obstacle and climbing it is the way to advance to the top and overcome the obstacle. A cultural center is a place where people attend to make themselves better, learn new things and exceed to new levels. So my idea was to depict this notion in the form of my building and literally allow people to climb to the top of it. Since it’s located in a park, the building’s exterior has become a part of the park and it would attract people to climb the stairs to the top and maybe eat something at the cafe at the top. Also bees are insects that always work as a society and they live and work in a beehive, so since a cultural center is meant to bring people together I used different sizes of hexagons in different areas my design.

In this design studio, we were asked to design a cultural center where people would gather to teach, learn, observe and view art work, an auditorium where movies or concerts could take place and there also would be a place to eat. The site of this project is located at the corner of a park so it would attract both pedestrians in the park and people on the street.

Page 16: Portfolio 2011-2015

Educational Zone GalleryAuditorium

Basically my design consists of four zones. The middle zone is the common area where people can meet or wait for their friends. They can access upper levels which include cafe and restaurants. There is a zone for the auditorium and the common area works as a barrier to isolate sound to ensure silence in the educational and gallery zones. There is a set of stairs in the middle of the educational zone which goes to the painting atelier on the next floor. The classrooms all have a sink at their disposal due to their nature of being flexible to hold classes like pottery or chemistry. The structural system for this building minus the auditorium is a regular frame structure which is very common in Iran. So it’s relatively cheap to construct and there is no need of specially trained workers.

15

Page 17: Portfolio 2011-2015

Since my design is located in a corner of a park and it is seen from all the sides, I’ve designed two doors, one facing the park and another one facing the intersection of the streets. I’ve also designed a separate door opening into the educational zone so students and instructors can use that door without the need to go through other areas first. There’s also another door that opens on the second floor, where there is a café where people can walk up the exterior stairs and use that door to get inside.

16

Page 18: Portfolio 2011-2015

As it is seen in the gallery, the interior of my design has the essence of the exterior. There’s a sense of unity in there. Details follow the same instructions as the form. So the use of hexagons in the interior, the ceiling, the floor, the columns and basically everything is an indication that this module is propagated through the facade to make a whole, which is the same as every single bit.

Ground Floor PlanIn this project we were asked to design a building consisting two houses that are completely separate and have complete privacy. One house was supposed to be large enough for a family of four and the other for a newly-wed couple. Due to regulations in Iran we could only build the 60% of the north side of the site , so the struggle was to design both houses which have separate yards of their own ,nearly impeccable natural lighting for all spaces and have full privacy.

In this project we were asked to design an elementary school. The school had to contain 12 classrooms, 2 for each grade. We also had to design a gym, a small library and a lab for this school. What we had to struggle with was good circulation, good and sufficient natural lighting for all the spaces and an overall sense of identity.Lighting is one of the most important factors in a well-designed class room, and since southern lighting is the best and most efficient lighting in Iran, and most of the school year is in the winter and fall when it’s colder and sun has a shorter path in the sky, I had to consider lighting very carefully. To ensure impeccable lighting for all the classrooms, my design is in two floors, where each floor contains 6 classrooms and they all receive the southern light.Other areas like the gym or the library which use artificial lighting and are less of a priority for lighting are designed on the other side.

Reviving Lost Spaces in ShirazProfessor Fahimi6 weeksAutocad, 3ds Max, Vray, PhotoshopGroup work

Page 28: Portfolio 2011-2015

This project was aimed to widen our vision to find lost spaces in our city. To do this, we grouped up and looked for different spaces that have been left unused and turned into eye sores and develop and design those urban spaces into usable and aesthetically pleasing places. My group consisted of Hamzeh Heydari, Hesam Mohammadi and of course, me. My contribution to the team was brainstorming, designing and mostly the 3d visualization. We selected a special site in our city, a river which is dry through more than 9 months of the year (aerial photo on the next page). There is a dam on the river and we took advantage of that to keep some of the water that is stored over time and since we don’t have access to seas in our city, we designed a nice place where people could enjoy the water. There are also places to eat meals, galleries to view art works and spend some time. Then We expanded our design and planned a pedestrian walking and running route. This path starts at the near mountains where we designed spaces to walk and enjoy the view and it advances to the other side of the river and at the end it reaches a park. There’s also an old Persian garden with an old facade on the route for the observers who might be interested to visit.

Phase 1: The Mountain Watch

Phase 2: The River Watch

This design was divided into three parts or phases. Phase 1 is the mountain watch where people start their walking trip, and there are parkings for people to drive there. Phase 2 is the most important phase where people can enjoy the water and have breakfast. It will also become an urban landmark due to its looks and size. Phase 3 is a route to walk in the middle of jungle-like gardens and it ends in Park Golha.

ROCA International Design ContestJump the Gap, 2015

This design contest is about innovation and the future of bathrooms. The most important things to keep in mind was that it should be futuristic, environment friendly and easy to use by the elderly.Water Companion is a device or an idea designed to provide a simple way for people to visually understand the amount of water consumed ,using a simple interface. Since water is going to be a serious problem in the near future (at least in some countries), the main way to prevent drought is by people, using less water. But people don’t always know how much water they’re consuming and if they did, they still wouldn’t know how much they should be using. This device shows the amount of water they’re using (for example while taking a shower) and also compares that to average use by Green , Yellow and Red lights and face emoticons.

By Pressing the big circle the water starts flowing by the default flow percentage that can be changed and it will reach the desired temperature automatically in the matter of seconds. The Happy face appears and depending on the activity ( for example : shower ) and the amount of water consumed it turns to the other faces.

2929

Page 31: Portfolio 2011-2015

This device was designed to be sustainable by making people think sustainable and care about the future of the world. It also has a lot of side features that makes it futuristic and automatic and since it has a really simple interface it’s also easy to use by the elderly. Some of the side features are : Automatic temperature adjustment (which is done by the two temperature sensors at the end of hot and cold water pipes) Clock/ Calendar Daily and monthly water usage show with graphs Room temperature Alarm and automatic water stopper ( for example it can end the water flow after 10 minutes) Notification to tell when the water has reached the desired temperature Potential mobile app to show all the stats and notifications . This device is not just a faucet designed for the shower , it can also be used for kitchen sink, bathtub, hand washing, garden hose , etc which work with their own average of water usage.Lastly , for this or similar ideas to have the most impact , the government and water companies should support them to become cheaper and also persuade people to equip and use this device. Then they can move in the right direction to save the earth and also make their water bill smaller. Also if this idea is supported to give people with low water usage , water bill waiver, it would help people prevent the water problems .
