PROTYPE MODEL FOR NURSING COLLEGE LIBRARIES CONSORTIUM IN ANDHRA PRADESH
HOME
This portal is designed as part of the thesis work on the research topic “AWARENESS &
USE OF ONLINE INFORMATION RESOURCES BY STUDENTS OF POST
GRADUATE NURSING IN ANDHRA PRADESH – AN ANALYTICAL STUDY” being
carried out by J. Selva Sekaran, under the research supervision of Dr. G. Saroja, Assistant
Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open
University, Hyderabad.
The Information needs of nursing students in the 21st century are more likely to be different
than those in the past due to the changes taking place in the technology, educational practices,
methods of instruction etc. Three different phases can be observed in the postgraduate
nursing students’ use of information resources - pre-computer (1970s, 1980s and early
1990s); early online ( early to mid 1990s) and internet(late 1990s to the present). During the
pre computer phase, nursing students information use was almost exclusively library based,
and dependent on print resources accessed through card catalogues and bibliographic indexes.
During the early online phase the student’s encountered with computerized library system
such as online public information catalogue (OPAC) and bibliographic database on CD-
ROM. The early online system and database were still mainly ‘finding tools’ rather than
‘content provider’ and students relied mainly on resources with their own library. During the
internet phase (late 1990s onwards) the students have drawn on an increasing range of online
tools and resources, of multiple types. Present day student community have access to sea of
information through the world wide web and have a number of tools like – search engines,
webopacs, directories, Web 2.0 tools to obtain the required information beyond a physical
library.
In this context, present study explores the awareness and use of online nursing resources by
the Post Graduate students of Nursing Colleges in Andhra Pradesh.
