Welcome to our fall 2015 Term! The end of term critiques at the Saints and Sinners lounge have been a great success, at least twenty-five artists participated in the winter term critique. Our fall critique will be on Wednesday December 9th from 6 - 8:30PM. You do not have to bring work to participate but it’s more fun if you do, so mark your calendar for this cash bar event. Congratulations to the many students and faculty members who are in this year’s Greater Michigan Exhibition, many are award winners! Check out the great works until September 11, 2015.

Cover Artist/Faculty Spotlight

RUTH HOWELL As a student of the early seventies, I was encouraged to focus on the expressive nature of art. When I returned to work as a visual artist in the nineties, I rediscovered my interest in classical realism and spent time revisiting the techniques, the compositional tools, and the renaissance artist’s use of color and light. While exploring the work of earlier artists, it became evident that a strong foundation in technique and craftsmanship enables artists to be more effective in their creative expression. The classical approach combined with the new methods and materials available for artists today enables me to create work that is classical in nature yet timeless in content.

The process of creating art has become as much a part of my work as the end result. I enjoy exploring the wide range of media available to artists today and try to remain open to the possibilities that they create. For many years, I worked exclusively in watercolor. Lately, I have enjoyed creating art using watercolors, as well as mixed media, oils, pastels and encaustic.

Travel and ancient art and architecture are strong influences in my work. “Vestiges of Time” is a series that came out of a trip to Europe with my daughter. It explores the connections that exist between the past and the present. The idea that we can reach out and touch something that another artist’s hand created thousands of years ago inspires me. The fact that something so fragile can survive generations becomes a metaphor for our lives… we are vulnerable yet we endure.

I am on the faculty of the Midland Center for the Arts where I enjoy teaching courses in watercolor, drawing, painting and mixed media. My art has been included in exhibitions at ArtPrize, the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, Governor’s Residence, Midland Center for the Arts, the Saginaw Art Museum, and the University of Michigan.

The greatest achievement of ArtPrize is its ability to attract a diverse population of artists and visitors, bring them together for 19 days and engage in a critical ‘discussion’ about contemporary art. All of this happens without a centralized curatorial influence; simply artists collaborating with their venue to curate dramatic exhibitions.

The seventh annual ArtPrize competition will feature 1,652 artist 162 venues within three-square miles of downtown Grand Rapids. Two grand prizes worth $400,000 and eight category awards worth $160,000. Half decided by public vote, and half decided by a jury of art experts. Great Lakes Bay Area artists always have a strong showing at ArtPrize. A complete list of participating artists and venues can all be viewed at www.artprize.org/entries.

Join us for a full-day trip to Grand Rapids, view ArtPrize contest entries at a variety of locations and cast YOUR votes. A charter bus will depart at 8AM (be at the Center around 7:45AM) from Midland Center for the Arts. Upon arrival, gallery viewing will be on your own or in small groups. Groups have the option to meet periodically throughout the day to swap stories, for a midday meal, special viewings and transport to other locations (itinerary to be determined).

Visit www.artprize.org for a list of artists and venues to preplan your visit. Works exhibited Sept 23 - Oct 11.

Because of the popular demand we have two bus trips this year!

ARTPRIZE BUS TRIP TO GRAND RAPIDS

Map out your trip to Grand Rapids with a very special happy hour event with artists, Valerie Allen and Armin Mersmann. Join them at the Saints and Sinners Lounge inside Midland Center for the Arts for their He Said/She Said presentation on ArtPrize. They will reveal their personal top ten artists and venues you can’t miss during your trip. Sometimes they will agree but the fun starts when they disagree! Great minds DON’T always think alike! The artists will defend their choices and the art battle will begin.

This event will be designed to enhance your visit to Grand Rapids on our ArtPrize trip or on your own! This evening’s event is free and open to the public. Cash bar will be available with beer, wine and soft drinks. Artist presentation begins at 6pm.
