HEY PORTAGE MAGAZINE ARTICLE

With the world at our finger tips digitally, if you've found yourself flipping through a magazine it might mean that you're craving something new to do. Maybe you're be sitting in a waiting room right now and taking notice of someone near you, reminding yourself that you've been thinking about getting in shape. If you're feeling restless or are interested to challenge yourself at a new skill, chances are that the Portage Regional Recreation Au-thority (PRRA) has a program that might inspire your participation.

For some, the notion of community recreation may translate as simply something 'to keep the kids occu-pied', but that's not the case with the programming of-fered by the PRRA and they're very excited to talk about what's in store for people of all ages and abilities.

Until recently, the focus of most of the programming for the department was largely on summer camp programs running through July and August for youth, but as Rec-reation Manager Angie Shindle shares with us, the re-opening of the Shindleman Aquatic Centre as a year-round indoor aquatic venue has been a catalyst to ex-plore more uses for their facilities for all ages and through more months of the year. "We find that most of our programming that appeals to all ages seems to happen in the pool. Swimming les-sons are offered from baby through to adult and we have senior's aqua fit classes," says Shindle. "We really can't put an age range on it - we're getting good re-sponses from all ages. We've just started our adult swimming lesson program and the response has been great," Shindle says. "We have scheduled this in its own timeslot, separate from other swim programming so that those participants can really feel comfortable. We're also excited to reintroduce aqua Zumba and pad-dleboard yoga in the New year."

Stride Place itself is the host venue for a variety of ac-tivities not operated by the PRRA, but led by independent groups including minor hockey, judo and taekwondo clubs operate their clubs on site. Becoming internationally recognized as a host site for

national events including the 2019 Mixed Doubles Olympic Curling trials and the national broomball championships, the versatility of the space creates an environment that accommodates a wide scope of fit-ness and sport programming. Additionally, instructors from the community also use the venue to conduct their own personal training and fitness classes. For Shindle, it is critical that the PRRA find classes that compliment and not compete with some of the existing community organizations.

"We're always open to ideas from the community about what is lacking and what they would like to see us offer," says Angie. "People can call, e-mail or drop in to see me with their ideas. This is a great opportunity for us to draw from some of the great resources that we have in the community that are interested to host and facilitate a program themselves but need a venue and need administrative assistance for the registration. We love to explore partnerships like that."

The growing popularity of the summer youth programs has the PRRA exploring opportunities for shorter sessions during Spring Break as well as considering opportunities for youth during in-service days throughout the school year. It creates another opportunity for a positive touch point with families and an alternative to spending an idle day at home, which has attracted interest from parents in the region.

"One other consideration that is very important for us is making sure that what we offer is affordable for everyone," Shindle tells us. "We are a registered non-profit, so we do need to cover the costs to operate whatever we propose, but we're not motivated to generate a large profit from it. We want to make it feasible for everyone." For more information about the PRRA and their programs or facilities, you can visit their website at www.strideplace.ca and download their Active Guide for all the latest information and schedules.
