new products Edited by TED MILLER Portable Transducer Display Unit Currently being used to measure torque in vehicle steering systems, this instrument is designed to work with and d.c. transducer. Measuring 12 x 10 x 6ins. the instrument is simple and convenient to use. Stabilised battery power supplies are included for the amplifier and circuitry, with a variable supply (3-9V) for the transducers. Output display is a robust, centre- zero, taut-band meter. The input amplifier can be unplugged and used externally if required, its power supplies being brought out on the input socket. The output of the amplifier goes through a range selection network to the meter and to an output monitor socket. The three ranges can be individually adjusted and so can be set to read real engineering units. A switched filter is provided for meter damping. The alternative input arrangements provide input sensitivities down to 250/0/250pV. Zero setting is by means of a 10-turn potentiometer. New Pyroelectric Detector The Barnes Engineering Co., who specialise in advanced infra-red equipment, have just announced a newly developed thermal infra-red detector which requires no bias, no cooling and has uniform sen- sitivity over a wide infra-red wavelength region. As with other Barnes equipment it will be distributed in the U.K. by B. & K. Instruments Ltd. Barnes claim that this new pyroelectric detector has a useful noise equivalent power from near d.c. to beyond 2000Hz, and is significantly faster, more sensitive and more convenient to use than any previously available long-wavelength IR detectors. The unit provides up to 24 channels of digital record complete with date and time in hours, minutes and seconds, of events. Each channel is identified by a different letter or symbol. The recorder looks at all points continuously; when an alarm or an event occurs, the letter corres- ponding to that channel is printed, while simul- taneously the date and time is printed. New Digital Measuring System This new Farnell system is modular and consists of

a main frame/display unit with an access port in the front. This accepts various “plug-in” modules each one of which permits accurate measurement of a specific electrical parameter. The modules presently available enable the system to become a digital volt- meter, a lMHz counter /timer or an ohmmeter and other plug-in modules will be announced periodically.

Eight-Speed Tape Deck The TD 10 is the latest tape deck from S.E. Labora-

tories and supersedes the TD 5 tape transport. Precise tape handling is achieved by a phase-locked capstan servo and sensitive reel servos. Main features are its lO+in. reel capability using 1, + or tin. tape, its 8 tape speeds (the TD 10 is fully bi-directional) and its minimal size.

Multi-Channel Carrier Frequency System This multi-channel version of the existing Vibro-

Meter equipment range is suitable for use with wire and foil strain gauges, rotary transformers and trans- ducers. It has long term stability and it is capable of driving U.V. galvanometer recorders etc.

Each module has British edgewise meters, one per channel, for bridge balancing, indication and monitor- ing. Single channel version is produced by simply attaching a plug-on power unit.
