Tayport v Musselburgh Ath
May we firstly extend a warm welcome to Musselburgh Athletic Committee , Coaching Staff , Players and Supporters for todays Super League match.
"The ' Burgh" play their home games at Olivebank Stadium which has room for around 2,500 spectators.
Musselburgh teams have had their share of success over the years. Winning the Scottish Junior cup in 1922- 23 and runners up twice in more recent years (2010-1 l and 2014- 15).
J4
They gained promotion to the East Super League as winners of the East Premier League in 2008-2009 and have been East Region Champions in Division 1 (1970-71) and Division 2 Champions in (2000- 01) . Add to this several local cups, too numerous to mention is quite an impressive record .
The last time we met in the Super League was the opening game of season 2013/14 . That day in August we suffered a 3-1 defeat at Olive Bank Stadium. Paul Harvey helped himself to a first half hat trick within the first half hour before 'Port scored a second half consolation goal when Paul Thomson forced in a goal bound effort from Ross Grant.
In the return fixture at the Canniepairt in January 2014 the spoils were shared in a 1-l draw . Dave Baikie's side took the lead as early as the ninth minute, through Matty Adam. 30 minutes later 'Burgh scored a well-worked equaliser, with Mike McKenna beating Sam Morris with an impressive first-time finish .
Mussel burgh finished 2013/ 14 season just outside the top six. With Tayport relegated after just one season back in the top flight.
An interesting statistic is 'Burgh's Scott Gibson has played 199 games for the club and if selected today will join "The 200 Club". Scott has an impressive resume having previously played for Haddington Athletic , Airdrie, Newtongrange, Annan and Preston.
With Mussel burgh sitting in 9th position on 10 points and Tayport seven places below on 7 points this game is crucial for both sides .
Here's to an entertaining game .
Last weekend saw us advance in the Scottish Cup with a 2-1 away victory at Lochee Harp , it goes without saying I'm pleased to get through to the next round. We started the game on the back of a couple of disappointing reversals in the league to Fauldhouse United at home and Sauchie away losing 3-0 and 3-1 respectively . In both games we started poorly which is an aspect that we just can't afford to do in the division we are competing in. In previous games we've played this season, individuals errors have played a major part in allowing the game to get away from us when we were starting to get a foothold. Last season we may have made the same errors but weren't punished as much, so it goes without saying that this is an area of our game in particular that we must improve on . I am confident that the acquisition of John Ovenstone from Linlithgow will help on that front and of course I will not stop attempting to bring better players to the club. It's vital for us that we improve the quality we have at the club and that present players we have step up to the plate.
It didn't look clever after we lost a goal in the first 5 minutes or so in last week's game at Lochee Harp , there was an element of fortune in it with an unfortunate slip by Drew Fleming allowing them in . Their lead was short lived and we deservedly scored two in quick succession to take the lead and went on to dominate the half and with a bit more composure probably could have had the game sewn up by the interval. I'm certain a third goal for us would have resulted in Harp's young side losing confidence and their will to continue fighting , but although we had the opportunities to increase our lead we never capitalised, which of course kept Harp in the game . Of course we'd have liked a much bigger victory but the most important aspect was we won the game and are in the next round, the victory will also give us that bit more confidence going forward .
This afternoon Musselburgh Athletic are our league opponents , may I take this opportunity to welcome them to Tayport, they arrive on the back of a good home victory over Fauldhouse so we know how tough a task we have on our hands today . If our start and attitude is at its best then we can achieve success and the points. s~ ~ POJtZ

Tayport get back to league action today , after being on Scottish Junior Cup duty last weekend. The Canniepairt men made it through to the second round of the national competition , thank s to a narrow 2-1 win at Lochee Harp's Beechwood Park .
The hosts actually took a shock lead when Conor Ireland scored after only eight minutes , but that counter was cancelled out by a classy Gary Sutherland goal , just two minutes later. Sutherland expertly chested the ball down on the run and slotted his low finish into the far corner of the net.
Around ten minutes later, 'Port scored what proved to be the winner. Gregor Anderson and Sutherland were involved in the build-up and Dale Robertson fired in the shot, which was deflected over the Harp ' keeper by one of his own defenders .
Numerous half-chances were spurned as Tayport tried to put the game to bed , but Harp put up some stubborn resistance for the rest of the match and the visitors had to settle for a narrow win.
It was a much-needed victory , as the two previous league matches did not go Tayport ' s way . Visiting Fauldhouse United won 3-0 on the Canniepairt three weeks ago , on an afternoon to forget. 'Hoose opened the scoring on twenty minutes, then Ryan Suttie was ordered off for a second booking before the break.
Fauldhouse netted early in the second half and soon ended the contest with a third goal. To compound matters, central defender John Ovenstone was sent off on his debut, leaving Tayport to complete the match with only nine men.
A fortnight ago, another three goals were conceded at Sauchie , before Alan Tulleth reduced the deficit with a cracking late free kick. There was no chance of a comeback, however , and Tulleth saw red in the final minute of what was another frustrating reversal.
Let's hope that the win at Lochee Harp in the 'Scottish ' can be a springboard for some league success, although Musselburgh are bound to provide tough opposition this afternoon .

It ' s not easy for a club to maintain a website , ensuring it's up to date and accurate, especially when the club is relying on volunteers adding yet another task to what is probably an already heavy club related burden. The official SJFA website shouldn ' t have such issues, one would think , but a glance at the site reveals that it still advertises last season ' s Junior Cup Final on its home page. Most recent posting under 'Cup Draws' is February and the most recent addition to the 'Notice Board ' is September 2011. Under 'Sponsors Page' there's a lonely posting from 2009 announcing Emirates' long expired sponsorship of the Junior Cup.
****** Last Saturday was possibly the last time Tayport FC would ever play at Lochee Harp's Beechwood Park. Beechwood has been identified as a prime site for expanding the Mini side of the John Clark Motor empire . John Clark already has BMW and Mercedes showrooms in Kings Cross Road and the Harp site is perfect for their expansion.
For Harp it appears to be the perfect move . Beechwood Park , although it holds many , many happy memories , is pretty tired and the

offer of a custom built replacement stadium with a 4G surface just across the road is an offer that would be hard to refuse. Harp don ' t own Beechwood - it's owned by Dundee City Council - so there would be no cash windfall but there would be great savings in
respect of the cost of upkeep.
It ' s likely John Clark would take over Beechie first and until the new stadium is built , Harp
would ground share, probably with Downfield.
The new stadium would have to find a name. New Beechwood Park is a bit mundane so surely there would be only one name for the new ground. It ' s got to be Kelly Park or Kelly Stadium in recognition of the lifetime of effort the Kelly family have put into Lochee Harp.

1887 128 years ago the Evening Telegraph reported under its Tayport news that 'A meeting of football players was held on Tuesday to consider the advisability of amalgamating the 3 existing clubs into one. Representations were present from each viz:- Tayport; Our Boys and Craigmount. After some discussion it was decided to form a new club out of the three, to be named The Abertay. Wm Ness was appointed captain; James Pow, treasurer; and Thomas Keddie, Ogilvie [sic] Street, secretary.'
1982 33 years ago, much as it is now, the plight of refugees had been making headlines . It was Vietnamese boat people who were seeking sanctuary and a number had made their way to these parts. In its own small way, Tayport FC did its bit to make life in foreign parts a bit more enjoyable by giving Alliance team game time to a displaced Vietnamese boat person , Siu Phi. Siu was never going to be a star, however , and managed only three games . The question of international clearance to allow him to play was raised by the authorities but when Siu was jumping in his dinghy back in Vietnam, the last thing he was thinking about was a piece of paper which would allow him to play football for Tayport . Fortunately, such an image was sufficient to convince the powers that be that red tape could be dispensed with
1995 20 years ago Tayport FC signed the man whose name would subsequently become etched in the club's folklore. Stephen Ross had been around the world, emigrating to Canada, returning to Scotland , then hopping off to the other side of the world for a few months to play football in New Zealand. Then back again to Canada before settling back in Dundee and playing a couple of seasons with Broughty Athletic and then North End before signing on the dotted line for Dave Baikie at Tayport in 1995. Two goals for Stephen in the 2-0 win v Camelon at Fir Park in that season's Scottish Junior Cup Final brought the Cup to Tayside for the first time in 67 years and ensured a place in history for wee Stevie.

Jl(JJI' Jl'JJ., Jl'(J1\' 1'11/J., l'lfl' This season is the 20th anniversary of Tayport's ground breaking Scottish Cup win and between now and the end of the season we will follow the club's cup progress that season from the 1 st round through to that May 12th Sunday afternoon at Fir Park, Motherwell. The first round draw paired Tayport with Banchory St.Teman from the North Region. The tie was scheduled for the Canniepairt on 14th October.
The Glasgow Evening Times in reporting The Holy Grail that cup holders Camelon had been drawn against Glasgow Perthshire, pointed out that the Glasgow club "would be facing a lethal weapon in Camelon's David Flynn whose 12 goal Scottish Cup scoring spree had made him the most feared striker in Scotland" It was announced that OVD would be sponsoring the Scottish Junior Cup for a further three years to the tune of £175,000. [Wouldn't they just love that sort of sponsorship these days]
------ -----.---, The Port Prog noted in 'Today's Game' that "injuries and illness amongst his squad have caused manager Baikie some concern this week and, as a result, there could well be some enforced changes in the home line-up . Despite two good wins in the past fortnight Tayport will be under no illusions as to the task before them this afternoon in what should be an entertaining contest" Hamish Mackay (pictured left) was one of the absentees that day .
Continued over
continued The manager's column pointed out that "the visitors [Banchory] were certainly not here for just a day out. They know the task facing them. The fact that they are unbeaten away from home this season is a reminder to our players of that task . No one hands out victories. Victories must be earned. Let's get our attitude and discipline correct from the word go. Do so and I'm confident that we can progress in the competition" said the manager.
The Fife Herald commented thus ,, Pe.spite. worries over Q.
