Lightning Ragginger Grabs Shanghai Pole

Shanghai. Team Eagle’s Martin Ragginger stormed to pole position for Rounds 2 and 3 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia at the 2013 FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX at the Shanghai International Circuit today. The Austrian, who won the opening round of the championship in Malaysia last month, dominated the session with an early quick lap which was more than a second faster than his closest rival, Earl Bamber of Craft Nexus Racing. Third fastest overall was Japan’s Keita Sawa of LKM Racing Team.

With two races at the Formula 1 showcase weekend, new regulations mean the fastest laps in the 30-minute session set the grid for Round 2, with the second quickest times setting the starting order for Round 3.

With Ragginger also on pole for Round 3, Bamber and Sawa each start the second race from the same positions, while joining the Japanese driver on the second row for Round 2 will be former two-time champion Darryl O’Young, making a guest appearance with Team Carrera Cup Asia this weekend, fourth quickest on track. For Round 3, it will be Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila of Macau.

In Class B, for non-professional drivers, Mentos Racing’s Egidio Perfetti continued his impressive start to his second Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season, grabbing pole position for both races this weekend, while Nexus Racing’s Alif Hamdan was second fastest overall. Third quickest in the class was Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan of Singapore.

Newcomer Natasha Seatter of Malaysia, making her Porsche Carrera Cup Asia debut this weekend and standing in for PICC Team StarChase regular and reigning champion Alexandre Imperatori, acquitted herself well despite only four hours’ previous experience in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Li Chao of China went off early in the session, only managing to set one timed lap before the incident. That means he will start both races from the back of the grid.

Following his dominant start to the season,

Qualifying : with pole position and a win in Round 1, Ragginger was on fire during the session: “Now we’re much more confident with the car, it’s much better. Everything is coming more together this year than last year. Of course every time you go out there is pressure, but in practice I felt confident and I just thought about what I could do to really prepare for this qualifying session.”

Bamber was full of praise for Ragginger’s incredible lap, but ready to give it his all come the race: “I’m hoping for another good start. It’s great to have so many quick drivers in the field, and I know they’ll be on my tail, but I’ll be keeping my eyes firmly ahead.”

With changing grip levels keeping all the drivers on their toes, Sawa was satisfied with his second row starting position: “Third is good enough in these conditions. The F1 grip level is different to last year, and I expected it to be better. Today I also had a problem with the high temperature. The competition is very tough this year, so I’m going to go for as many points as possible. There’s absolutely no room for any DNFs or incidents.” continued to page 3

continued from page 120-year-old Zhang Da Sheng of Basetex Racing will be another driver on the comeback trail after a disappointing opening round.

In Class B, for non-professional drivers, Egidio Perfetti will be looking to build on a formidable opening round performance where, like Ragginger, he took pole position and a resounding victory in the category.

OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia, currently second on the Class B leaderboard, will be absent in Shanghai, but expect another strong showing from young newcomer Alif Hamdan of Malaysia. Hamdan, 22, made an impressive series debut in Malaysia and, like several of the fledgling talents joining the series this year, will get quicker as the season progresses.

As the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia adds an extra race to its 2013 calendar, the stakes could not be higher and the stage is set for a truly sensational Shanghai showcase.

Martin Ragginger of Team Eagle grabbed pole position for Round 2 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.Craft Nexus Racing’s Earl Bamber was second quickest in the qualifying session.

Ragginger Takes Victory after Epic Battle in ShanghaiShanghai. Team Eagle’s

Martin Ragginger took victory in Round 2 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia today after an epic battle with series newcomer Earl Bamber of Craft Nexus Racing. Third across the line was LKM Racing Team’s Keita Sawa of Japan, ahead of Team Carrera Cup Asia guest driver Darryl O’Young, entered by Porsche Centre Shanghai Pudong, who defended well from a hard-charging Rodolfo Avila of Team Jebsen in what was a thrilling climax to the race.

Basetex Racing’s Zhang Da Sheng had to settle for sixth place after Avila got by him in the closing stages of the 12-lap race, followed home by Team C&D’s Jason Zhang Zhiqiang.

In Class B, Mentos Racing’s Egidio Perfetti converted his pole position into an impressive victory, crossing the line 10th overall and increasing his points lead at the top of the category leaderboard. Second in the class was OpenRoad Racing’s Christian Chia, followed by Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan.

After two races, Ragginger has a lead of eight points over Bamber, with Sawa in third, four points adrift. In Class B, Perfetti has a 12-point lead over Nexus Racing’s Alif Hamdan and Tan who are tied

in second. After celebrating on the 2013 FORMULA

1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX podium, Ragginger commented: “The start was not optimum. Earl got past, but after the third lap I could get by him again and keep the gap, even though he closed it a little bit. It’s good for us to have the points again and we’ll be looking for the same tomorrow. You never know [if you are going to have the chance to pass], but I saw that Earl had a little bit of a bad exit. I was able to overtake him, this time on the outside, which surprised me a little but I think I played fair.”

Bamber pulled off the strong getaway he’d been hoping for, saying: “It was an amazing start and one of our strong points so far this season. It was good to lead for a few laps, and then I followed Martin and learned a little bit which I hope to apply tomorrow. When he got past I thought he was going to run away, but I managed to maintain the pace and I’m really happy with that.”

As the lights went out, Bamber got a blinding start, powering past Ragginger and grabbing the lead to a roar of approval from the thousands-strong Shanghai crowd. Sawa tried to follow through to grab second, but the Austrian closed the door. O’Young was hot on the tail of the race leaders, but behind him Zhang Da Sheng fought his way past Avila to seize fifth position.

As the 25-strong field thundered through the first few turns, the crowds were treated to a display of fantastic fair, close GT racing at its finest.

At the front of the pack, Bamber and Ragginger began pulling away, the young New Zealand driver unable to shake the

experienced Porsche racer despite setting the fastest lap of the race on Lap 2. At the end of the second lap, Bamber had managed to claw a half-second advantage from his rival, and was defending brilliantly. Two laps later, however, Ragginger got alongside and managed to dive past Bamber with a perfectly-executed move. Next it was his turn to try and pull away, but Bamber fought hard, with Ragginger eventually crossing the line just over a second in front.

Lap seven of the action-packed race saw Perfetti close up to Team Betterlife driver Wang Jian Wei of China, while Nexus Racing’s Alif Hamdan, who had been second in Class B, made a mistake and dropped down the order.

Behind Ragginger and Bamber, Sawa had his work cut out defending from a determined O’Young until Avila got by Zhang Da Sheng and took the fight to the former Team Jebsen driver. Further down the order, an epic battle had developed between Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget of France, Wang and Perfetti, with Perfetti getting by Wang on lap 10.

Ragginger crossed the line to take his second consecutive victory followed by Bamber and Sawa, and O’Young taking fourth from Avila by just eight tenths of a second.

Round 3 of the Porsche Carrera Cup will be run over 12-laps of the Shanghai International Circuit just prior to the start of the 2013 FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX.

Ragginger Extends Points Advantage with Third Successive VictoryShanghai. Team Eagle’s

Martin Ragginger rounded off a perfect weekend at the 2013 FORMULA 1 UBS CHINESE GRAND PRIX by taking his third successive victory in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. His trio of wins, and perfect record of pole positions, gives him a strong lead at the top of the championship points table but series newcomer, Earl Bamber of Craft Nexus Racing, continued his impressive debut with his second runner-up finish of the weekend. Third across the line was Macau’s Rodolfo Avila of Team Jebsen, who made a scorching getaway off the grid and powered his way to a podium finish.

In Class B, it was Mentos Racing’s Egidio Perfetti who took the toughest victory of his career so far, simultaneously attacking and defending in what was a frenzied – but fair – 12 laps on the 5.4km Shanghai International Circuit. Perfetti took the Class B win and eighth

overall, with Dorr McElrea Racing’s Yuey Tan second in the category and OpenRoad Racing’s Christian Chia taking the final podium spot.

Ragginger now has a ten point lead over closest challenger Bamber on the championship leaderboard, with LKM Racing Team’s Keita Sawa in third, two points clear of Avila. In the chase for Class B honours, Perfetti is 14 points ahead of Tan, who jumps to second after the Shanghai double header, with Malaysian newcomer Alif Hamdan third.

For Ragginger, it was an ideal weekend, but the Porsche ace is aware the competition is only going to get more fierce as the season continues: “I still have to work a little on my start, even after so many years there’s still need for improvement. The car was very good right from the beginning and I felt very confident in it. Today I put on a little bit more pressure and a lot of pressure in the first couple of laps. After I made it past I could pull away a little, but still kept pushing throughout the race.”

Although Bamber had to settle for second again, he knows victory is well within grasp: “The start was absolutely fantastic, and a really great battle for the first couple of laps. Today I didn’t quite have the pace and knew it would be tough as we’re on older tyres.

We’re moving forward, with two second places, so maybe we’ll get a win in Zhuhai.”

For Avila, it was a great end to a tough weekend: “We had good race pace, and a big improvement from Sepang and yesterday. We’re quickly catching up, but still have some work to do both on the car and on me as a driver. I really think I can close the gap to the leaders, especially compared to how I felt when the weekend started.”

Perfetti was exhausted after an epic race: “Lots of battles! Quite a clean race but a lot of being passed and then overtaking. I had some problems on the back strait, that’s where the guys were catching up to me, but at the double left I got them back.”

As he had in Round 2, Bamber shot off the start like a rocket, grabbing the lead from pole-man Ragginger. Sawa also got away well and was challenging the Austrian for second when Avila saw his chance and dived past. Basetex Racing’s Zhang Da Sheng was on the tail of Avila chased by Budweiser Kamlung Racing’s Tung Ho-Pin who was sandwiched between him and Team Carrera Cup Asia’s Darryl O’Young. continued to page 7

continued from page 6In the high-speed battle, the three were so close that contact between Zhang and Tung set of a chain reaction which saw O’Young and Zhang Da Sheng spin, with the Hong Kong driver retiring. Zhang Da Sheng made an impressive recovery to fight back through the field, eventually crossing the line in seventh.

Back at the head of the field, Ragginger was pilling the pressure on to his rival, with Bamber once again defending superbly. At the end of the opening lap though, Ragginger remained glued to this bumper, making his move on Lap 2 and seizing the lead.

Team Yongda Dongfang’s Benjamin Rouget and Zhang Zhiqiang of Team C&D were in a crowd-thrilling battle for sixth, when Tung spun ahead of them and rejoined behind the battling pair, keeping his distance as they fought tooth and claw. Lap six saw Zhang Zhiqiang run into the back of Rouget for which he was handed a drive-through penalty.

Perfetti closed in on Kamlung Racing’s Peter Li Zhi Cong, getting by on Lap 6 and then pulling away in front. However, a lap later he had Zhang Da Sheng, Zhang Zhiqiang and Li swarming all over him, defending well until Zhang got the better of him on Lap 8, and Zhang Zhiqiang took his drive through penalty. Li took the fight to Perfetti, who firmly closed the door.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia truly shone at China’s most prestigious motorsport weekend, treating the crowds to an unforgettable weekend of thrilling GT competition from its talented international field.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be back in action next month at the Zhuhai International Circuit in China’s Pearl River Delta, for Rounds 4 and 5.

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia quote of the weekend:

“I still have to work a little on my start, even after so many years there’s still need for improvement. The car was very good right from the begin-ning and I felt very confident in it.”

- Martin Ragginger
