Welcome to St. Rose
Did you know that the Council Vatican II declared that
―The use of the Latin language, with due respect to
particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites‖? At
St. Rose, it is certainly the case. However, you may not
be used to Latin so it will take you some time to get
familiar with the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.
We provide you with some brief indications below but
do not hesitate to ask for help. St. Rose Latin Mass
Chaplaincy is a Catholic community established by the
Bishop of Springfield in the fall of 2008.
On Sunday, you may follow Mass with a red booklet
(pews) and a Proper leaflet (vestibule). Hymnals are also
available for Sung Masses (vestibule). On Weekdays,
you need a daily Latin -English Missal to follow Mass.
They are available at Poppe‘s (1886 Maine, Quincy).
You may also follow the ordinary with a red booklet.
There are collection or donation envelopes available in
pews and vestibule for visitors. If you wish to receive a
tax receipt or/and be kept informed on the life and
activities of our community at St. Rose, make sure you
give us your name and address. To join the chaplaincy,
call the church office.
On Sunday, please do come to the hall after Mass to
meet the community. Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Chaplain’s Desk: Quinquagesima & Lent
Lent is around the corner (Ash Wednesday). It is time to
reflect on what will be our particular penance and
mortification this year. I invite you to read the message for
Lent of the Holy Father and read again the rules for fasting
and abstinence in the Lenten insert to this bulletin. Consider
to practice some of the following suggestions besides the
minimum of fasting and abstinence imposed by the Church.
• Prayer— In prayer, we encounter and walk with God.
During the Lenten season, we are encouraged to make
opportunities for individual and common prayer.
Opportunities for prayer can include attending daily Mass,
praying within the family, visiting churches to pray before the
Blessed Sacrament, prayerfully reading the Bible, reciting the
rosary, meditating the Stations of the Cross.
• Almsgiving—This penitential practice entails giving money
or other resources for the benefit of those in need. One
possible source of this money is that which has been saved
from fasting or other means of self-denial.
• The Practice of Charity "Which Covers a Multitude of
Sins" (1 Pt 4:8)—Motivated by love for God and for one's
neighbor, we express solicitude through various works for
those who are in need, especially the poor, the sick, the
underprivileged, the aged, the lonely, the imprisoned, the
discouraged, the bedridden, and the overburdened.
• Works of Mercy—Through charitable actions we express
compassionate care for others by easing their burdens and
attending to their bodily and spiritual needs.
• Stations of the Cross—This popular devotional practice
was developed in order to permit those who could not make a
pilgrimage to the Holy Land to follow in the steps of Jesus
along his journey from judgment to burial. Catholics
throughout the centuries have paused to pray the Stations of
the Cross, especially during the Lenten season.
Sample Expressions of Penance:
• Efforts at reconciliation with a family member or neighbor
• Tears of repentance
• Concern for the salvation of our sisters and brothers
• Prayer to the saints for their intercession
• Patient acceptance of the cross we must bear to be faithful to
Christ
• Defense of justice and right
• Admission of faults to God and to one another
• Mutual correction
• Offer and acceptance of forgiveness
• Endurance of persecution for the sake of God's kingdom
• Development of a spirit of penance
• Witness to a Christian way of life
