Poplar Street Conversion Project Purpose

• Make Uptown easier to navigate in this area. • One-way street systems can be:

– Confusing– Can lead to unnecessarily longer driving in the search

of parking or destinations.

• Converting some of Uptown’s one-way streets to two-way will:– Improve the street network – Reduce congestion and air pollution– Reduce pedestrian conflicts and motorist confusion

Poplar Street Conversion General Information

• City project will convert Poplar Street from 3rd St. to 6th St. from one-way to two-way.

• County project has already converted Mint Street from MLK Jr Blvd to Trade St from one-way to two-way.

• Mint Street is projected to carry the majority of the traffic (2,500 vpd up to 5,500 vpd).

• Poplar Street is projected to have a decrease in traffic (5,000 vpd down to 2,000 vpd).

• Staff have completed a design concept.

• Types of improvements:- Curb radii modifications, - Wheelchair ramp improvements- Repaving and restriping- Addition of traffic signals for two-way flow.

• No projected changes to Presbyterian Daycare loading or on-street parking next Settler’s Cemetery.

Poplar Street Conversion Timeline

• Planning & Design phase= 12 months (current phase)

• Bid phase= 6 months

• Land Acquisition phase= 9 months (could be shorter because most improvements are in existing City right of way)

• Construction phase= 3 months

• Project Completion= Completed by Spring 2014
