July, 2013
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I recently heard someone use the following phrase, “It’s time for
your bottom lip to touch your top lip!” My first reaction was to
chuckle thinking to myself, “That’s a good way to put it.”
But then, on a more serious note, I thought about the damage our
words can do to another person. Our words can mock and belittle.
They can bear false witness and destroy reputations. Our words
can crush and break hearts; leaving life-long scars and pain. I
would submit to you that our words can cause a great deal more
pain and damage to another than a punch in the nose or jaw. I
have seen it time and time again as I have worked with people in
their lives.
James tells us, in his Epistle, that the tongue is by
far the hardest part of our body to control. In
Matthew 12:34 Jesus says this about the words that
come out of our mouth,
“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
In short, Jesus is saying your words reveal what is in your heart.
Angry words reveal an angry heart. Prideful words reveal a
prideful heart. Bitter words reveal a bitter heart. Hateful words
reveal a hateful heart…etc. Are any of these of The Lord?
Jesus’ words revealed love, mercy, forgiveness, tenderness,
gentleness, patience and a lot more good stuff, all of which
reflected what His heart was about. You and I are commanded in
faith to be Christ-like. Consider what that means for how you use
your tongue.

Interestingly, Christ goes on to say in Matthew 12:36-37 the following:
But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every empty word
they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be
condemned.”
We should use the words of James daily in prayer, “Lord, teach me to be quick to listen, slow to speak
and slow to become angry. Let my words honor You and be led by Your Spirit and Your Truth. Let my
words help others and cause no harm. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

HEALTH HINTS – Wynne Kenat, Parish Nurse
Be Cool! Summer is here! We waited a long while for the warmth of summer and now it is upon us! What's summer without outdoor activities? But hot humid days---especially when there's little breeze---can make it difficult for your body to dissipate excess heat. Physical activity combined with excessive perspiration and inadequate fluid intake can cause heat illness. Alcohol consumption, heart disease, and some medications also may contribute to heat illness, especially heat stroke. Though heat exhaustion and heat stroke have related causes, they're distinctly different in symptoms and level of urgency.
To help prevent heat illness, follow these guidelines: 1) Wear light, loose-fitting clothes in hot weather. 2) Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. 3) Improve your ventilation by opening a window or using a fan or air conditioning. 4) Recognize early symptoms of heat illness such as headache, nausea or vomiting, low or elevated blood pressure, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat or faintness. 5) Reduce your activity until symptoms disappear.
Have fun this summer, enjoy the beauty of God's creation, and STAY COOL!!

BOARD OF STEWARDSHIP
Taken from Portals of Prayer Tuesday, June 4, 2013 Please read Ecclesiastes 12 and Psalm 37:27-40
The end of the matter; all has been heard.
Fear God and keep His commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man. Eccl.12:13
WHAT ARE WE TO DO? Job descriptions are never as complete as we'd like them to be. Most include the phrase "other duties as assigned." That means there is more to the job than the description can show. Did you know that we, as Christians, have job descriptions? "Fear God and keep His commandments." That's our job description as those created by God. What are we to do? Fear God and keep His commandments. While not incredibly descriptive, it's fairly clear. Jesus fills out the job listing a little more when He says, "Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." (John 13:34) Being a Christian means that we love one another. To fulfill the job description, we love one another as Jesus loves us. Forgiveness, grace and mercy fill every aspect of our Christian work. But our job is not yet done. If our hearts are still beating, we are still working. We still have other duties as assigned. There are still other people in our lives whom we can love with the love of Jesus. The Holy Spirit continues to strengthen our faith and give us the tools to love. Gracious God, thank You for choosing me to work for You. Help me to love just as You have loved me. Amen

BOOK GROUP Book Group Tuesday, July 9, 2013, Church Library at 5:30 p.m We have selected And Then There Were None also known as Ten Little Indians by Agatha Christie. This is some nice, light reading for the summer. This mystery novel is regarded by most critics to be Agatha Christie’s masterpiece. Ten bodies are found by Scotland Yard inspectors on a deserted island—ten murder victims, yet no murderer in sight! The murderer has to be on the island, but who is it? We will discuss this novel on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in our church library at 5:30 p.m. Bring your own dinner and beverage. We must be neat.
Please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex so we know how many are coming. Bring questions on this novel and suggestions for our next book selection. Questions? Call Linda Haberkost at 330-864-7197.
