TRAIL Living Lab
• Based at University of Ulster • First Living Lab in Northern Ireland (2007)
• Engaging with local communities and enterprises to design co-creative solutions
• From linear model to networked model
• Cycles of innovation activity
• Triple Helix partnerships
![Page 4: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Health Service
• Major change in care provision, outlined in ‘Transforming Your Care’ document in December 2011
![Page 5: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Reablement
• Supporting people such as the elderly to live in their own homes whilst providing a programme underpinning the skills and confidence necessary for daily living
• Rollout of reablement services in Belfast providing interventions for older city dwellers
![Page 6: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
![Page 7: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Reablement requirements
• Innovation in service design • Technology development to support the
intervention
![Page 8: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Project structure
• Funded by Innovation Vouchers (£4K each) • Competitive bid to Invest NI, our regional
economic development agency • Social enterprises applied as a pool
(Ardmonagh Family and Community Group, Engage with Age, Volunteer Now, Oasis Caring in Action, and Shopmobility Belfast)
![Page 9: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Project structure
• We subcontracted 20% of pool total to the Belfast Hackerspace, Farset Labs
![Page 10: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Project plan
• Ideation events • Hackathons • Capture user stories • Agile software development • Validation by stakeholders • Scale up
![Page 11: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

![Page 13: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Research questions
• Explore if the location context and mix of participants created a beneficial effect in the process of capturing the needs of the stakeholders. Specifically, – Does this kind of experimental co-creation process
support ideation, and how? – How does the creation of a ‘pop-up’ living lab that
brings together the triple-helix of partners - plus users work?
![Page 14: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Triple-Helix Configurations
![Page 15: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Rationale – triple-helix
![Page 16: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Rationale – triple-helix
![Page 17: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
So what could a successful pathway look like?
• coders and carers • ideation events • mix the blend • harmonise towards user stories • hack user interfaces • build stakeholder community
![Page 18: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Ideation outcomes
• Data capture • Data sharing • Service Directory • Governance • Assessment model
![Page 19: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Conclusions
• Experimental co-creation process does support ideation
• Empowering heterogeneous groups of people from different domains of knowledge and levels of expertise to ideate freely and generate new knowledge
• Leads to an improvement in the appropriateness and quality of the resulting service design
![Page 20: Pop-up Living Labs: Experiments in Co-creating Service Design with Diverse Stakeholders in Hackerspace Communities](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060110/555c1acbd8b42ad27e8b571f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
