These tabs can easily be distinguished from steel pop tabs using a few simple tests. Common Steel Items: Pet food cans, tuna cans, soup cans, vegetable cans. Steel is heavier than aluminum and much harder to bend. Use a magnet. If the pop tab is steel, it will cling to the magnet. If it is aluminum, it will not. Common Aluminum Items: Drink cans, such as energy drinks or soda cans. Aluminum is light in the palm of your hand and easier to bend. Take a key and press down on the pop tab with it.
