Avril Lavigne is another female artist who falls under the genre or pop-rock. I am going to analysis her music video for 'My Happy Ending' in terms of typical conventions for the pop-rock genre and compare it to P!nk- you and your hand music video.

Mise-en-scene Costume Both artists wear very unique outfits in their videos. This is a typical convention for the pop-rock genre. The costumes all give of different connotations which fit with the theme/mood of the video.

Black gives the connotations of being emptiness and coldness. These connotations are reinforced by the running acting suggesting that she is running away from something.

Red gives the connotations of danger and fire. These fit in with the story being told in the video about ‘Lady Delish’ being independent women with a fiery personality and not needing a man.

Instruments

In Avril Lavigne My Happy Ending there are shots of the artist playing the instruments used in the song, this is a typical convention for the pop-rock genre. P!nk’s You and Your Hand does not follow this convention as it is a televised bard which is telling a story compared to Avril Lavigne’s My Happy Ending which is more of a commercial exhibitionist.

Google defines pop-rock as “a music genre which mixes a catchy pop style, of light lyrics, in its (typically) guitar-based rock songs. There are varying definitions of the term, ranging from a slower and mellower form of rock music to a subgenre of pop music.” Other conventions of the pop-rock music genre include an individualist clothing style that contains a lot of black and very bright colours and there are usually shots of the artist playing the given musical instrument used in the song.

musicBoth songs fit into the genre of pop-rock as they have a distinct beat which work with the lyrics to produce a typical pop-rock sound. Both songs have emphasis on the chorus as this is the main message of the songs. This is also typical of the pop-rock genre. The used of a range of instruments in the songs also fit into the given genre.
