Pontian is a district in southwest Johor. The

name of Pontian transformed from a Malay word "Perhentian" which means a stop.

It is located 62 km from Johor Bahru, the state capital of Johor, Malaysia. It is also located at 37th Miles from Johor Bahru. The name Pontian is also used in the names of two towns in the district, Pontian Besar and Pontian Kechil, of which the latter serves as its district capital. The capital was formerly a fishing village which has developed into a small town.

Pontian is noted for its variety of seafood which is sold at a reasonable price. Visitors from neighbouring towns and Singaporean regularly visit Kukup, a fishing village about 20 km from Pontian Kechil.

In this book, I am doing on the theme “Spaces and People”, and my topic is “Fishy Men”.

The reason why I named this book as “Fishy Men” is because the spaces I have visited are fishy so I named the people there as “Fishy Men”.

6.00 A.M., 10 MAY 2015, KUKUP FISHING VILLAGEThe fisherman was preparing to sea when the tide set in. Before his journey to sea, he observed the weather to avoid storm during the period he launch out. Unfortunately, it was not a clear day. Depress.


6.30 A.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PARIT RAMBAI


Fisherman, Pak Saleh was checking his boat’s engine. Cautious.

Fishermen, Pak Iman and his friends before their launch out. Hoping a safe and foison journey. Cheerful.

6.30 A.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PARIT RAMBAIFishermen, Pak Azman and his friend were launching out after setting down all of their tools. Hopeful.


7.00 A.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PARIT RAMBAIFisherman leaving the port. Sailing to the destination he wanted to fish. Energized.

Pak Faiz and his son were coming back from sea with variety of prawns.

His son has been followed his father as a fisherman since he was 16. He was differentiating the sizes and breeds of the prawns. Glad.

12.00 P.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PARIT RAMBAIFishermen just coming back from the sea and were tidying up their stuffs before they send the fish to the market.


12.30 P.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PONTIAN KECHIL Fisherman were unloading the fishes from their boat to a truck to send the fishes to market for bidding. They were passing the fishes from one to another like a relay. Cooperative.

Fishermen, Pak Ridzuan and his friends were unloading the catch from their boat to a truck to send the fresh fishes to the wet market. Busy.

Pak Ridzuan was showing the fish they have caught. It was a rewarding day for them. Glad.


12.45 P.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PONTIAN KECHIL Fisherman was washing or cleaning his boat. This is really a tough job as he has to rinse his body under the water and rush to clean the boat before the ebb. Busy.

1.15 P.M., 17 MAY 2015,WET MARKET PONTIAN KECHIL

Fishmonger, Mr. Liaw was weighting the chosen fish for his customer to tell them the price of it. He started to be a fishmonger since he was 20. Earnest.


1.30 P.M., 17 MAY 2015, WET MARKET PONTIAN KECHIL Fishmongers are bidding the fish to the people. Busy.

Salty fish stall. Some of the small fishes will be salted and dried in the sun to make salty fish. This is always a best traditional way to preserve the fishes. Wisdom.

Salty fish staller, Mrs. Tan was a typical fisherman’s wife. They started this business as his husband, Mr. Tan will always bring back many fishes from the sea. That will be a waste if they are not able to sell out all of the fishes. So, they made them into salty fish to preserve the fishes for a longer period and sell them. Cheerful.


4.30 P.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PARIT RAMBAIFisherman was repairing his boat by using some fiber sheets. Skilled.

Fisherman, Mr. Lee is an elder fisherman. He is now 82 years old and he still insists to launch out although his children tried to stop him. He started to be a fisherman since he was 12 with his uncles. He was checking the petrol box before he launch out. Determined.

4.30 P.M., 17 MAY 2015, PORT PARIT RAMBAIThese are some tools to fix the nets found in Mr. Lee’s house.

Fisherman, Tuk Jang was coming to the port to observe the tide with his motorcycle. By observing the tide, he decides the time he launch out. Cautious.



Some nets were hung out to be dried in the sun beside of the port.

Some fishing tools were found in Pak Zain’s store room beside the port.


Fisherman, Pak Zain was observing the tide and weather to decide whether it was a good day to sail at that night.

This book is introducing Pontian with her fishing villages, ports and wet market. This coffee table book is basically talking about the fishermen, fishmongers and the people who are related to fish. There is an untold relationship between them and this has tied them together. By reading this book, you may feel like travelling to Pontian for a whole day.
