Take a survey in your class and ask the students to respond to two questions: (1)“Describe in detail when you feel exceptionally good about your college.”(2)“Describe in detail when you feel exceptionally bad about your college.”Classify the underlying factors according to Herzberg’s two factor theory and discuss the implications of your findings..

Herzberg’s two factor theory..

• Psychologist Frederick Herzberg proposed the two factor theory – also called the motivation- hygiene theory..

• Herzberg emphasized that the opposite of satisfaction is not dissatisfaction. Removing dissatisfying characteristics from a job does not make the job satisfying..

Contd. Herzberg’s two factor theory..

• He proposed that his findings indicated the existence of a dual continuum: the opposite of “satisfaction” is “no satisfaction” and the opposite of “dissatisfaction” is “no dissatisfaction”.

• According to Herzberg, the factors that lead to motivation are separate and distinct from those that lead to dissatisfaction..
