What do Kenyans feel about Polygamy/Polyandry?

What are the reasons behind their support or lack thereof?

What is the gender and age composition in both sides of the divide?

Does gender/age have any influence on what one supports?


• About half of the respondents were 21-22 years old, with the average age being 26.

• 61% of the respondents were males

• More than two thirds of the respondents – 73% - do not support polygamy in Kenya

• Only about 2% of the respondents support polyandry

• Lineage expansion• Practical solution to infidelity, reducing diseases• Strike a balance - there are more women than men• Promotes industriousness in men

Some of the reasons for NOT supporting polygamy…


We have established the gender and age composition of the respondents as well as the proportions of those that are for and against polygamy and polyandry.

We proceed to establish the relationship between these characteristics and the support for polygamy/polygamy

Findings:


• 82% of the female respondents do not support polygamy while 67% of the males are opposed.

• There is a higher proportion of males that support polygamy as compared to females

• None of the female respondents supports polyandry with only 4% of the male respondents being for it.

• There is no statistically significant relationship between gender and support for polygamy/Polyandry

• Similarly, age does not determine whether one supports polygamy or not

• The decision to support polygamy/Polyandry is totally independent of these two variables.

• For these conclusions to hold, we have held variables like income, urbanity/place of residence, level of education etc. constant

• Additional research will need to be carried out with these variables factored in and develop a regression model to better explain polygamy
