ARCHITECTURE OF THE SONOROUS 2013ARCI591: Thesis ProjectSupervisors: Simon Twose + Natasha Perkins

The brief was to design a Glamorous Camping structure for the Ngã Põtiki Reserve, South Wairarapa. The design response utilises architecture as an extension of our auditory perception. The design operates as a lens or device that brings sonic aspects of site and occupation into focus by enhancing our sensory abilities. By countering familiar expectations of how landscape is understood it must be re-evaluated, forcing a more conscious awareness of what is being experienced.

Rather than presenting the view of landscape this design engages with its surroundings through manipulating the site’s soundscape, reintroducing auditory awareness to experiences of landscape and architecture. By prioritising sound over vision the project investigates how sonic considerations can invite participatory engagement between occupant and site, shifting architecture from a frame through which landscape is viewed to a framework within which landscape is experienced.

A Conversation Between the Apartment and the Street

In order to support intensification along Cuba St more residential developments will be required. While the design of these buildings should create a pleasant environment for the residents they also need to acknowledge their urban context. The design should also have a responsibility to create a pleasant an engaging environment for users of the street.

The aim of this design is to create a residential development that doesn’t present a blank face to the street but interacts and contributes to its urban surroundings. The built form should integrate and engage with its surroundings to positively contribute to the atmosphere of the area. This primary motivation developed as a reaction against residential developments that in no way engage with their urban environment, creating unpleasant spaces for other users of the city, specifically the façade of the building on the opposite side of Leeds St.

While this can be achieved by placing retail tenancies along the ground floor to allow for pedestrian engagement the residential units themselves can also contribute to their surroundings. Glimpses into semi-private spaces such as courtyards allows for interaction between the building and the city. Visibility into some of the living areas through the use of elements such as inhabited window boxes and rooftop gardens also show signs of the building’s entire function to the street.

AXO1 Deck Construction

The construction of the decks leading out of the apartments allow for a transition from public to private, creating a privacy gradient along the edge of the apartments. The blind at the end of the decks allows for this area to either become an extension of the interior space or bring the outside atmosphere into the apartments. The detailing transition between the apartments was detailed to be as level as possible, enhancing the smooth transition. The flush surfaces were carried through to the detailing of the balustrade and blind covering.

LIVE|DISPLAY 2012

ARCI 311: DesignTutor: Mark Leong

This home and gallery space is designed for the owner of a vast array of domestic objects who wishes to display them for public viewing. Some of the object’s on display are lived or used objects as they are present in the home, the gallery affording glimpses into it. Others are ‘artificial’ or ‘staged’ on display in the main gallery space. Both programmes are visually accessible from each other but never physically accessible, intersecting along boundary walls with shared surfaces or items.

The design aims to explore the domestic interior and gallery spaces as platforms for display and performance that simultaneously contain and expose. Both of these places can be areas in which people wish to be seen in order to project a certain image of themselves.

EARTHQUAKE MUSEUM 2011

ARCI 312: Integrated DesignTutor: Anne Kelly

The brief was to design a museum on the Wellington waterfront that provided a memorial for earthquakes that have occurred in New Zealand as well as exhibition and education spaces for the public.

An earthquake or any natural disaster strips away at a community until only its core is left, it is revealing about the character of the community and the stability of our built environment. The museum expresses this aspect of the earthquake by having walkways that strip down along the sides of the museum and spread across the site, acting as access ways to draw people in to the heart of the museum. The memorial is placed along these walkways so that people must remember what was lost before proceeding to the exhibition spaces. The exterior memorial spaces will be accessible to the public at any time of day, allowing the museum to fulfil this function at all times and integrate with the surroundings.

MUSIC SCHOOL 2011ARCI 312: Integrated DesignTutor: Fabricio Chicca

Harmony in music is composed of consonant and dissonant sounds, a balance between the stable and unstable, temporary or transitional moments. There is a playoff and interchange between these pleasant and unpleasant moments reflecting the often difficult academic pursuit of the creative arts.

The Music School is an exploration of the interaction between the stable and unstable moments and the underlying tension between the two. The school is composed of two distinct wings that pull away from each other, not quite touching at a moment of tension down the centre

The architecture is at its most unstable around the atrium, the main transitional space in the building where the structure intrudes into the space. As the spaces radiate out from this transitional area into the teaching spaces the architecture becomes more regular and stable reflecting the interplay between in music between these two sounds.
