Kahl, Chad M. International Relations, International Security, and Comparative Politics: A Guideto Reference and Information Sources. Westport, CT: Libraries Unlimited, 2008.VKC Library [Reference] Z6461 .K34 2008

Understanding world politics has never been easy, but the more closely we approach the ideal of the global

village, the more complex its socioeconomic and legal entanglements become. From the rise of China's

growth in trade status, to ever growing tensions in the Middle East, ripple effects impact both country and

community. Focusing on both print and Internet resources published between 1990 and 2006, the author

covers such timely topics as human rights, public opinion and polling, arms control, treaties, and terrorism.

Over 900 annotated entries cover the major sources, as well as harder-to-find specialized items. For

academic and research library collections, as well as faculty members in political science and the

diplomatic arts. The research guide includes a chapter devoted to women in politics.

Vogel, Ronald K. Handbook of Research on Urban Politics and Policy in the United States.Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1997.VKC Library [Bookstacks] HT110 .H36 1997

A comprehensive reference work which provides a way to access research on urban politics and policy in

the United States. The handbook consists of twenty-nine bibliographic essays that describe the various

subfields and the relevant literature. Experts in the field guide readers through major controversies, while

evaluating and assessing the subfields of urban politics and policy. Each chapter follows the same basic

organization with topics such as methodological and theoretical issues, current states of the field, and

directions for future research. This work provides a starting place to guide the reader to the most important

works in a particular subfield and a context to place their work in a larger body of knowledge. The

handbook provides a wealth of information and allows quick identification of existing academic knowledge

and research relevant to the problem at hand.

DICTIONARIES

Bealey, Frank. The Blackwell Dictionary of Political Science: A User's Guide to Its Terms.Malden, MA: Blackwell Publishers, 1999.VKC Library [Bookstacks]; Leavey Library [Lower Commons] JA61 .B43 1999

The Blackwell Dictionary of Political Science provides students and general readers with a clear

introduction to the terminology of political science. The book comprises definitions and explanations of

around 1000 key terms presented in an engaging style, cross-referenced, and easily accessible to readers

new to the subject. It also includes a section of short biographies of the most eminent writers in the

discipline–both classical and modern. The book is unique in combining a single author's overview and

minimal assumptions about the reader's prior knowledge of the discipline. This dictionary is invaluable as

a reference tool, providing an essential introduction to what it means to think politically.

Collin, P. H., ed. Dictionary of Government and Politics. 3 edition. London: Bloomsbury, 2004.rd

Electronic Book, JA61 .C65 2004ebThe Dictionary of Government and Politics, now in its third edition, covers the broadly defined fields of

government and politics and that which affects them; it includes wide-ranging definitions of national

legislatures, elections, local government, parliamentary and council procedures, intra-national affairs, and

political parties and political theories. A feature of this second edition is a phonetic pronunciation guide

for all headwords, of which there are now more than 8,000. Definitions include both quotations and

examples. A special supplement covers and explains the differences between the political and legislative

systems in the United States and Great Britain; thus, the Dictionary not only defines government and

politics but provides comparisons of the political systems and government structures of the two countries.

Hill, Kathleen and Gerald N. Hill. The Facts on File Dictionary of American Politics. New York:Checkmark Books, 2001. VKC Library [Reference] JK9 .H54 2001

This dictionary includes more than 1,600 up-to-date entries that concisely define American politics

terminology. The book also includes appendices providing the full text to important American documents

such as the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, biographical profiles of the presidents and vice

presidents, and election results.

Hoffman, John. A Glossary of Political Theory. Edinburgh, Scotland: Edinburgh University Press,2007.VKC Library [Reference] JA65 .H64 2007

This essential reference covers alphabetically both the major concepts in political theory and the key

writers in the field. While ensuring accuracy and objectivity, the entries represent interpretations that are

both challenging and interesting. The premise underlying the book is that politics cannot be studied without

theory, and for students, the more concrete and relevant the theory, the better. Presenting theory in an

abstract fashion makes it daunting for students who can find it difficult to see the links between theory and

practice. The definitions in this glossary, therefore, relate political ideas to political realities (i.e. everyday

controversies) in an attempt to make them as accessible as possible. Terms have been selected based upon

the concepts most regularly used in teaching.

McLean, Iain, ed. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Politics. 2 ed. New York: Oxford Universitynd

Press, 2003.VKC Library [Bookstacks]; Leavey Library [Lower Commons] JA61 .C665 2003x

Written by an expert team of political scientists, sociologists, philosophers, and political economists, this

is the most authoritative and up-to-date dictionary of politics available. Containing over 1,500 entries

ranging from John Adams and Young Hegelians to Additional Member System and zero-sum game, this

comprehensive and entertaining work offers international coverage of major political institutions, thinkers,

and concepts. All significant political thinkers and designers of political institutions in the West are

included, and special attention is give to Muslim and Chinese political thought. There are many entries on

new and thriving branches of the subject, such as international political economy, voting theory, and

feminism. The Dictionary also gives clear and precise definitions of technical terms such as Condorcet

winner, Droop quota, and ultra vires, and includes an appendix of political leaders for a wide range of

countries and international institutions.

Levine, Andrew. Political Keywords: A Guide for Students, Activists, and Everyone Else. Malden,MA: Blackwell Pub., 2007.VKC Library [Bookstacks] JA61 .L48 2007

Recent history has seen profound change in the world's political landscape. With these changes, many

formerly secure understandings of political terms have become lost, and the meanings of the words we use

to describe our politics have become muddied. Frequently confusing, and often intentionally misleading,

this language can be easily distorted in order to spin disputed ideas or justify questionable actions. At the

same time, fresh insights about modern politics have been developed that remain little known or discussed

outside academic circles. This account of political keywords addresses these circumstances with a view

to rectifying them– for the benefit of students, political activists, and a public desperately in need of clarity.

The entries in this work create a timely dictionary of contemporary political vernacular from 'alienation'

to 'Zionism.' Extensive cross-referencing, suggested further readings, and a comprehensive glossary make

this an ideal guide to navigating a landscape of vague terms.

Robertson, David. The Routledge Dictionary of Politics. 3 ed. New York: Routledge, 2004.rd

VKC Library [Bookstacks]; Leavey Library [Bookstacks] JA61 .R63 2004Now in its third edition, this dictionary is the essential guide to politics; its terminologies, ideologies &

institutions. With over 500 entries, it provides authoritative and up-to-date information that is invaluable

to both students and general readers. Well over 500 extensive definitions provides an understanding of the

basics of political thought and theory The Dictionary includes clear coverage of complex ideologies and

dogmas and succinct definitions of highly specialized and technical terms. Coverage of emerging ideas,

terminologies and recent events within the world of politics, including entries on 'politically correct, ' war

crime tribunals, the Taliban and terrorism also comprise many of the entries.

Scruton, Roger. The Palgrave Macmillan Dictionary of Political Thought. 3 ed. New York:rd

Palgrave Macmillan, 2007.VKC Library [Bookstacks] JA61 .S37 2007

This new edition takes stock of the revolutionary political changes that have taken place since the

dictionary was first published in 1982, bringing the Dictionary right up to date. Some 1790 entries cover

every aspect of political thought, defining concepts and ideologies, surveying the arguments on issues,

giving capsule histories of political institutions, and summarizing (with newly expanded treatment) the

thought of major political theorists. The Dictionary provides a readable and impartial survey of political

thought, of immense value to students of political science, government, philosophy and jurisprudence as

well as to the general reader with an interest in ideas.

ENCYCLOPEDIAS

Carlisle, Rodney P., ed. Encyclopedia of Politics: The Left and the Right. 2 vols. Thousand Oaks,CA: Sage Publications, 2005.VKC Library [Bookstacks] JA61 .E54 2005

Although the distinction between the politics of the left and the right is commonly assumed in the media

and in treatments of political science and history, the terms are used so loosely that the student and the

general reader are often confused: What exactly are the terms left and right supposed to imply? This

two-volume Encyclopedia contains over 450 articles on individuals, movements, political parties, and

ideological principles, with those usually thought of as left in the left-hand volume (Volume 1), and those

considered on the right in the right-hand volume (Volume 2). Key themes found in the work include

countries and regions, “Isms,” laws, political movements, political parties, and political leaders.

Finkleman, Paul and Peter Wallenstein, eds. The Encyclopedia of American Political History.Washington, DC: Congressional Quarterly, 2001.VKC Library [Reference] E183 .E48 2001

This encyclopedia provides concise, readable, and informative entries written by academics and

independent scholars. A bibliography ends each entry. The volume includes essays on all U.S. presidents

and also has an excellent essay on think tanks, which strongly influence public policy. Historical

photographs and editorial cartoons accompany some entries. The foreword includes a descriptive time line

of political events in US history, divided into eras, such as "Jackson Era," "First New Deal," and "New

Frontier and Great Society." The appendix features a list of acronyms and abbreviations used by writers

and scholars. An excellent starting point for scholars, students, and general readers.

Krieger, Joel, ed. The Oxford Companion to Politics of the World. 2 ed. New York: Oxfordnd

University Press, 2001.VKC Library [Bookstacks]; Leavey Library [Lower Commons] JA61 .O95 2001

This new edition reflects the changing world with new articles on the people, concepts, and events that

have shaped the world since 1993. The second edition includes biographies of Kofi Annan, Tony Blair,

Bill Clinton, and Gerhard Schroder; articles on events such as the Rwandan Genocide and the war in

Kosovo; and coverage of international trade developments such as NAFTA and the World Trade

Organization. Eighty-seven of the 672 articles in the Second Edition are completely new; most others are

thoroughly revised. This work also features new articles, many critical issues written by influential figures.

Recognizing the importance of including varying viewpoints, the editors have commissioned these essays

to provide an informed and often passionate debate on controversial topics. Discussions include Lani

Guinier and Glenn Loury on Affirmative Action; Francis Fukuyama and Milton Fisk on the Limits of

Liberal Democracy; and Lloyd Axworthy and John Bolton on the United Nations. Contributors discuss

nearly every nation in the world, including extensive information on institutions, political parties, leaders,

and the sources of political mobilization and conflict. The volume includes biographies of more than

seventy-five political leaders who have shaped the contemporary political world. Articles include detailed

discussions of critical historical developments and events, concepts, international law, and organizations.

Encyclopedia of the World’s Nations and Cultures represents an extensive overhaul of the original

Encyclopedia of the World's Nations. It provides concise and objective descriptions of the dominant

political, economic, social, and cultural systems of the countries of the world. The encyclopedia features

193 country-by-country surveys in 40 separate categories, as well as maps, tables, charts, and lists that are

linked with narrative accounts of each nation's peoples, history, government, society, and culture. This

edition includes articles on three additional countries and 14 new sections on culture and society with each

entry. Both the text and the extensive statistical data have been fully updated.

Kurian, George Thomas, ed. World Encyclopedia of Parliaments and Legislatures. 2 vols.Washington, DC: Congressional Quarterly, 1998.VKC Library [Bookstacks] JF511 .W67 1998

Produced under the auspices of the Research Committee of Legislative Specialists, International Political

Science Association, and Commonwealth Parliamentary Society, this encyclopedia offers readers a timely

and inclusive survey of parliamentary systems containing 185 entries describing almost 200 national

assemblies; information is current through June 1997. An informative introductory essay outlines variations

in structure, character, influence, and purpose among parliamentary governments. These differences are

subsequently given greater detail in the country profiles. So far as possible contributors follow a standard

format for each country that includes the historical background of parliamentary development, organization

and procedures, the legislative process, elections, and parties. Not surprisingly the focus and length of

parliamentary profiles varies according to national history and the openness of political systems. Profiles

range in length from one to more than 15 pages. The work concludes with a collection of specialized essays

on selected themes (e.g., legislative committees, voting behavior, lobbying, minority members, the new

democracies of Central Europe) and essays on the UN General Assembly and the European Parliament.

Contributors include more than 90 experts in the field. The writing is clear and accessible and there is a

useful glossary.

Sheldon, Garrett Ward, ed. Encyclopedia of Political Thought. New York: Facts on File, 2001.VKC Library [Bookstacks] JA61 .E52 2001

present, that have influenced and shaped civilization. The Encyclopedia contains more than 400 fully cross-

referenced entries that provide an up-to-date survey of topics that have been crucial to the political history

of civilization, including the rise and fall of Communism, the advent of feminism, and the advancement

of democracy. Key concepts, controversial issues, and important political thinkers are clearly described

and analyzed, with examples from current events. Ideologies are not only placed in historical context but

related to contemporary politics. A chronology gives a linear presentation of the evolution of political

thinking.

previous essays from the first edition but updates essays for 86 subjects who continued to contribute to the

profession, and it adds 22 new persons who reflect more recent directions and controversies in research.

Those chosen were based on reputation, an examination of recent journals, and the theoretical significance

of their publications. The new edition includes presidents of the American Political Science Association
