Early Life Lal Bahadur stayed at his

grandfather's house till he wasten. By that time he had passedthe sixth standard examination.He went to Varanasi for highereducation. In 1921 whenMahatma Gandhi launched thenon-cooperation movementagainst British Government,Lal Bahadur Shastri, was onlyseventeen years old. WhenMahatma Gandhi gave a call tothe youth to come out ofGovernment schools and col-leges, offices and courts and tosacrifice everything for thesake of freedom, Lal Bahadurcame out of his school. Thoughhis mother and relativesadvised him not to do so, hewas firm in his decision. LalBahadur was arrested during

the Non-cooperation move-ment but as he was too young

he was let off.Political CarrierAfter Second World War

started in 1939, Congresslaunched "IndividualSatyagraha" in 1940 todemand freedom. Lal Bahadur

Shastri was arrested dur-ing Individual Satyagrahaand released after oneyear. On August 8, 1942,Gandhiji gave the call forQuit India Movement.Lal Bahadur actively par-ticipated in the move-ment. He went under-ground but was laterarrested. Lal BahadurShastri was released in1945 along with other

major leaders. He earned thepraise of Pandit Govind

Vallabh Pant by his hard workduring the 1946 provincialelections. Lal Bahadur'sadministrative ability andorganization skills came to thefore during this time. WhenGovind Vallabh Pant becamethe Chief Minister of UttarPradesh, he appointed LalBahadur Shastri as hisParliamentary Secretary. In1947, Lal Bahadur Shastribecame the Minister of Policeand Transport in Pant'sCabinet. Lal Bahadur Sastriwas the General Secretary ofthe Congress Party when thefirst general elections wereheld after India becameRepublic. Congress Partyreturned to power with a huge

majority. In 1952, Jawahar LalNehru appointed Lal BahadurShastri as the Railways andTransport Minister in theCentral Cabinet. Lal BahadurShastri's contribution in pro-viding more facilities to travel-ers in third class compartmentscannot be forgotten. Hereduced the vast disparitybetween the first class andthird class in the Railways. LalBahadur Shastri resigned fromRailways in 1956, owningmoral responsibility for a rail-

way accident. JawaharlalNehru tried to persuadeShastriji but Lal BahadurShastri refused to budge fromhis stand. By his action LalBahadur Shastri set new stan-dards of morality in public life.In the next general electionswhen Congress returned topower, Lal Bahadur Shastribecame the Minister forTransport andCommunications and later theMinister for Commerce andIndustry. He became the HomeMinister in 1961, after thedeath of Govind Vallabh Pant.In the 1962 India-China warShastriji played a key role inmaintaining internal securityof the country.

Nehru in 1964, Lal Bahadur Shastri

was unanimously elected as the

Prime Minister of India. It was a dif-

ficult time and the country was fac-

ing huge challenges. There was food

shortage in the country and on the

security front Pakistan was creating

problems. In 1965, Pakistan tried to

take advantage of India's vulnerabil-

ity and attacked India. Mild-man-

nered Lal Bahadur Shastri rose to

the occasion and led the country ably. To enthuse soldiers and farmers he coined the slogan

of "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan". Pakistan lost the war and Shastriji's leadership was praised all over

the world.

Birth Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904 at

Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. His parents were Sharada Prasadand Ramdulari Devi. Lal Bahadur's surname was Srivastavabut he dropped it as he did not want to indicate his caste. LalBahadur's father was a school teacher and later on he becamea clerk in the Revenue Office at Allahabad. Though SharadaPrasad was poor, he lived a life of honesty and integrity. Lal

Bahadur lost his father when he was only one. RamdulariDevi raised Lal Bahadur and her two daughters at her father's

house.

Death :In January 1966, to broker peace between India and

Pakistan, Russia mediated a meeting between Lal Bahadur

Shastri and

Ayub Khan in

Russia. India

and Pakistan

signed the

joint declara-

tion under

Russian medi-

ation. Under

the treaty

India agreed

to return to Pakistan all the territories occupied by it during

the war. The joint declaration was signed on January 10,

1966 and Lal Bahadur Shastri died of heart attack on the

same night.

Incidents There is a very famous

incident regarding Lal

Bahadur Shastri's childhood

which took place when he

was six years old. One day,

while returning from school,

Lal Bahadur and his friends

went to an orchard that was

on the way to home. Lal

Bahadur Shastri was standing

below while his friends

climbed the trees to pluck

mangoes. Meanwhile, the

gardener came and caught

hold of Lalbahadur Shastri.

He scolded Lal Bahadur

Shastri and started beating

him. Lal Bahadur Shastri

pleaded to gardener to leave

him as he was orphan. Taking

pity on Lal Bahadur, the gar-

dener said, "Because you are

an orphan, it is all the more

important that you must learn

better behavior." These words

left a deep imprint on Lal

Bahadur Shastri and he swore

to behave better in the future.

New Delhi: BJPPresident Nitin Gadkari onMonday dragged CongressGeneral Secretary DigvijayaSingh to thecourt by fil-ing a crimi-nal defama-tion caseagainst himat a Delhi'scourt. TheBJP presi-dent hit outat DigvijayaSingh whohad saidt h a tG a d a k r ialong withhis businessp a r t n e rAjay Sancheti had made aprofit of 490 crore from theChhattisgarh coal mines.Gadkari argued beforeMetropolitan MagistrateSudesh Kumar that Singh'scomments had maligned hisreputation.

In the complaint Gadkarialleged that Digvijaya Singhhad said that his businesspartner Ajay Sancheti madeprofit Rs 490 crore from coalmines in Chhattisgarh.According to Gadkari inanother paper Singh is quot-ed as saying that AjaySancheti made Rs 500 croredue to his proximity toGadkari. Gadkari argued

though his lawyer PinkyAnand claiming that he hadno business partnership withAjay Sancheti nor did he

receive any benefit due tohis association with him.

R.K. Meghen alias SanaYaima, the chairman of theUnited National LiberationFront (UNLF), sees theremark by NIA special courtthat the goal of his outfit'sstruggle is Manipur's inde-pendence, as a moral victory.

The NIA court, in itsorder to frame chargesagainst him and 17 otherssaid, "The accused personsdid the illegal acts to achievethe goal of independentManipur by illegal means."

The court passed theorder on September 6.

The trial is, however, yetto start.

"The NIA order has givenrecognition that ours is astruggle for Manipur's inde-pendence and therefore itshould be dealt with politi-cally. Moreover, we shouldbe treated as political prison-ers. We have won a big

moral victory," Sana Yaimatold The Telegraph heretoday.

Asked to comment on thedifference between his partyand others, which havejoined the peace process,Sana Yaima said theybelieved in the unitedstrength of the people ofManipur and the Northeast.

He referred to theNortheast as "western

Southeast Asian region" andsaid its future remained inunity and "unified struggle".

"We believe in a demo-cratic process. Plebiscite isthe most democratic meansto resolve Manipur's politi-cal issue. So our stand on theplebiscite has not changed,"he said.

He also said theConstitution had failed tokeep the country united.

"The feeling of region-alism is growing every-where and the decentrali-sation process is underway," he said. "The gov-ernment says militancyhas become an industry;we say organising surren-der programmes hasbecome a big industry," headded. On the issue ofmigrant influx in Manipur,the UNLF leader said thestate government was notdoing enough and that thepeople should launch acampaign.
