Poland’s national airline LOT pre-sented its 2020 profitable growth strategy recently aiming to achieve 10 million passengers annually, gradually increase its fleet and launch new flights.

LOT’s strategy is based on five pil-lars: taking advan-tage of potential that lies in a grow-ing market, devel-oping a network of connections and a hub, competition, boosting effectiveness and building a com-mitted team.

airport will be initially operated four and later five times a week, starting from the beginning of the 2017 summer season.

To improve its product portfolio and develop its network of connections LOT will need a strong and efficient fleet. The company es-timates that in 2020 it will operate a total of approximately 70 aircraft, including 16 Dream-liners and approximately 15 new single-aisle planes with 150-plus seating capacity.

“LOT is able to develop its fleet on its own thanks to operating leases in that way signifi-cantly reducing a burden on the company’s finances and improving availability and deliv-ery time for the planes. In 2017 the first few single-aisle aircrafts are going to be added to

our fleet. We are in the final phase of negotia-tions. We also expect the delivery of two new 787 Dreamliners. We are going to simplify and standardise our target fleet,” Milczarski con-tinues.

One of the key factors allowing LOT to achieve sustainable viability involves steadily increas-ing the company’s effectiveness in all areas of its operations, according to the airline. Today LOT is one of the most effective airlines in Eu-rope in terms of costs. However, its cost effec-tiveness ratio is planned to improve to reach 5.5 USc/ASK vis-a-vis the present level of 6.51 USc/ASK. LOT hopes to ensure the highest pos-sible operational reliability. Its goal is to main-tain service regularity at 99% and punctuality at 87%.

Airbus Helicopters and Precise Flight en-ter into supply agreement for Pulselite Bird Strike Prevention System

Airbus Helicopters and Precise Flight have en-tered into a supply agreement for the Pulselite bird Strike Prevention System which will be offered as an option on all Airbus Helicop-ters models marketed in the United States. The Pulselite System is an FAA-certified light-weight electrical system controller that alter-nately pulses the landing and auxiliary lights of a helicopter, thereby increasing its visibil-ity and reflecting the speed and directional movement of the aircraft. The Pulselite Sys-tem has been shown to reduce bird strikes up to 66%, according to Precise Flight. The recent exponential growth in global bird populations, combined with the increase in global air traf-fic, has caused bird strikes to become a pri-mary safety threat and financial burden to rotorcraft operators.

Small Planet Airlines counts increased revenues, but lower profits

During the first half of 2016 leisure carrier Small Planet Airlines grew its revenues by 9,9% to €72.3m (US$82.0m) when compared to the same period in 2015. The main reasons behind revenue growth were increased activity in Lithu-ania, Poland and the United Kingdom, launch of flights under the German AOC, and return to the French market. Over the period of six months, Small Planet Airlines added six new aircraft and carried 660,000 passengers - 26% more than during the same period last year. Currently, Small Planet Airlines operates twenty-one aircraft un-der their AOCs: seventeen Airbus A320 aircraft in 180-economy seat configuration and four Airbus A321 aircraft in 220-economy seat con-figuration. Cabin interiors of all Small Planet Air-lines’ aircraft were retrofitted this year, including new Recaro seats, LED lightning, premium seat-ing, on-board entertainment service Air-Fi, and more. Rapid growth and record investments in fleet expansion and the aircraft upgrade pro-gram contributed to Small Planet Airlines profit-ability decrease – its gross profit margin lowered from 9.8% to 1.0% when compared to Q1 2015.

TransDigm to acquire Young & Franklin and Tactair Fluid Controls

TransDigm Group has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Young & Franklin and its subsidiaries, including Tactair Fluid Controls. The company manufactures proprietary, highly engineered valves and actuators. Revenues are anticipated to be about US$75m for the fiscal year ending December 2016 with aftermarket comprising approximately 70% of the revenue. Nearly 100% of the revenues are from propri-etary products and about 70% of the revenue is aerospace related. The balance is sold to the industrial gas turbine market. The company is located in Liverpool, New York. Major platforms include Embraer’s E2, Phenom 300 and Legacy 450/500 programs; bombardier’s Challenger and Global programs; Mitsubishi MRJ; Lockheed C130J; bell UH1; and various GE, Solar and other industrial turbine applications.

FAI breaks ground on new Hangar 8

FAI Asset Management GmbH, a member of the Germany-headquartered FAI Aviation Group, has begun construction of a third hangar at Albrecht Dürer Airport in Nuremberg. Ground was broken for the latest FAI building – to be known as Hangar 8 – on August 15, following comple-tion of road network infrastructure changes by the airport company. The €6m (US$6.7m) pro-ject will result in a building with a 4,800m² footprint, of which 4,500m² will comprise hangar space, while 300 m² will be dedicated to office areas. Designed in house by FAI CEO Siegfried Axtmann, the additional building will mirror the existing FAI properties in style, and like the rest of the facility will also be carbon neutral. On completion, which is expected in March 2017, the complete FAI facility will total some 14,000m². The additional space will be utilized for line maintenance work across a range of aircraft, including FAI’s fleet of exclusively bombardier aircraft. FAI Technik, the in-house maintenance division of FAI Group is specialized in base and line maintenance of bombardier aircraft. It has completed several heavy maintenance 8C and 12C checks on the bombardier Global Express model, which includes cabin refurbishments and modifications. The team has also worked through a number of 96/192 month-inspections on Challenger 604s, as well as 12 year/12,000 hours-inspections across the Learjet-family. To sup-port the maintenance expansion, FAI Technik plans to further bolster its 60-strong team with the recruitment of ten more engineers to fulfill the extra requirements.
