In the first round, the media wo n an appellate court decision modifying th e order, pending furlher hearings. Th e Stale Court of Appeal said the media could publish or broadcast information. which [hey obtained from sources olher lhan police, olher city officials and attorneys in the case. Municipal Judge Agnes O'Brien Smilh had originally issued an order gagging the officials, and extended th e order Thursday to the media. Professional journalism groups imm ediately expressed outrage, news organizations called their lawyers, an d the- American Civil Liberties Union . announced thai il would appeal the order. Only 24 hours later, the San Francisco Chronicle and il s broadcasting company filed "a petition for extraordinary wrils of prohibition," and late Friday obtained the temporary modifi- cation. Hughes Dies At 72 Charles Hughes, 72, a long time resident of Deslin, died Friday night in Fort Walton Beach. Visitalion will be from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday at McLaughlin Mortuary, Fort Walton Beach. Th e body will be senl to Jacksonville for cremation. McLaughlin mor- tuary is in charge of th e arrangements. Mr . Hughes first saw Destin in 1935. He was in Ihe area for a monlh and before he left, he had bought his land on Cobb Point. Although still living in Chicago, 111., he began im - proving his land aboul Iw o years afler Us purchase. He built a log cabin on his land an d from the time of its' completion in 1939 until he and hi s wife, Fern, moved lo Destin per- manently in 1952, they spent (heir week-ends in Ih e north and iheir summers on sunny Cobb Point. Friends who knew Mr. Hughes said that he has been in Ih e midst of Deslin affairs since he first moved lo the tiny Florida fishing village. "H e wa s the ringleader of all our comm unily affairs," said long-time friend," Mrs, Ross Marlcr. "He was the first with donalions for any community project and yo u could always count on Charlie to be th e first person willing to back you for anything," she said. Mr .
