Police Appreciation Day 2020 South Hills Country Club has been honored to host local police officers during our annual Police Appreciation Day for the past eleven years. On this day, roughly 150 well-deserving officers enjoy a day of golf and dining at our premier country club. Because of the generous donations of the members of the club and the surrounding communities, the officers enjoy the entire day free of charge. The officers are always most appreciative and given today’s political climate we feel this day is more important than ever. On Monday, September 21, 2020, South Hills Country Club hopes to celebrate the 12th Anniversary by again hosting officers from around the community to honor the many men and women who pledge to serve and protect. With the Covid-19 crisis, we will have a contingency plan in case of restrictions. As always, this event will have a “Thank You Blue” theme to show the officers our continuing support. In addition, we will be honoring Officer Dale Provins of the Jefferson Hills PD who was killed in a car accident while on duty this summer. The Police Appreciation Day 2020 committee is reaching out to the SHCC members and the surrounding community to ask for your continuing financial support to make this Appreciation Day even more special and as memorable as it has been in previous years. We know that many businesses are experiencing hardships due to the economy being shut down, but hope that these same businesses understand the importance of supporting our local law enforcement at this difficult time. Click here to view the sponsorship form for your consideration. Please complete and return to South Hills Country Club. Thank you in advance for your generous support.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Fellow members: Welcome to The Twilight Zone. That is to say ...the summer months of 2020. This year we have seen it all.
A global pandemic Reservations at the pool in 3 hour increments No Pool Bar!! The Audacity!! Elbow greetings... Fights over masks... Karens getting a bad name. "sorry mom and Mrs Ubinger"! Politicians identifying as kings Capacity limitations for indoor dining that change daily Bars now being labeled as domestic terrorist threats No smoking signs on the Adirondack chairs.. The Humanity!! and lastly.. a hotline to turn in your neighbors for code violations. With all that being said, Our little slice of heaven at SHCC is thriving. We have had over 90 new and upgraded members this year! Our Golf course has been in Tournament shape all year!. One of our own took home the trophy at this year's premier TriState Golf event The Pittsburgh Open (Congratulations to Darren Kowalski for his spectacular play) Three players were able to break par in this talented field. Two from our best amateurs (Nice showing Jimmy Ellis)! Kudos to Bryan Flaherty for his and his team's dedication to excellence. Lastly, special Thanks to Tony Traci. Tony exemplifies what it means to be a superior Head Professional and we're proud to have him here. And in that vein.. I believe we have the best department Heads in the industry. Chef John M, Kerie Z., Barb and Heather and our GM Frank Hamschin have been invaluable to help us navigate this anomaly of a year!

A few other tidbits... We are continuing to have the problem of some sloppy and embarrassing treatment of our staff by a few of our members. These individual members will be disciplined quickly and in accordance to the nature of the violation. We expect all our members to practice empathy....pandemic or not. Remember what Dave Barry said "A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person" Simple manners are important. We are also having trouble with a few members and guests that have a problem understanding our dress code standards. Please tuck in your shirts (guys) Please wear your hats forward not backwards. Muscle tees / string bikinis and cargo shorts might be great for you to photoshop on Social Media, but we expect better at South Hills Country Club. The standard is the standard. It's up to our seasoned members to help us and our staff to gently remind those of our high expectations. Sincerely, Judge Smails...er ...Chris Christopher S. One of the many projects that was included in the Club’s Phase 2 Capital Plan was installation of security cameras throughout the clubhouse and around the exterior of SHCC property. We received a quick return on
this investment as the cameras enabled us to identify cars that were struck by other vehicles, golfers who hit cars with errant shots, and a few incidents of inappropriate Member behavior. The security system includes 57 cameras, cell phone access, and three months of data back-up. While it is impossible to cover all 130 acres of the golf course, the cameras are positioned in locations that will help create the safest environment possible. The cameras that are focused on the practice range and hole 32 are being evaluated to determine if additional equipment is needed or if the existing cameras should be enhanced to provide more clear images. We continue to have problems with golfers hitting balls on Brownsville Road and across Route 51. This creates a risk to drivers, our Club neighbors and fellow golfers. It is important to remember that the golfer is ultimately responsible for the flight of his/her ball and any damage or injury caused by the flight of the ball. The Board of Governors and Golf staff have also been working to correct an ongoing problem with long hitters on the Practice Range who are hitting balls dangerously close to golfers on hole #4. There have been too many close calls that could have resulted in serious injury. As is the case with everything at South Hills Country Club, please be aware and respectful of your fellow Members and guests. This is a great Club and it should be a safe-haven and home away from home for all Members! Sincerely, Frank S. Hamschin General Manager

If you are considering upgrading to Transferable Family Membership, please
take a moment and read this testimonial from our Tenured Member
I wanted to take a moment to convey how much we are enjoying our upgrade to the
Family Transferable membership. Golfing together is really important to us and in
years past we found the times we could actually get out together to be a little
restrictive. We like to go out earlier in the day, so during the week we were limited to
Thursday and Friday. On weekends and holidays we could only get out late morning
at the earliest. All of that was Pittsburgh weather dependent. Now we are getting
out early every weekend, and usually at least once during the week with each other
or with friends. It’s still weather dependent, but we’ve easily doubled the number of
rounds we play.
Sincerely, Jim Devaty

FROM THE LADIES’ TEE
I am hoping everyone is having a great summer! Hot and humid are two words to describe this season. I have enjoyed playing with many of you on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and both weekend days. Our WGA membership is currently at 69 golfers, and we are certainly enjoying our Club and its beautiful golf course to the fullest possible extent in this very different time of masks and social distancing. Please contact me at [email protected] or via Clubster if you are interested in playing with us! WGA is always looking for new members! Our WGA visited Nemacolin Country Club on July 14 for a fun AWAY DAY of golf. Special thanks to Serena Gozion & MJ Simon for setting up our tee times and game. We have been invited to participate in Nemacolin’s Invitational on August 27. Please visit the counter in the locker room for details. Continue to announce your rounds as qualification for “Ten Ladies Out”. Net scores from now to September 7th may be used. Event date is September 17, 2020. EVERY WGA MEMBER CAN PARTICIPATE! Simply fill out an entry sheet in the binder in the locker room. Rules sheet and details are available there. The 2020 Pittsburgh Open was played at South Hills Country Club on
July 13 & 14. Our very own Darin Kowalski was the Champion!!! Darin
shot 68-68 to win by 2 shots over teaching Professional, Kevin Shields
of The Club at Nevillewood. Jimmy Ellis, also a member of SHCC,
finished third with rounds of 72-70.
We are very proud of Darin and Jimmy for representing our club so well!
We were also very proud to host the event, as it is one of the Tri State
PGA ‘Major’ events. We had 112 of the top amateurs and professionals
from Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia in the field. The club
showed very well as we received many compliments on the course
changes, the condition of the golf course, and the support of our
membership that formed the gallery around 18 green during the event!
A special thank you to Bryan Flaherty and his staff for all their hard
work to have the golf course in such condition for not only this event,
but throughout this challenging year!

This year, our Head PGA Golf Professional, Tony Traci, shot 72-68 in the
Tri State PGA Section Championship at Indiana Country Club in 2019 and
finished 3rd to qualify for the 2020 PGA Professional Championship, July
19-22 at the Fazio Foothills and Coore Crenshaw Cliffside courses at Omni Barton Creek
Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas. The event was, unfortunately, canceled due to the
Corona Virus pandemic.
SHCC IN THE NEWS
August 2020 Page 16
Mother nature was not very kind to the Grounds department in July. Our on-course weather station recorded 22 days this past month with daytime temperatures in the 90’s and nighttime lows averaging in the mid-70’s. Coupled with the increased amount of rounds it is reasonable to say we have our fair share of bumps and bruises out on the course. Lack of rainfall and increased irrigation usage has been our biggest battle this past month. We recorded 2.82” of rainfall down from 5.98” the previous year. The extra stress put on our already aging irrigation system has resulted in 82 repairs this season. While most of the leaks/breaks have been minor, we have had mainline breaks that required isolating areas of the golf course during times they would need water. Our irrigation crew has done an outstanding job making repairs in a timely fashion minimizing down time during extreme stress. With increased disease pressure we have tightened the intervals of our preventive fungicide and fertility applications to our greens and approaches. We have been successful preventing disease while increasing plant root mass and maintaining foliar growth. While the increase in plant growth can result in slightly slower than normal green speeds, it is important to make sure the plants are as healthy as possible to survive the stresses the summer weather brings. To help the Grounds department maintain the best possible conditions to our playing surfaces I would like to reiterate some of our golf cart rules. • Please keep all carts 30 yards away from all greens, approaches and
tees unless on a designated cart path.
• Do not drive through any area marked off with green/white traffic stakes.
• Always stay on designated cart paths on par-3 holes. Holes 4 and 12 are cart path only.
• Please do not ride standing on the backs of the golf carts to the next tee or following tee shots. This is an unsafe practice and can cause harm to you and the golf cart.
• Avoid sharp turns, sudden stops, and quick acceleration on fairways.
• When finishing a hole, move to the next tee before marking your scorecard to help keep the flow of play behind you moving.
• Do not drive through casual water on any part of the golf course.
GROUNDS DEPARTMENT UPDATE
August 2020 Page 17
I would like to thank everyone for the continued support this golf season. The Grounds department is anxiously waiting for the for the high temperatures and humidity to drop. Everyone knows that fall golf in Western Pennsylvania yields the best golfing conditions and we look forward to providing an optimal experience to our membership and guests.
Best Regards, Bryan Flaherty, Golf Course Superintendent
