1. In a 16th century social satire, Z-charite, the poet speaks of a dispute between the sophisticated Y and the coarse X. They approach Rama, asking him to arbitrate, and he keeps them both under observation for 6 months after which Y is found to be lousy and diseased, while X is unaffected and none the worse for wear. Rama, pleased by the stability of X, christens X with his own name . The poem further offers a fanciful derivation for the common name of X, from another name of Rama.

Identify the treatise and the characters X and Y.

6. X is a vitamin-rich sweet made from jaggery and dry fruits, took shape in Y town at least a hundred years ago. High quality X from Y is also exported to several parts of Europe, America, and the Gulf nations. About 100 years ago, noted sweet merchants from Y — members of the Kalburgi and Hagargi families — introduced this sweet, which only a few could afford to buy in the market. Traditionally, X is prepared mostly as a post-partum tonic. Over the years, these families have innovated and added more ingredients to make X popular.

The current version includes ingredients like the kernel of the Semecarpus nut [marking nut/ dhobi’s nut] and dried coconut.

C1 narrated this folk story to C2, an editor with Oxford University Press and C3, a university professor when he visited India.

The story uses a creature as a metaphor to exemplify the various complications of identity and relationships. C1 then cautioned C2 and C3 not to do anything with the story as C1 was working on it for an anthology.

Later the Wodeyars were major votaries of this shrine. The icon of Krishna is made in the Chola style, with signs of Hoysala influences like the portrayal of the ten avatara-s in the arch-shaped panel encircling the deity. The temple is often engulfed either by a dense fog, or by clouds.

• The shrine of B is unique in that it has an icon of Ranganatha in a standing posture. The icon is made in the Chola style. The deity, adorned with a hunting knife, is very popular with the locals who believe that ‘Rangayya’ sets out in the nights and guards their territory. The people also make an annual offering of a pair of giant leather sandals to facilitate Rangayya’s nightly perambulations. There is a belief that the sandals get worn out every year.

Since December 2010, these shrines have more in common. What?
