Page 2: Poland Assesment

Pupils are assessed separately in each subject. All marks are written in the

paper register and in the electronical register.

In years 1-3 of the primary school the assessment is descriptive.

Starting with grade 4, the teacher has the following scale of marks at

his/her disposal:

The grades given for individual assignments, exams etc. during the school year were based on the same scale, but allowed also intermediate grades, made by adding a plus, a minus or, in case of some teachers, a double minus, to

the base grade. These "fractional" grades had no official recognition in the system of final grades, but the common practice was to base the final grade on the average of all

the grades accumulated over the year.

11 is the failing grade, 22 to 5 5 are normal passing grades, and 6 means that the student exceeded the expectations.

Adding minuses to a 66 is extremely uncommon. The performance that is better than 55 but does not deserve a

6 is usually graded 5+.5+.

If they receive “unsatisfactory” mark in one subject, they can take a repeating exam in this subject. A pupil who has failed the repeat is not promoted and remains in the same grade.

A pupil is promoted to a higher grade if he has received “acceptable” (2) marks or above for all compulsory subjects. At the end of the school year students receive a certificate .

On the completion for the 3-year general upper secondary school (liceum ogólnokształcące)

students are awarded a school leaving certificate (świadectwo ukończenia liceum

ogólnokształcącego), on the basis of school results, without a final examination. It mentions the

subjects and the marks obtained at the end of the final year. It gives access to the Matura

examination or to post-secondary education. At the end of upper secondary education, pupils

may sit for egzamin dojrzałości (Matura), new external national examination, which is

compulsory only to receive the Matura certificate and to gain access to higher education.
